Understanding the2pcore-level spectra of manganese: Photoelectron spectroscopy experiments and Anderson impurity model calculations

Using high-resolution core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and modified Anderson impurity model calculations, we study the $\mathrm{Mn}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}2p$ spectrum of manganese metal and resolve the current debate about its spectral shape. An unusual satellite feature, $1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ from the main peak, is observed in the $\mathrm{Mn}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}2{p}_{3∕2}$ spectrum of a thick Mn layer grown on Al. It originates from intra-atomic multiplet effect related to Mn atoms with large local moment. L'abolizione delle Province in Sicilia: resoconto semiserio di un rivoluzione in progress

Mentre a livello nazionale era in corso il dibattito sul destino delle Province la Regione Sicilia ha inteso anticipare i tempi procedendo all'abolizione delle proprie Province e la loro sostituzione da parte dei Liberi Consorzi comunali e delle Città metropolitane. Tuttavia l'esatto dimensionamento funzionale dei due nuovi enti resta affidato alla futura legislazione così come incerte appaiono le modalità per la riorganizzazione dei servizi del personale e delle risorse. Il dubbio che tutto rimanga come prima e che la rivoluzione si concreti nella pratica nel mantenimento dell'esistente seppur rivisto sul piano della rappresentatività politica appare molto più che fondato.

Manganese (Mn) has been associated with embryo toxicity as it impairs differentiation of neural and skeletogenic cells in vertebrates. Nevertheless, information on the mechanisms operating at the cellular level remains scant. We took advantage of an amenable embryonic model to investigate the effects of Mn in biomineral formation. Sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) embryos were exposed to Mn from fertilization, harvested at different developmental stages, and analyzed for their content in calcium (Ca), expression of skeletogenic genes, localization of germ layer markers, and activation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Catalytic and photocatalytic epoxidation of limonene: Using mesoporous silica nanoparticles as functional support for a Janus-like approach

Abstract Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) were used as a platform to design novel active materials for the catalytic and photocatalytic epoxidation of limonene. Binary systems comprised of TiO2 and MSN were used for the catalytic reaction when doped with manganese, and for the photocatalytic reaction when functionalised with hexadecyl chains or imidazolinyl groups. All of the MSN based systems were synthesized by condensation in emulsion. With the aim of introducing the diisopropylamide [NiPr(2)](-) ligand to alkali-metal-mediated manganation (AMMMn) chemistry, the temperature-dependent reactions of a 1:1:3 mixture of butylsodium, bis(trimethylsilylmethyl)manganese(II), and diisopropylamine with ferrocene in hexane/toluene have been investigated. Performed at reflux temperature, the reaction affords the surprising, ferrocene-free, hydrido product [Na(2)Mn(2) (mu-H)(2){N(iPr)(2)}(4)]2 toluene (1), the first Mn hydrido inverse crown complex. Facile formation of a meso–meso linked porphyrin dimer catalyzed by a manganese(iv)–oxo porphyrin

A manganese(IV)-oxo porphyrin catalyzes C-C bond formation between zinc porphyrins at the meso-position with a two-electron oxidant to afford the meso-meso linked porphyrin dimer efficiently. The meso-meso linked dimer is formed via formation of the porphyrin radical cation, and the rate-determining step in the catalytic cycle is the formation of a manganese(IV)-oxo porphyrin with a two-electron oxidant.

Negative Ce anomalies in Mn oxides: The role of Ce4+ mobility during water–mineral interaction

We present one of the very rare natural examples of extremely negative Ce anomalies (up to 4 orders of magnitude) in manganese oxides, caused by higher mobility of Ce4+ compared to REE3+ in an aquatic environment. The young secondary Mn oxides formed together with fluorites and goethites during water–mineral interaction in a hydrothermal fluorite vein. Our findings are in contrast to the oxidative scavenging of Ce, which is commonly observed in Mn oxides. Deep sea minerals in polymetallic nodules, crusts and hydrothermal vents are not only formed by mineralization but also by biologically driven processes involving microorganisms (biomineralization). Within the nodules, free-living and biofilm-forming bacteria provide the matrix for manganese deposition, and in cobalt-rich crusts, coccolithophores represent the dominant organisms that act as bio-seeds for an initial manganese deposition.
