'New' vs 'old' leaderships: the campaign of Spanish general elections 2015 on Twitter

2016

The focus of this research is to analyze the activity on Twitter, during the campaign for the 2015 general elections in Spain, of the leaders of the main Spanish political parties: Mariano Rajoy (PP), Pedro Sánchez (PSOE), Pablo Iglesias (Podemos) and Albert Rivera (Ciudadanos). That means: how many messages and what types of messages are published; what topics they focus on; and the main features of using Twitter: to spread political messages, reference candidate activities in the media or on the campaign trail or emphasize personal aspects. The methodological approach establishes three complementary areas: a) a quantitative analysis of the tweets published by the four candidates throughou…

No public value without a valued public

2017

This study aims to enlighten the controversial discussion about the term public value in an innovative way. Instead of normative pronouncements and paternalistic posits, this study combines a theoretical, literature-based conception with an empirical quantitative approach. For this, the key term, public value, is split into its constituent parts of customer value and citizen value and is transformed into measurable attributes. By means of a choice-based conjoint analysis on panel data for Germany and the United Kingdom, we explore which performance attributes of public service broadcasters are the most important. Based on the results, we create a conception of public value from the perspect…

Discussing Wartime Collaboration in a Transnational Digital Space: The Framing of the UPA and the Latvian Legion in Wikipedia

2017

Mārtiņs Kaprāns and Mykola Makhortykh examine how memory wars and memory truces occur in a transnational space of digital media. Examining how the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the Latvian Legion are represented on Wikipedia, the chapter discusses interactions between digital technology and the contentious memory of collaboration. To this end, it investigates the different framing strategies used to represent wartime memories in Wikipedia, the ways these strategies are developed by local editors’ communities, and the reception of Wikipedia’s representations of the past by national and transnational audiences. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the different forms of consensus used in…

Presence of think tanks in the Spanish digital press

2020

The study of think tanks in Spain has been growing in the last few years with an equally increasing number of social and grassroots movements. This article offers content analysis results from a selection of eight Spanish think tanks in the digital press during a seven-year period, adding new conclusions to previous literature for the same period. Not only does this research explore the appearance on the media, but also the type of mentions and authorship of the articles and blogs included in the digital press, contributing to a deeper study of think tanks. The objective of this study is to analyse the limited presence of Spanish think tanks in media outlets and whether their appearance is …

The present study inten…

The Book Between Media Convergence, Media Specificity, and Diverse Reading Communities in Present-Day US Culture

2019

Drawing on empirical studies and statistical analyses of how digitization has restructured the American publishing industry during the last decade, Christoph Blasi considers the book’s current position in media culture from the perspective of book studies. He surveys the latest research on the development of print book production, on the market competition between printed books and e-books, and on the differences between screen and print reading. Noting that communication practices and circuits of book value creation have changed in the wake of digitization, Blasi also highlights the significant function that print books possess in the contemporary media ecology—both as part of transmedia s…
