Researches on the Hydraulic Systems of Actioning the Suspension Mechanisms at Tractors

2010

SUMMARY The agricultural machines are coupled to tractor th rough the suspension mechanism in three points. The actioning of the suspension mechanisms is made by some hydraulic systems, which have the following component parts: tank, pu mp, distributer, valves, hydraulic cylinders, filters and hydraulic prizes. These systems must assure, between others, lifting in a convenient time of the carried machine from the work position to that of transport position, to allow the maintaining of the machine in any intermediary position, between the l owest limited position and the upper limited position and to assure the posibility to th e carried machine to follow the irregularities of the ground dur…

Search strategies for ensemble feature selection in medical diagnostics

2003

The goal of this paper is to propose, evaluate, and compare four search strategies for ensemble feature selection, and to consider their application to medical diagnostics, with a focus on the problem of the classification of acute abdominal pain. Ensembles of learnt models constitute one of the main current directions in machine learning and data mining. Ensembles allow us to get higher accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, which are often not achievable with single models. One technique, which proved to be effective for ensemble construction, is feature selection. Lately, several strategies for ensemble feature selection were proposed, including random subspacing, hill-climbing-based se…

Machine Learning to Predict In-Hospital Mortality in COVID-19 Patients Using Computed Tomography-Derived Pulmonary and Vascular Features

2021

Pulmonary parenchymal and vascular damage are frequently reported in COVID-19 patients and can be assessed with unenhanced chest computed tomography (CT), widely used as a triaging exam. Integrating clinical data, chest CT features, and CT-derived vascular metrics, we aimed to build a predictive model of in-hospital mortality using univariate analysis (Mann–Whitney U test) and machine learning models (support vectors machines (SVM) and multilayer perceptrons (MLP)). Patients with RT-PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and unenhanced chest CT performed on emergency department admission were included after retrieving their outcome (discharge or death), with an 85/15% training/test dataset spli…

A Fuzzy-Clustering Based Approach for Measuring Similarity Between Melodies

2017

Symbolic melodic similarity aims to evaluate the degree of likeness of two or more sequences of notes. In this work, we propose the use of fuzzy c-means clustering as a tool for the measurement of the similarity between two melodies with a different number of notes. Moreover, we present an algorithm, FOCM, implemented in a computer program written in C\(\sharp \) able to read two melodies from files with MusicXML format and to perform the clustering to calculate the dissimilarity between any two melodies. In addition, for each iteration step in the convergence process of the algorithm, a family of intermediate states (transition melodies) are obtained that can be used as new thematic materi…

The Dreaming Variational Autoencoder for Reinforcement Learning Environments

2018

Reinforcement learning has shown great potential in generalizing over raw sensory data using only a single neural network for value optimization. There are several challenges in the current state-of-the-art reinforcement learning algorithms that prevent them from converging towards the global optima. It is likely that the solution to these problems lies in short- and long-term planning, exploration and memory management for reinforcement learning algorithms. Games are often used to benchmark reinforcement learning algorithms as they provide a flexible, reproducible, and easy to control environment. Regardless, few games feature a state-space where results in exploration, memory, and plannin…

Minimum information about a biofilm experiment (MIABiE): standards for reporting experiments and data on sessile microbial communities living at inte…

2014

The minimum information about a biofilm experiment (MIABiE) initiative has arisen from the need to find an adequate and scientifically sound way to control the quality of the documentation accompanying the public deposition of biofilm-related data, particularly those obtained using high-throughput devices and techniques. Thereby, the MIABiE consortium has initiated the identification and organization of a set of modules containing the minimum information that needs to be reported to guarantee the interpretability and independent verification of experimental results and their integration with knowledge coming from other fields. MIABiE does not intend to propose specific standards on how biof…

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Machine Predictions and Self-Fulfilling Prophecies

2021

We show that disclosing machine predictions to affected parties can trigger self-fulfilling prophecies. In an investment game, we experimentally vary investors’ and recipients’ access to a machine prediction about recipients’ likelihood to pay back an investment. Recipients who privately learn about an incorrect machine prediction alter their behavior in the direction of the prediction. Furthermore, when recipients learn that an investor has disregarded a machine prediction of no-repayment, this further lowers the repayment amount. We interpret these findings as evidence that transparency regarding machine predictions can alter recipients’ beliefs about what kind of person they are and what…

Reverberation reduction in capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) by front-face reflectivity minimization

2015

Abstract Front-face acoustic reflectivity of ultrasonic imaging transducers, due to acoustic impedance mismatch with the propagation medium, may cause reverberation phenomena during wideband pulse-echo operation. Front-face reflectivity may be reduced by promoting the transmission of the echoes, received from the medium, to the transducer backing, and by maximizing the mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion and dissipation by tuning the electrical load impedance connected to the transducer. In Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers (CMUTs), the energy transfer from the medium to the backing is very low due to the large impedance mismatch between the medium and the transducer su…

Nature Inspired Scenes for Guided Mindfulness Training: Presence, Perceived Restorativeness and Meditation Depth

2019

Practicing mindfulness-based stress reeducation and other contemplative practices generates a number of health and human performance benefits. However, limited access to qualified training and practice support, as well as poor practice environments, makes it difficult to sustain the habits necessary to develop the attentional regulation skills needed to benefit from mindfulness. In this paper, we report on our research, which focuses on developing immersive environments to support mindfulness-based stress reduction practices. We specifically look at how the design of a virtual environment can foster a restorative experience, if that restorative experience is associated with the depth of the…
