Chemical characterisation of the gases released at Gyali Island, Dodecanese, Greece and preliminary estimation of the CO2 output

2021

Greece belongs to the most geodynamically active regions of the world and as such, it has to be considered an area of intense geogenic degassing. In terms of carbon, the territory is characterized by the high hydrothermal and volcanic activity of the South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc (SAAVA), and by widespread geological seeps of buried carbon dioxide and methane. In the present work, we investigate the island of Gyali located in the volcanic system Kos-Gyali-Nisyros. Nine gas samples have been collected on the island of Gyali in areas found both on land, in a small lake (∼2000 m2) along its beach, and in the sea close to the shore at shallow depths (<20 m). Results show that CO2 is the p…

Pikosekunžu precizitātes laika intervālu mērīšanas un analīzes skaitlisko metožu izstrāde satelītu lāzerlokācijā pielietojumam

2002

Lāzerlokācijas metožu izmantošana zinātniskās programmās, kuras saistītas ar globālās ģeocentrisko koordinātu sistēmas definēšanu, Zemes rotācijas tekošo parametru noteikšanu, Zemes polu kustības mērījumiem, kontinentu dreifa noteikšanu, iespējamo zemestrīču prognozēšanu, prasa ļoti augstas precizitātes (0.5-2 cm) satelītu attālumu mērījumu rezultātus. Eksistējošie lāzeru tālmēri, daudzos gadījumos, nepilnīgi atbilst šīm prasībām, dodot precizitāti ap 4 cm. Risinot minētos lokācijas uzdevumus, liela loma ir laika intervālu analizatoru augstai izšķiršanas spējai. Satelītu lokācijā laika intervāla atsevišķa mērījuma vidējā kvadrātiskā kļūda nedrīkst pārsniegt dažus desmitus pikosekunžu, pie i…

Vibrational properties of the surface-nonbridging oxygen in silica nanoparticles

2008

By studying the site-selective luminescence spectra of oxidized silica nanoparticles we identify the electronic and the vibrational lines associated with the surface nonbridging oxygen, $\ensuremath{\equiv}{\text{Si-O}}^{\ifmmode\bullet\else\textbullet\fi{}}$. This defect emits a zero-phonon line inhomogeneously distributed around 2.0 eV with full width at half maximum of 0.04 eV, weakly coupled with the local ${\text{Si-O}}^{\ifmmode\bullet\else\textbullet\fi{}}$ stretching mode whose frequency is measured to be $920\text{ }{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. These findings are different from those of the well-characterized defect in the bulk silica thus evidencing structural peculiarities of …

Boron doping of silicon rich carbides: Electrical properties

2013

Boron doped multilayers based on silicon carbide/silicon rich carbide, aimed at the formation of silicon nanodots for photovoltaic applications, are studied. X-ray diffraction confirms the formation of crystallized Si and 3C-SiC nanodomains. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy indicates the occurrence of remarkable interdiffusion between adjacent layers. However, the investigated material retains memory of the initial dopant distribution. Electrical measurements suggest the presence of an unintentional dopant impurity in the intrinsic SiC matrix. The overall volume concentration of nanodots is determined by optical simulation and is shown not to contribute to lateral conduction. Remarka…

Gold coated porous silicon nanocomposite as a substrate for photoluminescence-based immunosensor suitable for the determination of Aflatoxin B1.

2017

Abstract A rapid and low cost photoluminescence (PL) immunosensor for the determination of low concentrations of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) has been developed. This immunosensor was based on porous silicon (PSi) covered by thin gold layer (Au) and modified by antibodies against AFB1 (anti-AFB1). PSi layer was formed on silicon substrate, then the surface of PSi was covered by 30 nm layer of gold (PSi/Au) using electrochemical and chemical deposition methods and in such ways PSi/Au (El.) and PSi/Au (Chem.) structures were formed, respectively. In order to find PSi/Au the most efficiently suitable for PL-based sensor design, structure several different PSi/Au (El.) and PSi/Au (Chem.) structures were…

Skimager for the objective erythema estimation in atopic dogs

2020

In this study, the severity of canine skin erythema was assessed objectively for the first time. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common canine inflammatory and pruritic skin disease associated with an allergic reaction to exogenous allergens. The monitoring of skin erythema over time with lesion severity scales like the CADESI-4 is an essential diagnostic and research tool, especially for clinical trials. Currently, the erythema assessment is subjective due to visual estimation. In our study, we calculated the erythema index (EI) in 14 atopic dogs based on the analysis of multispectral skin images taken with the Skimager device. The relationship between the EI and a visual erythema estimation w…

Testing the “physical model concept” by soil loss data measured in Sicily

2012

The best possible model to predict the erosion from an area of land has been suggested to be a physical model of the area that has similar soil type, land use, size, shape, slope and erosive inputs. Therefore, a replicated plot has to be considered the best possible, unbiased, real world model. In this paper the physical model concept was tested by using soil loss data collected on plots of different length at the experimental station of Sparacia, in Sicily (South Italy). This investigation supported the conclusions that i) a coefficient of determination between measured and predicted soil loss values of 0.77 has to be considered as the best-case prediction scenario and ii) an uncalibrated …

Gravitational Lensing of Supernova Neutrinos

2006

The black hole at the center of the galaxy is a powerful lens for supernova neutrinos. In the very special circumstance of a supernova near the extended line of sight from Earth to the galactic center, lensing could dramatically enhance the neutrino flux at Earth and stretch the neutrino pulse.

Multi-site analytical evaluation of a chemiluminescent magnetic microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) for sirolimus on the Abbott ARCHITECT analyzer.

2009

Objective This study evaluated a new chemiluminescent magnetic microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) for sirolimus on the ARCHITECT analyzer. Design and methods Patient and laboratory proficiency samples were tested at three European sites and one site in the United States. Results The CMIA total %CV's were all < 8% and the Limit of Quantification (LOQ) was < 1.52 ng/mL across the four sites. It cross-reacts to sirolimus metabolites F4 and F5 and showed no hematocrit interference over a range of 25% to 55%. Patient specimen correlations to three LC/MS/MS methods gave R ≥ 0.91 at three sites and mean biases of 14%, 25% and 39%. CMIA patient specimen correlations to the Abbott IMx gave R ≥ 0.94 at…

The performance of the cryogenic buffer-gas stopping cell of SHIPTRAP

2018

Direct high-precision mass spectrometry of the heaviest elements with SHIPTRAP, at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany, requires high efficiency to deal with the low production rates of such exotic nuclides. A second-generation gas stopping cell, operating at cryogenic temperatures, was developed and recently integrated into the relocated system to boost the overall efficiency. Offline measurements using 223Ra and 225Ac recoil-ion sources placed inside the gas volume were performed to characterize the gas stopping cell with respect to purity and extraction efficiency. In addition, a first online test using the fusion-evaporation residue 254No was performed, resulting in a combined stopping and extrac…
