Prediction of unfavorable outcomes in West Nile virus neuroinvasive infection - Result of a multinational ID-IRI study
2019
Background: WNV causes 1.4% of all central nervous system infections and is the most common cause of epidemic neuro-invasive disease in humans. Objectives: Our main objective was to investigate retrospectively West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease (WNND) cases hospitalized during 2010–2017 and identified factors that can influence prognosis. Study design: We documented the demographic, epidemiologic, clinical and laboratory data of WNND and identified factors that can influence prognosis. The data were recruited through Infectious Diseases International Research Initiative (ID-IRI), which serves as a network for clinical researches. Results: We investigated 165 patients with WNND in 10 coun…
Viral encephalitis in Parry-Romberg syndrome
2019
A 28-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic for acute onset of headache, aphasia and confusion, followed by a first episode of generalised tonic–clonic seizures. She had a history of left-sided migraine, accompanied by visual aura and right arm dysesthesia since the age of 20 years and
Interferon-γ-Driven iNOS: A Molecular Pathway to Terminal Shock in Arenavirus Hemorrhagic Fever
2017
Arenaviruses such as Lassa virus (LASV) cause hemorrhagic fever. Terminal shock is associated with a systemic cytokine storm, but the mechanisms are ill defined. Here we used HLA-A2-expressing mice infected with a monkey-pathogenic strain of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV-WE), a close relative of LASV, to investigate the pathophysiology of arenavirus hemorrhagic fever (AHF). AHF manifested as pleural effusions, edematous skin swelling, and serum albumin loss, culminating in hypovolemic shock. A characteristic cytokine storm included numerous pro-inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide (NO) metabolites. Edema formation and terminal shock were abrogated in mice lacking inducible nit…
Virología: diagnóstico sindrómico de meningitis y encefalitis
2020
Viral infections of the nervous system represent a major health problem. It is estimated that the incidence of viral meningitis in the general population ranges from 5-17 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per year in developed countries. This heading encompasses highly varied clinical pictures, ranging from meningitis to encephalitis. This article presents the agents involved in our environment and discusses their expressiveness. In immunocompetent patients, the course of these infections is usually benign. Nucleic acid amplification techniques are the gold standard for their etiological diagnosis. The introduction of polymerase chain reaction and serological diagnosis of the main arboviruses h…
The BioFireFilmArray enables point of care diagnostic in neonatal parechovirus meningitis.
2017
Sir,We read with great interest a report in the present journal on the application of broad-range PCR combined with DNA sequencing for detection of bacteria in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) [1]. This m...
Hypertrophic pachymeningitis and cerebral venous thrombosis in myeloperoxidase-ANCA associated vasculitis
2019
Hypertrophic pachymeningitis (HP) is a circumscribed inflammatory process that thickens meninges with fibrous adhesions. Among the causes of HP, vasculitis and autoimmune disease should be considered; myeloperoxidase (MPO)-antinuclear cytoplasmatic antibodies (ANCA)-positivity can be the only
Postpartum listeria meningitis
2020
Highlights • Listeria monocytogenes is a rare cause of meningitis in immunocompetent patient. • Pregnancy and puerperium are accompanied by a decrease in cellular immunity. • Pregnancy and puerperium should be considered as risk factors for invasive listeriosis.
2019
Abstract Type B Coxsackieviruses (CVBs) are a common cause of acute and chronic myocarditis, dilated cardiomyopathy and aseptic meningitis. However, no CVB-vaccines are available for human use. We have previously produced virus-like particles (VLPs) for CVB3 with a baculovirus-insect cell production system. Here we have explored the potential of a VLP-based vaccine targeting CVB1 and describe the production of CVB1-VLPs with a scalable VLP purification method. The developed purification method consisting of tangential flow filtration and ion exchange chromatography is compatible with industrial scale production. CVB1-VLP vaccine was treated with UV-C or formalin to study whether stability a…
Cocirculation of Hajj and non-Hajj strains among serogroup W meningococci in Italy, 2000 to 2016
2019
In Italy, B and C are the predominant serogroups among meningococci causing invasive diseases. Nevertheless, in the period from 2013 to 2016, an increase in serogroup W Neisseria meningitidis (MenW) was observed. This study intends to define the main characteristics of 63 MenW isolates responsible of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in Italy from 2000 to 2016. We performed whole genome sequencing on bacterial isolates or single gene sequencing on culture-negative samples to evaluate molecular heterogeneity. Our main finding was the cocirculation of the Hajj and the South American sublineages belonging to MenW/clonal complex (cc)11, which gradually surpassed the MenW/cc22 in Italy. All M…
Early warning climate indices for malaria and meningitis in tropical ecological zones
2020
AbstractThis study aims at assessing the impacts of climate indices on the spatiotemporal distribution of malaria and meningitis in Nigeria. The primary focus of the research is to develop an Early Warning System (EWS) for assessing climate variability implications on malaria and meningitis spread in the study area. Both climate and health data were used in the study to determine the relationship between climate variability and the occurrence of malaria and meningitis. The assessment was based on variations in different ecological zones in Nigeria. Two specific sample locations were randomly selected in each ecological zone for the analysis. The climatic data used in this study are dekadal …
