Anti‐Toxoplasma activity and chemical compositions of aquatic extract of Mentha pulegium L. and Rubus idaeus L.: An in vitro study

Abstract This study aimed to determine the chemical compositions of crude aquatic extracts of M. pulegium L. and R. idaeus L., and their anti‐Toxoplasma activity. Crude aquatic extraction of aerial parts of R. idaeus L. and M. pulegium L. was performed. GC‐MS and HTPLC analyses were carried out. MTT assay was performed on Vero cells treated by different concentrations (Log −10 from 10−1 to 10−6) of the extracts. The present study consisted in evaluating the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective properties of ethanolic extracts from three mint species (Mentha spicata L. (MS), Mentha pulegium L. (MP) and Mentha rotundifolia (L.) Huds (MR)) with biochemical methods on murine RAW 264.7 macrophages (a transformed macrophage cell line isolated from ascites of BALB/c mice infected by the Abelson leukemia virus). The total phenolic, flavonoid and carotenoid contents were determined with spectrophotometric methods. Determination of alcohols in essential oils by liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection after chromogenic derivatization

Abstract An HPLC-UV method to determine compounds having a hydroxyl functional group in plant essential oils is developed. The sample is diluted with 1,4-dioxane and the analytes are derivatized with phthalic anhydride. The derivatives (phthalates hemiesters) are separated on a C8 column using an acetonitrile (ACN)/water gradient. Separation conditions were optimized using the DryLab® method development software. For the alcohols and phenols present in mint and rose essential oils, optimization led to a ca. 40 min gradient time and a column temperature of 8 °C. Halloysite nanotubes loaded with peppermint essential oil as filler for functional biopolymer film

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to show how a functional bionanocomposite film with both antioxidant and antimicrobial activities was successfully prepared by the filling of a pectin matrix with modified Halloysite nanotubes (HNT) containing the essential peppermint oil (PO). Expression of spearmint limonene synthase in transgenic spike lavender results in an altered monoterpene composition in developing leaves.

We generated transgenic spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) plants constitutively expressing the limonene synthase (LS) gene from spearmint (Mentha spicata), encoding the LS enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of limonene from geranyl diphosphate. Overexpression of the LS transgene did not consistently affect monoterpene profile in pooled leaves or flowers from transgenic T(0) plants. Analyses from cohorts of leaves sampled at different developmental stages showed that essential oil accumulation in transgenic and control plants was higher in developing than in mature leaves. Analysis of the Essential Oil of the So-called“Mentha mirennae”Bruno by GC and GC/MS

ABSTRACT The essential oil of “Mentha mirennae” Bruno was analyzed by a combination of GC, GC/MS and 13C-NMR. It was found to contain more than 50 components of which about 40 (96%) were identified. The major compounds were linalool (70%), linalyl acetate (9.8%) and limonene (1.5%). From a comparison with the main constituents found in different Mentha oils, we presume that “M. mirennae” must be the hybrid M. citrata Ehrl. However, according to botanical and chemical data the possibility that “M. mirennae” is, in fact, M. spicata L. cannot be excluded.

Pharmacological properties of the methanol extract from Mentha suaveolens Ehrh.

The present study analyses the pharmacological activity in in vivo and in vitro models of the methanol extract obtained from the leaves and steams of Menta suaveolens Ehrh. This extract lacked toxicity, but exhibited a central nervous system depressant action; an analgesic effect in models of chemical and mechanical stimulation suggesting the induction of a peripheral analgesic response. The extract also exhibited an antiinflammatory action inhibiting the rat paw oedema induced by carrageenin. Moreover, the in vitro studies showed a significant diminution in the contractile effects induced by histamine, serotonin and acetylcholine.

Cardiovascular effects of the methanol and dichloromethanol extracts fromMentha suaveolensEhrh.

Methanol and dichloromethanol extracts of the leaves and stems of Mentha suaveolens Ehrh. have been tested for their effects on resting arterial blood pressure, heart rate and noradrenaline induced hypertension. Both extracts administered by i.v. bolus to urethane anaesthetized normotensive rats reduced the mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate, while only the dichloromethanol extract prevented the noradrenaline induced hypertension.
