Developmental processes are controlled by regulatory genes encoding for transcription factors and signaling molecules. Functional relationships between these genes are described by gene regulatory networks (GRN), models which allow integration of various levels of information. The sea urchin embryo is an experimental model system which offers many advantages for the analysis of GRN. Echinoderms represent a very fascinating phylum belonging to deuterostome superphylum, including also hemichordates, tunicates and vertebrates. Among echinoderms, sea urchin species are studied worldwide as excellent model organisms for the study of developmental biology, and are suitable as bioindicators. During a study on the defense strategies activated by Paracentrotus lividus sea urchin embryos in response to CdCl2, we isolated five metallothionein (MT) cDNAs. Molecular Characterization of Fusarium oxysporum f. melongenae by ISSR and RAPD Markers on Eggplant

Fusarium oxysporum f. melongenae is a major soil-borne pathogen of eggplant (Solanum melongena). ISSR and RAPD markers were used to characterize Fusarium oxysporum f. melongenae isolates collected from eggplant fields in southern Turkey. Those isolates were not pathogenic to tomato. Pathogens were identified by their morphology, and their identity was confirmed by PCR amplifi- cation using the specific primer PF02-3. A ceRNA approach may unveil unexpected contributors to deletion syndromes, the model of 5q- syndrome.

In genomic deletions, gene haploinsufficiency might directly configure a specific disease phenotype. Nevertheless, in some cases no functional association can be identified between haploinsufficient genes and the deletion-associated phenotype. Transcripts can act as microRNA sponges. The reduction of transcripts from the hemizygous region may increase the availability of specific microRNAs, which in turn may exert in-trans regulation of target genes outside the deleted region, eventually contributing to the phenotype. Transcriptional regulators are thought to play a key role in cell fate determination and territorial specification in sea urchin. Our goals are to clone transcription factors for studying embryonic development. One approach has been to use promoter binding and gene transfer technology to investigate the mechanisms of transcriptional activation and repression of the early H2A histone gene. Sperm DNA integrity and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections: a controversy that could be resolved by a new molecular approach

Study question: The aim was to determine if HPVs affect spermatozoa DNA integrity. To resolve the discrepancy regarding the association between HPV infections and sperm DNA damage. HSP90 in ageing progression and ageing related diseases

HSP90 activities decline during ageing. Noteworthy, HSP90 mediated retrotransposon silencing seems to have a key role in the maintenance of genome integrity. Furthermore, inhibition of HSP90 activities lead to cell senescence and apoptosis. Original bioinformatics analyses and literature data will be discussed in the light of the potential involvement of HSP90 in ageing progression and ageing related diseases.
