Introduction: A study is made of the usefulness of cytokines (such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and interleukin-12 (IL-12)) as markers of periimplant disease (mucositis and periimplantitis). Urinaryp-cresol is elevated in young French children with autism spectrum disorder: a replication study

The aromatic compound p-cresol (4-methylphenol) has been found elevated in the urines of Italian autistic children up to 8 years of age. The present study aims at replicating these initial findings in an ethnically distinct sample and at extending them by measuring also the three components of urinary p-cresol, namely p-cresylsulfate, p-cresylglucuronate and free p-cresol. Total urinary p-cresol, p-cresylsulfate and p-cresylglucuronate were significantly elevated in 33 French autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cases compared with 33 sex- and age-matched controls (p < 0.05). Long‐term molecular differences between resilient and susceptible mice after a single traumatic exposure

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a heterogeneous disorder induced by trauma, resulting in severe long-term impairments of an individual's mental health. PTSD does not develop in every individual and, thus, some individuals are more resilient. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Liver stiffness, a non-invasive marker of liver disease: a core study group report

The ability to evaluate liver stiffness non-invasively in clinical practice by measuring transient elastography using FibroScan® has resulted in considerable interest and enthusiasm. A core study group, organized by the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver, has assessed the usefulness of FibroScan® in the diagnosis and management of liver disease in clinical practice. The group concluded that FibroScan® is a valuable, non-invasive technique and have developed a consensus report form for registering transient elastography results. In this article, we report the findings of the study group.

Autoimmune biomarkers in glaucoma patients.

There is growing evidence showing an autoimmune involvement in the pathogenesis of glaucoma, and that alterations in natural occurring autoantibody levels play a key role. The upregulation of autoantibodies can be associated with fatal conditions, but several studies demonstrate that natural autoantibodies entail also protective characteristics and influence the protein expression of neuroretinal cells. A disbalance of natural occurring autoantibodies may shift the physiological equilibrium of protective immunity leading to a predisposition for developing glaucoma. This article highlights recent advances in understanding of autoimmune mechanisms in the pathogenesis of glaucoma.
