When former military chaplains began to give marital guidance to troubled couples after the end of hostilities with the Soviet Union (1941–1944) in Finland, new information about the causes and experiences of marital problems and divorces emerged during guidance sessions. Even lengthy marriages were seen to be burdened due to the stress of reunion and men’s wartime infidelity, increased inclination to drinking and aggressive behaviour. Bone marrow biopsy in Hodgkin's lymphoma.

In the study of patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) the evaluation of bone marrow biopsy (BMB) can be difficult. In this review we analyze the main diagnostic features and the clinical risk factors of BM involvement. Although the role of BMB is criticized by some authors, its value is irreplaceable in the staging of HL and in the diagnosis of primary medullary HL. The Ann Arbor staging committee criteria should be revised and updated in the light of the current immunohistochemical studies that give a fundamental help in the diagnostic process. A single BMB should be adequate for diagnosis in most instances. In cases of suspicious involvement a controlateral BMB could be performed.

ABSTRACT Interstitial pneumonia is a frequent and critical manifestation of human cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in immunocompromised patients, in particular in recipients of bone marrow transplantation. Previous work in the murine CMV infection model has identified the lungs as a major organ site of CMV latency and recurrence. Human cytomegalovirus glycoprotein B genotypes in immunocompetent, immunocompromised, and congenitally infected Italian populations

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) strains, obtained from immunocompetent and immunocompromised Italian hosts, were typed with glycoprotein B (gB) gene restriction analysis. A predominant circulation of HCMV strains with gB type 2 and 3 was detected in both the immunocompetent host with a primary HCMV infection and the immunocompromised host with or without HCMV disease. No association between gB types and subjects with different risks of developing HCMV disease was found. All four gB genotypes were capable of causing congenital infection in Italian babies, with gB type 1 accounting for 50% of the strains examined in symptomatic infants and a remarkable incidence of gB type 4 viruses.

In this work, the first vaccine is reported based on a PeptoSome, which contains a model antigen (SIINFEKL) and adjuvant (CpG). PeptoSomes are polypept(o)ide-based polymersomes built of a block-copolymer with polysarcosine (PSar) as the hydrophilic block (X n = 111) and poly(benzyl-glutamic acid) (PGlu(OBn)) as the hydrophobic one (X n = 46). The polypept(o)ide is obtained with low dispersity index of 1.32 by controlled ring-opening polymerization. Vesicle formation by dual centrifugation technique allows for loading of vesicles up to 40 mol%. A lambda-light chain-IgA plasmocytoma, accompanied by a changing clinical picture of fever, nocturnal perspirations and weight loss, developed in a 46-year-old homosexual male with AIDS, stage IV (classification according to the Centers for Disease Control). He had been suffering from recurrent Salmonella septicaemia. Serum protein electrophoresis demonstrated marked elevation of the beta- and gamma-fractions (44% and 24%, respectively). Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of 20 patients with multiple myeloma (MM) were assayed for clonality by Southern blot and cell surface marker analysis. Eight samples showed monoclonal origin of circulating lymphocytes by demonstrating rearrangements of the heavy chain immunoglobulin gene (IgH). In selected experiments, comparison of IgH rearrangements of bone marrow plasma cells and peripheral blood-derived mononuclear cells, highly enriched for B lymphocytes, proved to be identical. Pure populations of in vitro propagated bone marrow-derived macrophages are constitutively Ia negative. Co-culturing of these cells with recombinant interferon-gamma (rIFN-gamma) resulted in the appearance of high amounts of Ia antigens at the cell surface of essentially all cells.
