The odour of human milk: Its chemical variability and detection by newborns

International audience; Human milk odour has for long elicited research interest with regard to its function in breastfeeding initiation. The present review aims to provide an overview of the behavioural effects of human milk odour in the human neonate, considering different types of response measures in a feeding or non-feeding context. Further, an overview of the current knowledge of odorant composition and factors influencing milk odour is provided by summarizing results from analytical studies using olfactometry, and addressing changes in milk odour due to storage, lactational stage, and maternal dietary intake of odorous substances. We finally highlight some issues for future research.

Reactions of the divalent germylene Ge(ArMe6)2 (ArMe6 = C6H3-2,6-{C6H2-2,4,6-(CH3)3}2) with water or methanol gave the Ge(IV) insertion product (ArMe6)2Ge(H)OH (1) or (ArMe6)2Ge(H)OMe (2), respectively. In contrast, its stannylene congener Sn(ArMe6)2 reacted with water or methanol to produce the Sn(II) species {ArMe6Sn(μ-OH)}2 (3) or {ArMe6Sn(μ-OMe)}2 (4), respectively, with elimination of ArMe6H. Compounds 1–4 were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy as well as by X-ray crystallography. The mutual influence of p53 and its antagonist, the Mdm2 oncogene, is closed in a feedback. Background and Objectives: The incidence of chronic pain is 11-24% in general population, whereas it affects 50% of hemodialyzed subjects and is often secondary to comorbidities, CKD-related complications and certain clinical procedures. Consequently, a better approach in evaluating pain as a “symptom” and in managing it adequately is required for these patients. Methods: 33% of the 300 patients enrolled properly consigned the questionnaires. The mean age of dialyzed patients was 52.2±11.2 years, whereas 54.9±10.7 years was the mean age for CKD patients. The transport of selected dipeptides through supported liquid membranes impregnated with di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid in n-dihexyletherhas been investigated. The fluxes depend on the side chain of amino acids, presence in the peptide structure. The highest fluxes were obtainedfor the peptides extracted with the highest efficiency. It has been found that the hydrophobicity of investigated peptides, was not the major factor, influences their SLM permeation. On the high-pressure phase stability and elastic properties ofβ-titanium alloys

We have studied the compressibility and stability of different β-titanium alloys at high pressure, including binary Ti–Mo, Ti–24Nb–4Zr–8Sn (Ti2448) and Ti–36Nb–2Ta–0.3O (gum metal). We observed stability of the β phase in these alloys to 40 GPa, well into the ω phase region in the P–T diagram of pure titanium. Gum metal was pressurised above 70 GPa and forms a phase with a crystal structure similar to the η phase of pure Ti. The bulk moduli determined for the different alloys range from 97 ± 3 GPa (Ti2448) to 124 ± 6 GPa (Ti–16.8Mo–0.13O).

Ultraviolet-induced photodissociation and photo-isomerization of the three most stable conformers (SSC, GAC, and AAT) of glycolic acid are investigated in a low-temperature solid argon matrix using FTIR spectroscopy and employing laser radiation with wavelengths of 212 nm, 226 nm, and 230 nm. The present work broadens the wavelength range of photochemical studies of glycolic acid, thus extending the understanding of the overall photochemistry of the compound.
