Shape transitions of giant liposomes induced by an anisotropic spontaneous curvature

2000

International audience; We explore how a magnetic field breaks the symmetry of an initially spherical giant liposome filled with a magnetic colloid. The condition of rotational symmetry along the field axis leads either to a prolate or to an oblate ellipsoid. We demonstrate that an electrostatic interaction between the nanoparticles and the membrane triggers the shape transition. PACS numbers: 75.

Microwave heating of water in a rectangular waveguide: Validating EOF-Library against COMSOL multiphysics and existing numerical studies

2019

The purpose of this work is two-fold: first, we successfully validate our open-source tool EOF-Library, which efficiently couples Elmer FEM and OpenFOAM, against COMSOL Multiphysics, a commercial simulation package; second, we inform about significant discrepancies between our results and the experimental and simulation data found in a series of research papers. We reproduce the previously published numerical simulations wherein microwaves are supplied to a water domain through a rectangular waveguide, inducing convective flow. This is a conjugate problem with weakly coupled electromagnetics, heat transfer and fluid dynamics. It involves effects such as permittivity dependence on temperatur…

Magnetic Properties Experiments on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit at Gusev Crater

2004

The magnetic properties experiments are designed to help identify the magnetic minerals in the dust and rocks on Mars—and to determine whether liquid water was involved in the formation and alteration of these magnetic minerals. Almost all of the dust particles suspended in the martian atmosphere must contain ferrimagnetic minerals (such as maghemite or magnetite) in an amount of ∼2% by weight. The most magnetic fraction of the dust appears darker than the average dust. Magnetite was detected in the first two rocks ground by Spirit.

Improvement in MRS parameter estimation by joint and laterally constrained inversion of MRS and TEM data

2012

We developed a new scheme for joint and laterally constrained inversion (LCI) of magnetic resonance sounding (MRS) data and transient electromagnetic (TEM) data, which greatly improves the estimation of the MRS model parameters. During the last few decades, electrical and electromagnetic methods have been widely used for groundwater investigation, but they suffer from some inherent limitations; for example, equivalent layer sequences. Furthermore, the water content information is only empirically correlated to resistivity of the formation. MRS is a noninvasive geophysical technique that directly quantifies the water content distribution from surface measurements. The resistivity informatio…

Vircator Technologies Comparison and Novel Anode Analysis

2021

High Power Microwave (HPM) sources are widely used as signal sources in radar, jammer, and Counter Improvised Explosive Devices (CIED). Such devices usually are heavy and bulky, characteristics that are in conflict with the small weight and power (SWaP) approach so that it is practically impossible to mount such HPMs on several platforms with reduced spaces (e.g., avionic, UAVs). During the last century, several devices have been proposed, all of them heavy due to the components that they need such as the magnetic material of the Magnetron, Klystron, or Gyrotron. Considering the HPM sources for pulsed applications, the VIRtual CAThode oscillatOR (Vircator) represents the best candidate due …

Mutual inductance of thick coils for arbitrary relative orientation and position

2017

An exact solution method has been developed recently which gives the mutual inductance of two thin cylindrical coils in terms of line integrals of a new kind of vector potential, induced by the primary coil, around the two circular edges of the secondary coil. This paper describes the extension of this method to thick coils, by wrapping two radial integrations around these line integrals. Results are presented for two pairs of conventional coils and a combination of a superconducting coil and a Bitter coil. Excellent agreement with existing results for non coaxial coils was obtained. The trade-off between accuracy and computing time is also examined.

Dispersive magnetic immunoaffinity extraction. Anatoxin-a determination.

2017

Specific monoclonal antibodies were coupled with magnetic Sepharose-based beads and used, for the first time. The methodology was applied to preconcentrate anatoxin-a from water and the later determination by ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). Dispersive magnetic immunoaffinity (d-MagIA) extraction methodology provided a limit of detection of 0.02μgL-1 and a satisfactory precision with a relative standard deviation lower than 15%. Recoveries were evaluated at 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0μgL-1 anatoxin-a with quantitative values from 91 to 115%. Additionally, isobaric interferences with phenylalanine were completely avoided by the use of the developed d-MagIA extraction coupled to IMS determinations.

A PAS domain with an oxygen labile [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster in the oxygen sensor kinase NreB of Staphylococcus carnosus.

2008

The cytoplasmic histidine sensor kinase NreB of Staphylococcus carnosus responds to O(2) and controls together with the response regulator NreC the expression of genes of nitrate/nitrite respiration. nreBC homologous genes were found in Staphylococcus strains and Bacillus clausii, and a modified form was found in some Lactobacillus strains. NreB contains a sensory domain with similarity to heme B binding PAS domains. Anaerobically prepared NreB of S. carnosus exhibited a (diamagnetic) [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster when assessed by Mossbauer spectroscopy. Upon reaction with air, the cluster was degraded with a half-life of approximately 2.5 min. No significant amounts of Mossbauer or EPR detectable i…

Wavelet-like bases for thin-wire integral equations in electromagnetics

2005

AbstractIn this paper, wavelets are used in solving, by the method of moments, a modified version of the thin-wire electric field integral equation, in frequency domain. The time domain electromagnetic quantities, are obtained by using the inverse discrete fast Fourier transform. The retarded scalar electric and vector magnetic potentials are employed in order to obtain the integral formulation. The discretized model generated by applying the direct method of moments via point-matching procedure, results in a linear system with a dense matrix which have to be solved for each frequency of the Fourier spectrum of the time domain impressed source. Therefore, orthogonal wavelet-like basis trans…

Polyoxometalate Monolayers in Langmuir-Blodgett Films

2005

Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a variety of polyoxometalates of different shapes, sizes, and charges were prepared by taking advantage of the adsorption properties of these polyanions on a positively charged monolayer of an organic surfactant spread on water. Three different aspects were investigated. 1) The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of LB films containing the easily reducible polyoxoanion [P2Mo18O62]6-. Absorbance changes of these LB films deposited onto an ITO substrate have been induced by repeated switching of the applied potential. These changes are due to the formation of the colored reduced forms of the polyanion. Coloration and bleaching of the LB f…
