Contribution of Augmented Reality to Minimally Invasive Computer-Assisted Cranial Base Surgery.

2019

Cranial base procedures involve manipulation of small, delicate and complex structures in the fields of otology, rhinology, neurosurgery and maxillofacial surgery. Critical nerves and blood vessels are in close proximity of these structures. Augmented reality is an emerging technology that can revolutionize the cranial base procedures by providing supplementary anatomical and navigational information unified on a single display. However, the awareness and acceptance of possibilities of augmented reality systems in cranial base domain is fairly low. This article aims at evaluating the usefulness of augmented reality systems in cranial base surgeries and highlights the challenges that current…

Smartphone Usage Among Millennial in Finland and Implications for Marketing Segmentation Strategies: Lessons for Nigeria

2018

The study examines smart phone usage by millennials based on different criteria of operating system, Wi-Fi, text messaging, internet surfing and social media. The study used quantitative methodology and data were gathered with online questionnaires with 391 young smartphone users in Finland. The Millennial were clustered into five levels. The results reveal the prominent status of profiling in a developed market and how marketers in emerging markets can apply segmentation and targeting strategies using instant messaging, text messages, email, mobile app, gamification and social media based on the profile of each segment. Nigerian policy makers should adopt a framework to make smartphone aff…

Parental psychological control, autonomy support and Italian emerging adult’s psychosocial well-being: a cluster analytic approach

2020

According to a person-oriented approach, the study was addressed to inquire the existence of different groups of emerging adults (EAs) each characterized by distinct configurations of parental psychological control and autonomy support conceptualized in terms of promotion of volitional functioning (PVF) and in terms promotion of independence (PI). At the study participated 476 Italian undergraduate students following the academic track in several south Italian universities. Results showed the existence of four profiles: 1. the Moderate Volitional Dependence cluster; 2. the Moderate Controlling Independence cluster; 3. the Volitional Independence cluster; 4. the Controlling Dependence cluste…

Career pursuit pathways among emerging adult men and women : Psychosocial correlates and precursors

2014

The present study examined career pursuit pathways in 100 Israeli emerging adults (54 men) who were followed from age 22 to 29. Employing a semi-structured interview at the age of 29, participants were asked about current work and educational status, work and educational goals and status changes in recent years, and to reflect on the meaning of the processes they followed. Analyses of interviews yielded four distinctive career pursuit pathways that were associated with different levels of concurrent well-being: Consistent Pursuit, Adapted Pursuit, Survivors, and Confused/Vague. Self-criticism, efficacy, and level of motivation measured seven years earlier predicted pathway affiliation at 2…

The Responsible University in Southeast Asia : A Tale of the Transition from an Elite to a Mass Higher Education System

2019

AbstractAs is the case in the Nordic countries, universities in Southeast Asia are expected to act in a responsible manner by fostering greater participation in higher education across different social groups and by promoting regional development. To date, however, few studies have investigated such important aspects within the context of emerging economies undergoing considerable political, social and economic changes. Our study setting is Indonesia, a country with large socio-economic asymmetries that is undergoing the historical transition from an elite to a mass higher education system. The chapter provides evidence of the roles played by different types of universities located in speci…

Italian and Spanish Students’ Perception on Use of Technology in Classrooms of Classics in Secondary School

2019

A society that is becoming increasingly digital must explore new ways of learning. In fact, digital technologies have an impact on the education through the development of more flexible learning environments adapted to the needs of a high-mobility society. To prepare future citizens to the needs of the digital labor market, recent educational reforms in Italy and Spain focused their attention on students’ Digital Competences. Therefore, we are interested in probing how students of classical studies in Italian and Spanish high schools perceive the use of new technologies in the classroom. It is important to investigate classics at school, because traditionally this program is perceived as le…

Implications of Timing of Entering Adulthood for Identity Achievement

2007

Five external markers of adulthood, self-perceived adulthood at age 27, and identity achievement at ages 27, 36, and 42 were explored for 95 women and 94 men in a cohort of Finns born in 1959. Earlier transition to adulthood in family life (moving from the parental home, entering marriage or cohabitation, having a child) anticipated higher identity achievement in adulthood. However, later transition to adulthood in working life, composed of the first certification conferral, and entering a full-time job were associated with higher identity achievement. Both components correlated with the higher level and thus the length of education. Self-perceived adulthood was unrelated to the age of ach…

The impact of communicating digital technologies: How information and communication technology journalists conceptualize their influence on the audie…

2012

Information technology is ever-changing. Information and communication technology (ICT) journalists play a significant part in diffusing, explaining and interpreting these new technologies and in forging the societal understanding of future trends, influencing both their audience and the developers they cover. They are important gatekeepers and their coverage is – most likely – decisive for the success or failure of new products. To explore this function of ICT journalism, an online survey of 102 ICT journalists in Germany was conducted, including 32 journalists in managing roles. This study focuses on two research questions: (a) how do ICT journalists perceive their relationship to and the…

Defining user experience goals to guide the design of industrial systems

2015

The key prerequisite for experience-driven design is to define what experience to design for. User experience (UX) goals concretise the intended experience. Based on our own case studies from industrial environments and a literature study, we propose five different approaches to acquiring insight and inspiration for UX goal setting: Brand, Theory, Empathy, Technology, and Vision. Each approach brings in a different viewpoint, thus supporting the multidisciplinary character of UX. The Brand approach ensures that the UX goals are in line with the company's brand promise. The Theory approach utilises the available scientific knowledge of human behaviour. The Empathy approach focuses on knowing…

Immobilised Humic Substances as Low-Cost Sorbents for Emerging Contaminants

2021

Environmental pollution with contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) is a worldwide problem that is receiving increasing attention. Although these substances have been released in the aquatic environment for a long time, wastewater treatment plants are still incapable of removing emerging contaminants completely. Consequently, trace metals, metalloids and pharmaceuticals, as well as surfactant leftovers, are often found in environmental samples. Environmentally friendly and cost-effective sorbents such as humic substances can be used for purification if their sorption properties are increased by immobilization. To our knowledge, immobilized humic substances have not been widely studied as s…
