A Clinical Comparison between the Gamma® and the Claufitt® Nails in Unstable Proximal Femoral Fractures

2007

Purpose To assess the differences that exist between two intramedullary osteosynthesis systems for the treatment of unstable proximal femoral fractures in an attempt to find out whether the use of an antirotation screw improves the final result. Materials and methods A retrospective study was carried out to analyze the plcement and clinical evolution of both intramedullary nailing systems (Gamma ® y Claufitt ® ). The patients’ medium-term functional status was evaluated and benchmarked against the characteristics of the population served by our University Hospital. A final database was obtained made up of 43 cases of Claufitt ® that met the criteria of our study. A functional assessment sys…

Intramedullary nailing vs. palmar locked plating for unstable dorsally comminuted distal radius fractures: A biomechanical study

2010

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to compare the stability of a 2.4 mm palmar locking compression plate and a new intramedullary nail-plate-hybrid Targon DR for dorsally comminuted distal radius fractures. Methods An extraarticular 10 mm dorsally open wedge osteotomy was created in 8 pairs of fresh frozen human radii to simulate an AO–A3-fracture. The fractures were stabilized using one of the fixation methods. The specimens were loaded axially with 200 N and dorsal-excentrically with 80 N. 2000 cycles of dynamic loading and axial loading-to-failure were performed. Findings Axial loading revealed that intramedullary osteosynthesis (Targon DR: 369 N/mm) was significantly ( p …

Palaeohistology and palaeopathology of an Aeolosaurini (Sauropoda: Titanosauria) from Morro do Cambambe (Upper Cretaceous, Brazil)

2021

A recent publication of fossil bones of titanosaurs assigned to Aeolosaurini from the Morro do Cambambe site (Mato Grosso state, Brazil, Upper Cretaceous) reported anomalous growth in some of them. Here, we present osteohistological sections of elements to understand not only the microstructure and growth of such bones, but also the nature of those anomalies. Among them, we selected one cervical and one mediumposterior dorsal rib, and a haemal arch. The primary bone of all specimens consisted of a variation of the fibrolamellar complex, with the inner cortex being rich in woven bone with dispersed longitudinal canals, while the outer cortex was parallel-fibred with rows of longitudinal cana…

Intramedullary spinal cord tumor presenting as the initial manifestation of metastatic colon cancer: case report and review of the literature

2007

Study design: Case reports and review of the literature. Objective: Intramedullary spinal cord metastases (ISCMs) are rare type of central nervous system (CNS) involvement of systemic malignant tumors. Since the advent of new neuroradiological techniques, their detection have become increasingly diagnosed in recent years and, although somewhat controversial, surgical treatment has been considered a valid option. Setting: Neurosurgical Clinic, Department of Clinic Neuroscience, University of Palermo, Italy. Method: The authors describe the case of a 61-year-old woman who was admitted presenting withprogres sive tetraplegia. Investigations revealed an intramedullary spinal cord lesion at the …

Complex and Differential Cytokeratin Profiles in Thymomas and Correlation with Normal Thymus

1997

Cytokeratins (CKs) are characterized by highly diverse expression patterns and thus serve as potent epithelial differentiation markers. We have studied 31 cases of thymomas (12 cortical, 2 predominantly cortical, 5 mixed, and 9 medullary type thymomas as well as 3 well-differentiated thymic carcinomas) and, for comparison, 15 normal thymi, for the presence of different CK polypeptides. Immunohistochemistry was performed on cryostat sections using the indirect immunoperoxidase method.

AN ULTRASTRUCTURAL STUDY OF THE RETINA IN HUMAN LATE INFANTILE NEUROAXONAL DYSTROPHY

1993

A case involving a girl who died at 11 years of age and who had developed normally until the age of 18 months, at which time further psychomotor maturation stopped and then regressed, is reported. The patient appeared hypotonic and showed loss of deep tendon reflexes, as well as bulbar signs and increasing immobility. Visual impairment resulted in blindness at the age of 7 years. Her disease was diagnosed as late infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (LINAD) after examination of sural nerve biopsy samples and after autopsy. Under electron microscopy, retinal axons were filled with tubulocisternal profiles and occasional large lamellar clefts close to or distant from synaptic complexes. These lesi…

Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma With Exon 2 p.L56M RET Variant: Clinical Particular Features in Two Patients

2018

RET (REarranged during Transfection) proto-oncogene variants are essential for the development of familial and sporadic forms of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The most frequent variants are usually located in exons 10, 11, and 13 through 16 of the RET gene. We report two cases of apparently sporadic MTC associated with the variant in exon 2 of RET gene. Patient 1, a 62-year old man who had undergone adrenalectomy for a 5 cm pheochromocytoma, was screened for type 2 multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN 2) which showed elevated basal and post-intravenous calcium gluconate calcitonin levels. A fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) confirmed the suspicion of MTC. The patient underwent total th…

Zur Frage des Vorkommens von Isopropylnoradrenalin in Herz und Nebenniere

1959

1. Extracts of adrenal glands and heart tissue of the cat were prepared and chromatographed on paper. The regions corresponding to the RF values of noradrenaline, adrenaline and isoprenaline (isopropylnoradrenaline) were eluted. The eluates were assayed on the blood pressure, the isolated auricle and the isolated uterus of the rat. Differential assay on these preparations proved to be specific and extremely sensitive for isoprenaline. 2. There was no evidence for the occurrence of isoprenaline in the adrenal medulla or the heart of the cat. The method used is sufficiently sensitive to detect 0,2% of isoprenaline in the total catechol amines of the heart and 0,007% in the adrenals.
