On complements of 𝔉-residuals of finite groups
2016
ABSTRACTA formation 𝔉 of finite groups has the generalized Wielandt property for residuals, or 𝔉 is a GWP-formation, if the 𝔉-residual of a group generated by two 𝔉-subnormal subgroups is the subgroup generated by their 𝔉-residuals. The main aim of the paper is to determine some sufficient conditions for a finite group to split over its 𝔉-residual.
Characters and Sylow 2-subgroups of maximal class revisited
2018
Abstract We give two ways to distinguish from the character table of a finite group G if a Sylow 2-subgroup of G has maximal class. We also characterize finite groups with Sylow 3-subgroups of order 3 in terms of their principal 3-block.
The McKay conjecture and Galois automorphisms
2004
The main problem of representation theory of finite groups is to find proofs of several conjectures stating that certain global invariants of a finite group G can be computed locally. The simplest of these conjectures is the ?McKay conjecture? which asserts that the number of irreducible complex characters of G of degree not divisible by p is the same if computed in a p-Sylow normalizer of G. In this paper, we propose a much stronger version of this conjecture which deals with Galois automorphisms. In fact, the same idea can be applied to the celebrated Alperin and Dade conjectures.
Kirkman's tetrahedron and the fifteen schoolgirl problem
2011
We give a visual construction of two solutions to Kirkman's fifteen schoolgirl problem by combining the fifteen simplicial elements of a tetrahedron. Furthermore, we show that the two solutions are nonisomorphic by introducing a new combinatorial algorithm. It turns out that the two solutions are precisely the two nonisomorphic arrangements of the 35 projective lines of PG(3,2) into seven classes of five mutually skew lines. Finally, we show that the two solutions are interchanged by the canonical duality of the projective space.
Composition of quasiconformal mappings and functions in Triebel-Lizorkin spaces
2012
Let α > 0 and p ∈ [1, ∞) satisfy αp ≤ n. Suppose that f: Rn Rn is a K-quasiconformal mapping and let u ∈ Wα, p(Rn) have compact support. We find an optimal value of β = β(α, K, n) such that u○f ∈ Wβ, p(Rn). We also give an answer to the analogous problem where we moreover assume that u is bounded.
The constant osculating rank of the Wilking manifold
2008
We prove that the osculating rank of the Wilking manifold V3 = (SO (3) × SU (3)) / U• (2), endowed with the metric over(g, )1, equals 2. The knowledge of the osculating rank allows us to solve the differential equation of the Jacobi vector fields. These results can be applied to determine the area and the volume of geodesic spheres and balls. To cite this article: E. Macias-Virgos et al., C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. Hölder inequality for functions that are integrable with respect to bilinear maps
2008
Let $(\Omega, \Sigma, \mu)$ be a finite measure space, $1\le p<\infty$, $X$ be a Banach space $X$ and $B:X\times Y \to Z$ be a bounded bilinear map. We say that an $X$-valued function $f$ is $p$-integrable with respect to $B$ whenever $\sup_{\|y\|=1} \int_\Omega \|B(f(w),y)\|^p\,d\mu<\infty$. We get an analogue to Hölder's inequality in this setting.
The Ptolemy and Zbăganu constants of normed spaces
2010
Abstract In every inner product space H the Ptolemy inequality holds: the product of the diagonals of a quadrilateral is less than or equal to the sum of the products of the opposite sides. In other words, ‖ x − y ‖ ‖ z − w ‖ ≤ ‖ x − z ‖ ‖ y − w ‖ + ‖ z − y ‖ ‖ x − w ‖ for any points w , x , y , z in H . It is known that for each normed space ( X , ‖ ⋅ ‖ ) , there exists a constant C such that for any w , x , y , z ∈ X , we have ‖ x − y ‖ ‖ z − w ‖ ≤ C ( ‖ x − z ‖ ‖ y − w ‖ + ‖ z − y ‖ ‖ x − w ‖ ) . The smallest such C is called the Ptolemy constant of X and is denoted by C P ( X ) . We study the relationships between this constant and the geometry of the space X , and hence with metric fix…
ON THE INDEX OF VECTOR FIELDS TANGENT TO HYPERSURFACES WITH NON-ISOLATED SINGULARITIES
2002
Let $F$ be a germ of a holomorphic function at $0$ in ${\bb C}^{n+1}$ , having $0$ as a critical point not necessarily isolated, and let $\tilde{X}:= \sum^n_{j=0} X^j(\partial/\partial z_j)$ be a germ of a holomorphic vector field at $0$ in ${\bb C}^{n+1}$ with an isolated zero at $0$ , and tangent to $V := F^{-1}(0)$ . Consider the ${\cal O}_{V,0}$ -complex obtained by contracting the germs of Kahler differential forms of $V$ at $0$ \renewcommand{\theequation}{0.\arabic{equation}} \begin{equation} \Omega^i_{V,0}:=\frac{\Omega^i_{{\bb C}^{n+1},0}}{F\Omega^i_{{\bb C}^{n+1},0}+dF\wedge{\Omega^{i-1}}_{{\bb C}^{n+1}},0} \end{equation} with the vector field $X:=\tilde{X}|_V$ on $V$ : \begin{equa…
Hausdorff measures, Hölder continuous maps and self-similar fractals
1993
Let f: A → ℝn be Hölder continuous with exponent α, 0 < α ≼ 1, where A ⊂ ℝm has finite m-dimensional Lebesgue measure. Then, as is easy to see and well-known, the s-dimensional Hausdorif measure HS(fA) is finite for s = m/α. Many fractal-type sets fA also have positive Hs measure. This is so for example if m = 1 and f is a natural parametrization of the Koch snow flake curve in ℝ2. Then s = log 4/log 3 and α = log 3/log 4. In this paper we study the question of what s-dimensional sets in can intersect some image fA in a set of positive Hs measure where A ⊂ ℝm and f: A → ℝn is (m/s)-Hölder continuous. In Theorem 3·3 we give a general density result for such Holder surfacesfA which implies…
