Knowledge Representation in Travelling Texts:from Mirroring to Missing the Point

2014

Today, information travels fast. Texts travel, too. In a corporate context, the question is how to manage which knowledge elements should travel to a new language area or market and in which form? The decision to let knowledge elements travel or not travel highly depends on the limitation and the purpose of the text in a new context as well as on predefined parameters for text travel. For texts used in marketing and in technology, the question is whether culture-bound knowledge elements should be domesticated or kept as foreign elements, or should be mirrored or moulded—or should not travel at all! When should semantic and pragmatic elements in a text be replaced and by w…

What can synaesthesia tell us about our minds?

2014

Synaesthesia is considered here as a cognitive phenomenon in the context of developmental, neuropathological and linguistic perspectives. Developmental synaesthesia seems to arise as an effect of interplay between genotype and phenotype, during the implicit learning process in childhood, in those individuals who possess an inborn susceptibility to it. Some connections between synaesthesia and extraordinary experiences, brain restructuration and pain, are examined. Acquired types of synaesthesia may be related to sensory deprivation. The somatosensory cortex may be significant for cognitive synaesthesia, with especial importance placed on a mirror system. It is suggested here that synaesthes…

Suppression of mirror generalization for reversible letters: Evidence from masked priming

2011

Abstract Readers of the Roman script must “unlearn” some forms of mirror generalization when processing printed stimuli (i.e., herb and herd are different words). Here we examine whether the suppression of mirror generalization is a process that affects all letters or whether it mostly affects reversible letters (i.e., b / d ). Three masked priming lexical decision experiments were conducted to examine how the cognitive system processes mirror images of reversible vs. non-reversible letters embedded in Spanish words. Repetition priming effects relative to the mirror-letter condition were substantially greater when the critical letter was reversible (e.g., idea - IDEA vs. ibea - IDEA ) than …

Joan Roís de Corella, La Istòria de Leànder y Hero: edizione critica con studio introduttivo

2018

This contribution is a further partial anticipation of the critical edition of the mythological faules of Joan Roís de Corella (15th century) for Barcino (ENC), after that appeared in Magnificat, vol.3, 2016. It focuses on one of the author's most mature and significant faules, as well as one of the most prestigious testimonies both of the presence of the myth of Ero and Leandro in the Iberian 15th century, and of the peninsular reception of the Heroides. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, Introduction, the current situation of the studies related to the Istòria is first summarized. Next, the analysis of the literary memory that supports the discursive construction of the f…

Naturalistic music and dance: Cortical phase synchrony in musicians and dancers

2018

Expertise in music has been investigated for decades and the results have been applied not only in composition, performance and music education, but also in understanding brain plasticity in a larger context. Several studies have revealed a strong connection between auditory and motor processes and listening to and performing music, and music imagination. Recently, as a logical next step in music and movement, the cognitive and affective neuro-sciences have been directed towards expertise in dance. To understand the versatile and overlapping processes during artistic stimuli, such as music and dance, it is necessary to study them with continuous naturalistic stimuli. Thus, we used long exce…

Titchener's T in context 2 - Symmetric patterns of two Ts.

2019

Abstract Patterns of two Ts, materializing different symmetry groups, were used to explore conditions that would lead to a modulation of the typically observed overestimation of the length of a T's undivided line relative to its divided line. Observers either had to compare the lengths of the lines of one or the other of the Ts in a pattern, or noncorresponding lines between the two Ts. For both tasks alike, the T-illusion was found to be markedly greater with twofold mirror-symmetric 2-T patterns than it usually is with individual Ts. A control experiment suggested that the effect was probably due to the collinearity of the two Ts' undivided lines in these patterns rather than the addition…

''Motor Resonance Mechanisms Are Preserved In Alzheimer's Disease Patients''

2012

Bisio, A. | Casteran, M. | Ballay, Y. | Manckoundia, P. | Mourey, F. | Pozzo, T.; International audience; ''This study aimed to better characterize the sensorimotor mechanisms underlying motor resonance, namely the relationship between motion perception and movement production in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD). This work first gives a kinematic description of AD patients' upper limb movements, then it presents a simple paradigm in which a dot with different velocities is moved in front of the participant who is instructed to point to its final position when it stopped. AD patients' actions, as well as healthy elderly participants, were similarly influenced by the dot veloc…

How radical prostatectomy procedures have changed over the last 10 years in Italy: a comparative analysis based on more than 1500 patients participat…

2020

Purpose Therapeutic strategies for prostate cancer (PCa) have been evolving dramatically worldwide. The current article reports on the evolution of surgical management strategies for PCa in Italy. Methods The data from two independent Italian multicenter projects, the MIRROR-SIU/LUNA (started in 2007, holding data of 890 patients) and the Pros-IT-CNR project (started in 2014, with data of 692 patients), were compared. Differences in patients' characteristics were evaluated. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify characteristics associated with robot-assisted (RA) procedure, nerve sparing (NS) approach, and lymph node dissection (LND). Results The two cohorts did not …
