Validity of needle core biopsy in the histological characterisation of mammary lesions

2006

Summary Over the last few years, there has been an enormous increase in the use of needle core biopsy (CB) for the histopathological characterisation of suspect lesions of the breast. The aim of this study was to verify the diagnostic reliability of CB by comparing the histological results obtained with the use of this technique with those obtained from the whole of the surgically resected specimen. We studied 198 out of 426 patients with clinically and/or radiologically suspect breast lesions. We found correspondence between the histological examination of the whole of the excised specimen and that of the CB in 94.9% of the cases of infiltrating carcinoma and in 71.4% of those involving du…

Accuracy of blood transfusion in postpartum hemorrhage to assess maternal morbidity.

2012

International audience; OBJECTIVE: To measure the accuracy of blood transfusion (timing and number of blood units) in postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in a perinatal network. STUDY DESIGN: (1) The ANONYMAT software system was used for anonymization and linkage of two large stand-alone databases, the Burgundy Perinatal Network (BPN) and the National Blood Centre (EFS) databases, which contain, respectively, clinical data from hospital discharges and information concerning any blood transfusion in France (considered as the gold standard database for identifying any transfusion). (2) Identification of prescriptions of at least one red blood cell (RBC) unit at the day of delivery (≥22 weeks) and up …

Disease expression in women with hereditary angioedema

2008

Udgivelsesdato: 2008-Jun-11 OBJECTIVE: Fluctuations in sex hormones can trigger angioedema attacks in women with hereditary angioedema. Combined oral contraceptive therapies, as well as pregnancy, can induce severe attacks. The course of angioedema may be very variable in different women. STUDY DESIGN: Within the PREHAEAT project launched by the European Union, data on 150 postpubertal women with hereditary angioedema were collected in 8 countries, using a patient-based questionnaire. RESULTS: Puberty worsened the disease for 62%. Combined oral contraceptives worsened the disease for 79%, whereas progestogen-only pills improved it for 64%. During pregnancies, 38% of women had more attacks, …

Clinical guidelines for diagnosing and managing ocular manifestations in children with mucopolysaccharidosis.

2011

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare lysosomal storage disorders characterized by the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in several tissues and organs. This accumulation results in an array of clinical manifestations and premature death in severe cases. Ocular problems are very common in children with MPS and may involve the cornea, sclera, trabecular meshwork, retina, optic nerve and also the posterior visual pathways. The aims of this study are to give an overview of ocular problems in MPS and to provide clinical guidelines for paediatric ophthalmologists for early diagnosis and management of ocular manifestations in children with MPS. Diagnostic problems may arise in child…

Potentially inappropriate prescribing in institutionalised older patients in Spain: the STOPP-START criteria compared with the Beers criteria

2011

Objective: The aims of this study were to identify potentially inappropriate prescribing using the Beers and STOPP criteria. The START criteria were applied to detect prescription omission in the geriatric population. We compared the utility of these criteria in institutionalised older people. Methods: Descriptive study reviewing the medication and clinical records of 81 residents (aged 65 years and more) by pharmacists in a nursing home in the Lleida region (Spain). Results: The mean patients´ age was 84 (SD=8) years, with an average of 5 drugs per resident (total prescriptions: 416 medicines). The Beers criteria identified potentially inappropriate medication use in 25% of patients and 48…

Early patterns of electrical activity in the developing cerebral cortex of humans and rodents.

2006

International audience; During prenatal and early postnatal development, the cerebral cortex exhibits synchronized oscillatory network activity that is believed to be essential for the generation of neuronal cortical circuits. The nature and functional role of these early activity patterns are of central interest in neuroscience. Much of the research is performed in rodents and in vitro, but how closely do these model systems relate to the human fetal brain? In this review, we compare observations in humans with in vivo and in vitro rodent data, focusing on particular oscillatory activity patterns that share many common features: delta brushes, spindle bursts and spindle-like oscillations. …

General Relativistic Simulations of Accretion Disks Around Tilted Kerr Black Holes

2014

We simulate the dynamics of self-gravitating accretion disks around tilted Kerr black holes (BH) in full 3D general relativity. For this purpose we employ the EinsteinToolkit, using the thorn McLachlan for the evolution of the spacetime via the BSSN formalism of the Einstein equations and the thorn GRHydro for the evolution of the hydrodynamics, using a 3D Cartesian mesh with adaptive mesh refinement. We investigate the effects of the tilt angle between the disk angular momentum and BH spin vector on the dynamics of these systems as the disk evolves in the tilted spacetime. By evolving the spacetime and matter fields, we are able to observe how both BH and disk react and evolve in the tilte…

ASOHF: a new adaptive spherical overdensity halo finder

2010

We present and test a new halo finder based on the spherical overdensity (SO) method. This new adaptive spherical overdensity halo finder (ASOHF) is able to identify dark matter haloes and their substructures (subhaloes) down to the scales allowed by the analysed simulations. The code has been especially designed for the adaptive mesh refinement cosmological codes, although it can be used as a stand-alone halo finder for N-body codes. It has been optimised for the purpose of building the merger tree of the haloes. In order to verify the viability of this new tool, we have developed a set of bed tests that allows us to estimate the performance of the finder. Finally, we apply the halo finder…

Galaxy cluster mergers

2009

We present the results of an Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamical and N-body simulation in a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. The simulation incorporates common cooling and heating processes for primordial gas. A specific halo finder has been designed and applied in order to extract a sample of galaxy clusters directly obtained from the simulation without considering any resimulating scheme. We have studied the evolutionary history of the cluster halos, and classified them into three categories depending on the merger events they have undergone: major mergers, minor mergers, and relaxed clusters. The main properties of each one of these classes and the differences among them are di…
