Flexibility of Thiel's embalmed cadavers: the explanation is probably in the muscles

2011

International audience; Introduction The flexibility of cadavers conserved using Thiel's embalming method remains unexplained. We aimed to perform microscopic comparison of muscle and tendon fibres from fresh cadavers (FC), formaldehyde-preserved cadavers (FPC) and cadavers conserved by Thiel's method (TC). Methods Muscle and tendon biopsies performed on FC, FPC and TC were conditioned and stained by Masson's trichrome, Sirius red and Ramon y Cajal, then studied under optical microscope. Alignment and integrity of the muscle and tendon fibres were studied. Results We observed a modification of the muscle fibres in all specimens from TC, regardless of the type of staining used. The muscle fi…

Mutations in the β-tropomyosin (TPM2) gene – a rare cause of nemaline myopathy

2002

Nemaline myopathy is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous muscle disorder. In the nebulin gene we have detected a number of autosomal recessive mutations. Both autosomal dominant and recessive mutations have been detected in the genes for alpha -actin and alpha -tropomyosin 3. A recessive mutation causing nemaline myopathy among the Old Order Amish has recently been identified in the gene for slow skeletal muscle troponin T. As linkage studies had shown that at least one further gene exists for nemaline myopathy, we investigated another tropomyosin gene expressed in skeletal muscle, the beta -tropomyosin 2 gene. Screening 66 unrelated patients, using single strand conformation polymor…

Pliocene tourmaline rhyolite dykes from Ikaria Island in the Aegean back-arc region: geodynamic implications

2009

Very rare rhyolite dykes cross-cutting a Miocene I-type biotite-granite were discovered on Ikaria Island in the Aegean back-arc region. Their intrusion postdates exhumation of the granite to brittle crust at about 6.0-3.6 Ma; hence a Pliocene age is inferred. Petrological, geochemical and isotopic arguments indicate an origin through melting of crustal lithologies (tourmaline greywackes/semipelites) with no detectable contribution from asthenospheric sources. Strontium isotope ratios are relatively low unlike values for sediments entering the Hellenic trench but similar to those for certain Miocene Cycladic I-type granites and low-Rb Permo-Carboniferous Cycladic basement acid orthogneisses.…

Gene-Related Protein Surplus Myopathies

2000

Numerous muscular dystrophies, such as dystrophinopathies, sarcoglycanopathies, and emerino- and laminopathies, are marked by the absence or reduction of mutant transsarcolemmal or nuclear proteins. In addition to these recently identified minus-proteinopathies, there are a growing number of plus-proteinopathies among neuromuscular disorders marked by a surplus or excess of endogenous proteins within muscle fibers of different, i.e., nontranssarcolemmal and nonnuclear types. These proteins are often filamentous; for example, desmin and actin accrue in respective desmin-related myopathies, among which are entities marked by mutant desmin, true desminopathies, and actinopathy, the latter ofte…

Congenital myopathies with inclusion bodies: a brief review

1998

Abstract Based on morphological abnormalities, congenital myopathies can be classified into several categories: (1) enzyme histochemically abnormal appearance without structural pathology, e.g. congenital fibre type disproportion or congenital fibre type uniformity; (2) abnormally placed nuclei, e.g. myotubular and centronuclear myopathies; (3) disruption of normal intrinsic structures, largely sarcomeres, e.g. central cores and minicores; (4) abnormal inclusions within muscle fibres. Several such inclusions are derived from pre-existing structures, most notably rods or nemaline bodies. Other derivatives of Z-band material are cytoplasmic bodies and possibly related inclusions as spheroid b…

Structure and Synthesis of a New Indole Alkaloid, 19 (S)-Hydroxy-Nb-methylraumacline, Obtained by the Biotransformation of Ajmaline in Plant Cell Cul…

1992

Abstract From the plant cell suspension cultures of Tauwolfia serpentina Benth ., which were cultivated in the alkaloid-production medium after feeding of ajmaline (1) , a new indole alkaloid 19- ( S )-hydroxy- N b -methylraumacline ( 4 ) was isolated. The structure of 4 first elucidated by spectroscopic analysis was determined by the chemical synthesis from ajmaline ( 1 ).

Just a foreword? Malinowski, Geertz and the anthropologist as native

2006

Read through semiotic analysis, the narrative intrigue of (the evenemential and cognitive dimension of) the anthropologist’s work reveals the epistemological configuration encasing some central and interrelated questions in anthropology: the communication-interaction between anthropologists and other inter-actants, their invention-application of some metalanguages and the subsequent intercultural translations of concepts and processes. To explore this configuration, I compare a foreword written by Malinowski and another one written by Geertz. In these forewords, they resort to refined stories to frame complex argumentations. In Malinowski’s foreword, two superposing stories are told: (1) a …

Speech treatment in nemaline myopathy: A single-subject experimental study

2020

Abstract Purpose The objective of this work was to verify the efficacy of a treatment based on myofunctional therapy techniques which aimed to improve the tongue strength, precision, and speed of a ten-year-old girl with nemaline myopathy (NM) and the repercussions of this therapy on her speech intelligibility. NM is a rare congenital muscle disorder that causes extreme muscle weakness, especially in the face and neck, as well as severe dysarthria and dysphagia, although this does not affect the nervous system or cognitive development. Method This was a single-subject experimental study which used an interrupted pre- and post-treatment time-series design, and which applied autoregressive in…

In vivo monitoring of alkaloid metabolism in hybrid plant cell cultures by 2D cryo-NMR without labelling

2003

Non-invasive measurements of alkaloid metabolism in plant cell suspension cultures of a somatic hybrid from Rauvolfia serpentina Benth. ex Kurz and Rhazya stricta Decaisne were carried out. When cell samples were taken sequentially from a stock feeding experiment, measuring times for in vivo NMR of 40 min were sufficient for following conversions of alkaloids at the natural abundance of 13C. Degradation of ajmaline added to the cells at 1.6 mM concentration to raumacline could be monitored after 96 h on a standard 800 MHz NMR instrument (Avance 800). Feeding vinorine an intermediate of ajmaline biosynthesis at 1.8 mM showed with a 500 MHz CryoProbe that the alkaloid enters two metabolic rou…
