A numerical approach to Blow-up issues for dispersive perturbations of Burgers' equation

2014

We provide a detailed numerical study of various issues pertaining to the dynamics of the Burgers equation perturbed by a weak dispersive term: blow-up in finite time versus global existence, nature of the blow-up, existence for "long" times, and the decomposition of the initial data into solitary waves plus radiation. We numerically construct solitons for fractionary Korteweg-de Vries equations.

Almost Sharp Global Well-Posedness for a class of Dissipative and Dispersive Equations on R in Low Regularity Sobolev Spaces

2014

In this paper we obtain global well-posedness in low order Sobolev spaces of higher order KdV type equations with dissipation. The result is optimal in the sense that the flow-map is not twice continuously differentiable in rougher spaces. The solution is shown to be smooth for positive times.

Reconstruction from boundary measurements for less regular conductivities

2012

In this paper, following Nachman's idea and Haberman and Tataru's idea, we reconstruct $C^1$ conductivity $\gamma$ or Lipchitz conductivity $\gamma$ with small enough value of $|\nabla log\gamma|$ in a Lipschitz domain $\Omega$ from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $\Lambda_{\gamma}$. In the appendix the authors and R. M. Brown recover the gradient of a $C^1$-conductivity at the boundary of a Lipschitz domain from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map $\Lambda_{\gamma}$.

Stability estimates for the magnetic Schr\"odinger operator with partial measurements

2020

In this article, we study stability estimates when recovering magnetic fields and electric potentials in a simply connected open subset in $R^n$ with $n \geq 3$, from measurements on open subsets of its boundary. This inverse problem is associated with a magnetic Schr\"odinger operator. Our estimates are quantitative versions of the uniqueness results obtained by D. Dos Santos Ferreira, C. E. Kenig, J. Sj\"ostrand and G. Uhlmann in [13]. The moduli of continuity are of logarithmic type.

Carleman estimates for sub-Laplacians on Carnot groups

2022

In this note, we establish a new Carleman estimate with singular weights for the sub-Laplacian on a Carnot group $\mathbb G$ for functions satisfying the discrepancy assumption in (2.16) below. We use such an estimate to derive a sharp vanishing order estimate for solutions to stationary Schr\"odinger equations.

Asymptotic behavior for the heat equation in nonhomogeneous media with critical density

2012

We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the heat equation in nonhomogeneous media with critical singular density $$ |x|^{-2}\partial_{t}u=\Delta u, \quad \hbox{in} \ \real^N\times(0,\infty). $$ The asymptotic behavior proves to have some interesting and quite striking properties. We show that there are two completely different asymptotic profiles depending on whether the initial data $u_0$ vanishes at $x=0$ or not. Moreover, in the former the results are true only for radially symmetric solutions, and we provide counterexamples to convergence to symmetric profiles in the general case.

Large time behavior for a porous medium equation in a nonhomogeneous medium with critical density

2013

We study the large time behavior of solutions to the porous medium equation in nonhomogeneous media with critical singular density $$ |x|^{-2}\partial_{t}u=u^m, \quad \hbox{in} \ \real^N\times(0,\infty), $$ where $m>1$ and $N\geq3$. The asymptotic behavior proves to have some interesting and striking properties. We show that there are different asymptotic profiles for the solutions, depending on whether the continuous initial data $u_0$ vanishes at $x=0$ or not. Moreover, when $u_0(0)=0$, we show the convergence towards a profile presenting a discontinuity in form of a shockwave, coming from an unexpected asymptotic simplification to a conservation law, while when $u_0(0)>0$, the li…

On the modified fractional Korteweg-de Vries and related equations

2020

We consider in this paper modified fractional Korteweg-de Vries and related equations (modified Burgers-Hilbert and Whitham). They have the advantage with respect to the usual fractional KdV equation to have a defocusing case with a different dynamics. We will distinguish the weakly dispersive case where the phase velocity is unbounded for low frequencies and tends to zero at infinity and the strongly dispersive case where the phase velocity vanishes at the origin and goes to infinity at infinity. In the former case, the nonlinear hyperbolic effects dominate for large data, leading to the possibility of shock formation though the dispersive effects manifest for small initial data where scat…

A rigidity problem on the round sphere

2015

We consider a class of overdetermined problems in rotationally symmetric spaces, which reduce to the classical Serrin's overdetermined problem in the case of the Euclidean space. We prove some general integral identities for rotationally symmetric spaces which imply a rigidity result in the case of the round sphere.

Harnack estimates for degenerate parabolic equations modeled on the subelliptic $p-$Laplacian

2014

Abstract We establish a Harnack inequality for a class of quasi-linear PDE modeled on the prototype ∂ t u = − ∑ i = 1 m X i ⁎ ( | X u | p − 2 X i u ) where p ⩾ 2 , X = ( X 1 , … , X m ) is a system of Lipschitz vector fields defined on a smooth manifold M endowed with a Borel measure μ, and X i ⁎ denotes the adjoint of X i with respect to μ. Our estimates are derived assuming that (i) the control distance d generated by X induces the same topology on M ; (ii) a doubling condition for the μ-measure of d-metric balls; and (iii) the validity of a Poincare inequality involving X and μ. Our results extend the recent work in [16] , [36] , to a more general setting including the model cases of (1)…
