Indoor artificial lighting: Prediction of the circadian effects of different spectral power distributions.

The study presented in this paper aims to evaluate if and how the environment affects the circadian impact of a light source by predicting circadian stimulus (CS) resulting from the exposure to different light scenes, using equations reported in studies by Rea et al. The main findings are: (1) Above 600 lx at eye level the increase of CS is little; (2) Between 50 lx and 200 lx at the eye level an increase of only 50 lx determines a significant increase of CS; (3) Light sources with correlated colour temperatures between 2900 K and 4200 K have similar impacts on the circadian system according to the calculation method used; (4) Even an almost neutral environment affects the circadian impact…

Reaction of melatonin with lipoperoxyl radicals in phospholipid bilayers.

Melatonin, at 5 to 500 microM was incorporated in unilamellar soybean phosphatidylcholine (PC) liposomes, the peroxidation of which was induced by 2,2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane-hydrochloride) (AAPH), and measured as production of conjugated diene lipid hydroperoxides. Concentration as low as 5 and 10 microM were poorly effective in reducing lipid peroxidation. Melatonin at 30 to 500 microM caused short inhibition periods, increasing with, but not linearly related to concentration, with a concurrent net decrease of the propagation rate. Effect of oxidative stress on UDP-glucuronosyltransferases in rat astrocytes.

UGT1A6 and UGT1A7 expression and enzymatic activities toward the 1-naphthol were analyzed in rat cultured astrocytes following the exposure for 48 h to redox-cycling xenobiotic compounds such as quinones and bipyridinium ions. Melatonin: Structural characterization of its non-enzymatic mono-oxygenate metabolite

Oxidation of melatonin by Fenton reagents as well as with hypochlorous acid or oxoferryl hemoglobin has been investigated. Analysis of products by low resolution/mass spectra (MS), high resolution/MS, 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C-NMR, correlated spectroscopy (COSY) and heterocorrelated spectroscopy (HETCOR) 2D NMR reveals the formation of a single mono-oxygenated product under all conditions and unequivocally assigns the N-[2-(5-methoxy-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indol-3-yl)-ethyl]-acetamide structure, which had not been previously considered.

Chemical sympathectomy and clorgyline-induced stimulation of rat pineal melatonin synthesis

The response to administration of the specific monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) blocker clorgyline was investigated in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats which were sympathectomized by injection of the false neurotransmitter 6-hydroxydopamine as newborns. Therefore, one hour of standardized exposure LED light at different intensities and the spectral composition during the post-awakening phase at 7:30 were compared.
