Ocean acidification affects fish spawning but not paternity at CO2 seeps

Fish exhibit impaired sensory function and altered behaviour at levels of ocean acidification expected to occur owing to anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions during this century. We provide the first evidence of the effects of ocean acidification on reproductive behaviour of fish in the wild. Satellite and sneaker male ocellated wrasse (Symphodus ocellatus) compete to fertilize eggs guarded by dominant nesting males. Key mating behaviours such as dominant male courtship and nest defence did not differ between sites with ambient versus elevated CO2 concentrations. The paper proposes a methodology based on Artificial Intelligence techniques for the automatic detection of abnormal thermal distributions in electric motors, to rapidly identify pre-faults or fault conditions. The proposed approach, applied to induction motors of different sizes, installed in waterworks plants, is based on the execution of Thermographic Non-Destructive Tests, which allow identifying abnormal operating conditions without interrupting the ordinary working conditions of the system. Generalized Einstein-Maxwell field equations in the Palatini formalism

We derive a new set of field equations within the framework of the Palatini formalism.These equations are a natural generalization of the Einstein-Maxwell equations which arise by adding a function $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{Q})$, with $\mathcal{Q}\equiv F^{\alpha\beta}F_{\alpha\beta}$ to the Palatini Lagrangian $f(R,Q)$.The result we obtain can be viewed as the coupling of gravity with a nonlinear extension of the electromagnetic field.In addition,a new method is introduced to solve the algebraic equation associated to the Ricci tensor.

This work addresses the problem of infrared mass renormalization for a scalar electron in a translation-invariant model of non-relativistic QED. We assume that the interaction of the electron with the quantized electromagnetic field comprises a fixed ultraviolet regularization and an infrared regularization parametrized by $\sigma>0$. For the value $p=0$ of the conserved total momentum of electron and photon field, bounds on the renormalized mass are established which are uniform in $\sigma\to0$, and the existence of a ground state is proved. A weakly-interacting many-body system of Rydberg polaritons based on electromagnetically induced transparency

We proposed utilizing a medium with a high optical depth (OD) and a Rydberg state of low principal quantum number, $n$, to create a weakly-interacting many-body system of Rydberg polaritons, based on the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We experimentally verified the mean field approach to weakly-interacting Rydberg polaritons, and observed the phase shift and attenuation induced by the dipole-dipole interaction (DDI). The DDI-induced phase shift or attenuation can be viewed as a consequence of the elastic or inelastic collisions among the Rydberg polaritons. The sublethal zinc toxicity to Artemia parthenogenetica as regards the possibility of colonization of zinc polluted salterns by means of cysts has been assessed by a cyst hatching assay and a life table approach. Emergence and hatching at different times as well as the whole hatching profile were taken as end-points for evaluating success of development. Demographic and reproductive parameters calculated according to the Lotka equation were used as an indicator of the chronic toxicity of the population. Studies on heat shock proteins in sea urchin development

Work on stress proteins in sea urchin embryos carried out over the last 20 years is reviewed and the following major results are described. Entire sea urchin embryos, if subjected to a rise in temperature at any postblastular stage undergo a wave of heat shock protein (hsp) synthesis and survive. If subjected to the same rise between fertilization and blastula formation, they are not yet able to synthesize hsp and die. Four clones coding for the major hsp, hsp70, have been isolated and sequenced; evidence for the existence of a heat shock factor has been provided, and a mechanism for the developmental regulation of hsp synthesis discussed.
