International Mobility of PhD Graduates and the Construction of Scientific Careers: The French Example

2014

Expatriation of higher-education graduates raises much concern in many countries often in conjunction with talk about the brain drain. It supposedly entails a risk of losing the skills required for a competitive economy. The issue is all the more acute for PhD graduates, who are expected to play a major part in the knowledge economy (Dasgupta and David, 1994). However, questions arise as to the causes of such mobility and its consequences for young graduates' individual career paths. The academic literature on graduate migration discusses these questions in terms of theory focusing on the push and pull factors liable to explain the motivations behind individual PhD graduate mobility (Dongbi…

Educated for migration? Blind spots around labor market conditions, competence building, and international mobility

2018

Young European graduates are crossing borders to work abroad more often than in the past. This trend is particularly evident in Southern Europe, where recent economic downturn has significantly diminished professional opportunities and career prospects. This study will investigate Spain, a country where unemployment has increased dramatically since 2008, as a case study to examine recent graduate’s experiences to develop a professional career in Germany. In particular, this study will draw upon various sources: official statistics; review literature; and education and training policies throughout the European Union. The investigation features an interview with Spanish graduates working in …

Changing Academic Mobility Patterns and International Migration

2008

Several scholars have underlined connections between academic mobility and international migration. This qualitative study explores a spectrum of academic mobility articulated by Teichler that empirically contributes to consideration of these connections. This analysis of e-mail excerpts from 20 migrant academics, living in seven countries, illuminates six distinct patterns of academic mobility and highlights key differences between regions of the world. Narrowly conceiving academic mobility in terms of traditional short-term internationalization finds many universities focused on and staffed for academic mobility between countries. Other regions have long been focused on academic mobility …

Hospitalizations of patients in Burgundy and in nine other french regions, spatial analysis of interregional flows from french hospital claims data

2015

Introduction / presentation of the context : The creation of ARS (Regional Healthcare Agencies) was accompanied by the regionalized organization of healthcare. Even though the administrative procedures for dividing the country into areas for healthcare coverage are well known, we propose a geographic analysis of the reasons why patients attend one hospital rather than another, which seem to escape the logic used by the authorities. Methods employed and sources of data : Using the PMSI-MCO, we studied the flow of patients living in one region to hospitals in other regions according to ten reasons for visiting hospitals. The analysis was completed by a cartographic analysis, which related the …

NEW INSIGHTS ON SUPRAMOLECULAR AGGREGATES OF SODIUM DOCUSATE (AOTNa) BY ION MOBILITY MASS SPECTROMETRY

2013

Backgorund: The ability of some surfactants to form charged aggregates in gas phase has been proven experimentally by electrospray ionization (ESI) spectrometry [1- 5]. However, in the early investigations, interesting questions concerning the structural organization of these aggregates in gas phase and if they reflect their typical self-assembling in the starting liquid solutions were not addressed. Subsequently, independently of their aggregation motive in liquid phase and of the charge state in the gas phase, some hints suggesting that surfactant molecules are organized in gas phase as reverse micelle-like aggregates have been reported Objective: The supramolecular charged aggregates for…

Dispersive magnetic immunoaffinity extraction. Anatoxin-a determination.

2017

Specific monoclonal antibodies were coupled with magnetic Sepharose-based beads and used, for the first time. The methodology was applied to preconcentrate anatoxin-a from water and the later determination by ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). Dispersive magnetic immunoaffinity (d-MagIA) extraction methodology provided a limit of detection of 0.02μgL-1 and a satisfactory precision with a relative standard deviation lower than 15%. Recoveries were evaluated at 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0μgL-1 anatoxin-a with quantitative values from 91 to 115%. Additionally, isobaric interferences with phenylalanine were completely avoided by the use of the developed d-MagIA extraction coupled to IMS determinations.

Collision induced fragmentations of multiply charged sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)-sulfosuccinate aggregates in gas phase: neutral loss versus charge sepa…

2016

Abstract Stability and fragmentation patterns of multicharged aggregates of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)-sulfosuccinate (NaAOT) in gas phase have been investigated by ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS). Positively doubly charged NaAOT aggregates show at low collision energy a preference for the loss of NaAOT molecules, whereas fragmentation through charge separation process is favored at higher collision energy. By increasing the charge state of the aggregates, the fragmentation through charge separation tends to predominate especially at low aggregation number and only charge separation fragmentation is observed for positively quadruply charged species.…

Mass spectrometry applications

2012

The history of proteomics dates back to the discovery of two-dimensional gels in the 1970s, which provided the first feasible way of displaying hundreds or thousands of proteins on a single gel. Despite mass spectrometry being restricted for a long time to small and thermostable compounds, the development in the late 1980s of two techniques for the routine and general formation of molecular ions of intact biomolecules changed this situation and mass spectrometry has become an indispensable tool for proteomics research. The aim of this chapter is to review the major types of MS instruments used in proteomics analysis and to discuss strategies for the analysis of whole proteins and peptides o…
