Whole-Body Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Current Role in Patients with Lymphoma.

2021

Imaging of lymphoma is based on the use of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG-PET/CT) and/or contrast-enhanced CT, but concerns have been raised regarding radiation exposure related to imaging scans in patients with cancer, and its association with increased risk of secondary tumors in patients with lymphoma has been established. To date, lymphoproliferative disorders are among the most common indications to perform whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Whole-body MRI is superior to contrast-enhanced CT for staging the disease, also being less dependent on histology if compared to 18F-FDG-PET/CT. As well, it does not require exposure to i…

Fabrication and characterization of microscale HfO2-based Memristors

2017

Memristors are metal/insulator/metal devices whose resistance can be switched between two different states (i.e. the low resistive state LRS, and the high resistive state, HRS) by applying a proper voltage value over the two metal contacts [1], [2]. Their simple structure makes memristors prone to extreme down scaling and 3-D stacking potentiality, and excellent compatibility with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Moreover, because of their low power consumption and high speed, memristors are rightly considered the elemental bricks for a next generation of high-density nonvolatile memories. HfO2 has attracted much attention as an oxide material for memristor app…

Resistive state relaxation time in ZrO2(Y)-based memristive devices under the influence of external noise

2022

The effects of external digitally synthesized Gaussian noise on the resistive state relaxation time of a ZrO2(Y)-based memristive device when switching from a low resistance state to a high resistance state have been experimentally investigated. A nonmonotonic dependence of the resistive state relaxation time on the external noise intensity is found. This behavior is interpreted as a manifestation of the noise-enhanced stability effect previously observed in various complex systems with metastable states. It is shown that the experimental results agree satisfactorily with the theoretical ones. The presented results indicate the constructive role of external noise and its possible use as a m…

A human post-mortem brain model for the standardization of multi-centre MRI studies

2015

Multi-centre MRI studies of the brain are essential for enrolling large and diverse patient cohorts, as required for the investigation of heterogeneous neurological and psychiatric diseases. However, the multi-site comparison of standard MRI data sets that are weighted with respect to tissue parameters such as the relaxation times (T1, T2) and proton density (PD) may be problematic, as signal intensities and image contrasts depend on site-specific details such as the sequences used, imaging parameters, and sensitivity profiles of the radiofrequency (RF) coils. Water or gel phantoms are frequently used for long-term and/or inter-site quality assessment. However, these phantoms hardly mimic t…

Rapid hyperpolarization and purification of the metabolite fumarate in aqueous solution

2020

Significance Magnetic resonance imaging is hindered by inherently low sensitivity, which limits the method for the most part to observing water molecules in the body. Hyperpolarized molecules exhibit strongly enhanced MRI signals which opens the door for imaging low-concentration species in vivo. Biomolecules can be hyperpolarized and injected into a patient allowing for metabolism to be tracked in real time, greatly expanding the information available to the radiologist. Parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) is a hyperpolarization method renowned for its low cost and accessibility, but is generally limited by low polarization levels, modest molecular concentrations, and contamination by…

Orbital varices: a tricky diagnosis in MRI

1995

Orbital varix (OV) is a rare condition causing intermittent positional exophthalmos. Because of low venous pressure, OVs tend to collapse, being frequently undetectable in routine CT or MRI examinations. We describe one case of giant intraorbital varix studied with CT and MRI techniques.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) in Psychiatry

2001

In recent years, structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging has opened up new avenues to the study of psychiatric disorders. A number of structural changes characteristic for different psychiatric diseases could be delineated by the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) enables the in vivo investigation of cerebral neuronal activation under cognitive or behavioral activation paradigms. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) allows for the study of defined neurochemical substances or pharmacological agents in the human brain. This article presents an overview of the basic principles of the different MRI techniques and representative re…

Quantitative study of cardiac wall motion from cine-MRI using frequency-based optical flow methods

2010

The aim of this thesis is to study parietal desynchronisation of the left ventricle from conventional cine-MRI. The first part of our work consisted in the quantification of the left ventricle wall motion of the heart directly from conventional retrospective SSFP type cine-MRI sequences used in the study of cardiac function. The developed methods for measuring displacements within the images are frequency-based optical flow methods. These techniques seem to be particularly adapted to MRI specificities. We have demonstrated their robustness in the event of Rician noise and pixel intensity variations as a function of time. These variations are often associated with the through-plane motion of…
