Application of HPP in food fermentation processes

Abstract High pressure processing (HPP) is widely used in the food industry for nonthermal pasteurization of juices, ready-to-eat meals, dairy products, pet food, etc. The pasteurization effect is induced by damaging the membranes of microorganisms (leading to cell lysis) as well as by protein denaturation, thus interrupting cellular functions such as nutrient uptake, DNA replication, etc. Nevertheless, as a thermodynamic variable, pressure can also be used to enhance the fermentative processes if applied at sublethal levels (up to 50/60 MPa) to induce metabolic shifts in microorganisms, This allows accelerating the fermentative processes or even obtaining different compounds resulting from…

Dentofacial abnormalities among adolescents: A study on the prevalence and severity.

Background The objectives of this investigation were to assess prevalence and severity of dentofacial abnormalities and orthodontic treatment need among adolescents in Mangalore taluk. Material and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1340 children from randomly selected high schools. A proforma was used to record demographic data and components of the Dental Aesthetic Index [DAI] for each subject. The Chi squared test was used for analysis with p-value of 0.05). Research on personal impression forming suggests that visual perceptions of detrimental dental conditions might lead to conclusions about social impairments of the target person. Naturalizzazione, mente e conoscenza - A controversial issue regarding Quine’s naturalised epistemology is that it may involve some form of reductionism. This article focuses on one of these forms, analysing the interplay of his philosophy of mind and epistemology. Search for anomalous production of prompt like-sign muon pairs and constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model with the ATLAS detector

An inclusive search for anomalous production of two prompt, isolated muons with the same electric charge is presented. The search is performed in a data sample corresponding to 1.6  fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected in 2011 at √s=7  TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Muon pairs are selected by requiring two isolated muons of the same electric charge with pT>20  GeV and |η|<2.5. Minimal requirements are placed on the rest of the event activity. The distribution of the invariant mass of the muon pair m(μμ) is found to agree well with the background expectation. Dynamics of single semiflexible polymers in dilute solution

We study the dynamics of a single semiflexible chain in solution using computer simulations, where we systematically investigate the effect of excluded volume, chain stiffness, and hydrodynamic interactions. We achieve excellent agreement with previous theoretical considerations, but find that the crossover from the time τb, up to which free ballistic motion of the monomers describes the chain dynamics, to the times W−1 or τ0, where anomalous monomer diffusion described by Rouse-type and Zimm-type models sets in, requires two decades of time. An exact thermodynamical model of power-law temperature time scaling

In this paper a physical model for the anomalous temperature time evolution (decay) observed in complex thermodynamical system in presence of uniform heat source is provided. Measures involving temperatures T with power-law variation in time as T(t)∝tβ with β∈R shows a different evolution of the temperature time rate T(t) with respect to the temperature time-dependence T(t). Indeed the temperature evolution is a power-law increasing function whereas the temperature time rate is a power-law decreasing function of time. Dissecting the Hadronic Contributions to (g−2)μ by Schwinger’s Sum Rule

The theoretical uncertainty of $(g\ensuremath{-}2{)}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ is currently dominated by hadronic contributions. In order to express those in terms of directly measurable quantities, we consider a sum rule relating $g\ensuremath{-}2$ to an integral of a photoabsorption cross section. The sum rule, attributed to Schwinger, can be viewed as a combination of two older sum rules: Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn and Burkhardt-Cottingham. The Schwinger sum rule has an important feature, distinguishing it from the other two: the relation between the anomalous magnetic moment and the integral of a photoabsorption cross section is linear, rather than quadratic.
