Passively ever after: Representation of Women in Disney’s Enchanted
2010
Satuja on usein kritisoitu niiden naiskuvista. Etenkin Disneyn saduissa sankarittaret esitetään usein passiivisina, avuttomina kaunottarina. Lisäksi useissa saduissa sankarittarella on vastassaan roistotar, joka puolestaan esitetään aktiivisena ja itsenäisenä naisena. Sosiaalikonstructionistisen kielikäsityksen mukaan kieli rakentaa todellisuuttamme. Niinpä esimerkiksi satujen tarjoamat representaatiot eivät pelkästään heijasta nykyisiä naiskuviamme, vaan myös …
TCP Performance in Mobile Ad hoc Networks
2013
International audience; In this paper, we present a survey of TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) protocol for better performance in the MANET (Mobile Ad Hoc Network). After a short presentation of the main features of TCP, we give the most important problems from which TCP suffer in MANET. We present after that some approaches proposed in the literature in order to improve its performance. Our paper contains also a performance evaluation of TCP NewReno and TCP Vegas transport protocols under AODV and DSR routing protocols. The simulations are conducted under varying conditions of number of TCP connections, number of nodes and mobility.

Based on two surveys, one on the fellows (n = 45) and one on a control group (n = 52), the article discusses the impact the fellowship education has on the journalists and their careers. Device-to-device (D2D) communications provide such an increase by allowing nearby u…
The Chinese as targets in Polish humorous discourse
2019
Abstract The paper discusses contemporary Polish humor which features references to Chinese language and culture. Together with the ideological, political, financial and economic visibility of China, its presence in Polish humorous discourse is on the rise. Jokes, cabaret sketches and visual materials, such as memes, more and more frequently use the Chinese as targets for entertaining the audience. The article will analyze the instances of Polish humorous discourse (largely Internet memes) to show which are the most frequent specific stereotypes about the Chinese and how that relates to Davies’s models of target choice. The results suggest that Polish humor about the Chinese as an untypical…

Centralization and decentralization are key concepts in debates that focus on the (anti)democratic character of digital societies. Centralization is understood as the control over communication and data flows, and decentralization as giving it (back) to users. Communication and media research focuses on centralization put forward by dominant digital media platforms, such as Facebook and Google, and governments. Decentralization is investigated regarding its potential in civil society, i.e., hacktivism, (encryption) technologies, and grass-root technology movements. As content-based media companies increasingly engage with technology, they move into the focus of critical media studies. Moreo…
Antibiotics and food in the American press
2021
AbstractThe emergence of antimicrobial resistant infections from food is well documented in the scientific literature but, in this kind of matter, the public opinion is an important policy driver and is vastly forged by traditional media. Here, we propose a text mining study through about 500 articles from two reference daily U.S. newspapers to assess the media coverage of this issue. Our results indicate that, since the middle of the 80s, the two journals considered here adopted a very different narrative around the issue, echoing civil society concerns in one case and the official discourse in the other.
Applied Social Anthropology in the Researcher’s Own Society
2014
Professor Arne Martin Klausen (1927-) is the only social anthropologist in Norway who has tried to analyse the culture of the country as a whole. In doing this, he has explored several central themes of the country’s culture; like egalitarianism, the class journey, the strong tradition for development aid to poor countries, connected to a so-called humanitarian super-power which in its turn was an extension of Christian mission, the very wide-spread newspaper reading; however self-centered to national and local issues and finally, the collision between an elitist Olympic culture with Norwegian egalitarianism. Klausen also tried to tie some threads together in editing a collection of essays …
