Driving spin chirality by electron dynamics in laser-excited antiferromagnets

2020

Optical generation of complex spin textures is one of the most exciting challenges of modern spintronics. Here, we uncover a distinct physical mechanism for imprinting spin chirality into collinear magnets with short laser pulses. By simultaneously treating the laser-ignited evolution of electronic structure and magnetic order, we show that their intertwined dynamics can result in an emergence of quasi-stable chiral states. We find that laser-driven chirality does not require any auxiliary external fields or intrinsic spin-orbit interaction to exist, and it can survive on the time scale of nanoseconds even in the presence of thermal fluctuations, which makes the uncovered mechanism relevant…

Strain sensing with sub-micron sized Al-AlOx-Al tunnel junctions

2009

We demonstrate a local strain sensing method for nanostructures based on metallic Al tunnel junctions with AlOx barriers. The junctions were fabricated on top of a thin silicon nitride membrane, which was actuated with an AFM tip attached to a stiff cantilever. A large relative change in the tunneling resistance in response to the applied strain (gauge factor) was observed, up to a value 37. This facilitates local static strain variation measurements down to ~10^{-7}.

Infrared nanospectroscopic mapping of DNA molecules on mica surface

2022

Significant efforts have been done in last two decades to develop nanoscale spectroscopy techniques owning to their great potential for single-molecule structural detection and in addition, to resolve open questions in heterogeneous biological systems, such as protein-DNA complexes. Applying AFM-IR technique has become a powerful leverage for obtaining simultaneous absorption spectra with a nanoscale spatial resolution for studied proteins, however the IR-AFM investigation of DNA molecules on surface, as a benchmark for a nucleoprotein complexes nanocharacterization, has remained elusive. Herein, we demonstrate methodological approach for acquisition of IR-AFM mapping modalities with corres…

Exact canonical occupation numbers in a Fermi gas with finite level spacing and a q-analog of Fermi-Dirac distribution

2011

We consider equilibrium level occupation numbers in a Fermi gas with a fixed number of particles, n, and finite level spacing. Using the method of generating functions and the cumulant expansion we derive a recurrence relation for canonical partition function and an explicit formula for occupation numbers in terms of single-particle partition function at n different temperatures. We apply this result to a model with equidistant non-degenerate spectrum and obtain close-form expressions in terms of q-polynomials and Rogers-Ramanujan partial theta function. Deviations from the standard Fermi-Dirac distribution can be interpreted in terms of a gap in the chemical potential between the particle …

Controlling thermal conductance using three-dimensional phononic crystals

2021

Controlling thermal transport at the nanoscale is vital for many applications. Previously, it has been shown that this control can be achieved with periodically nanostructured two-dimensional phononic crystals for the case of suspended devices. Here, we show that thermal conductance can also be controlled with three-dimensional phononic crystals, allowing the engineering of the thermal contact of more varied devices without the need for suspension in the future. We show the experimental results obtained at sub-Kelvin temperatures for two different period three-dimensional crystals and for a bulk control structure. The results show that the conductance can be enhanced with the phononic cryst…

Sub- to Super-Poissonian crossover of current noise in helical edge states coupled to a spin impurity in a magnetic field

2021

Edge states of two-dimensional topological insulators are helical and single-particle backscattering is prohibited by time-reversal symmetry. In this work, we show that an isotropic exchange coupling of helical edge states (HES) to a spin 1/2 impurity subjected to a magnetic field results in characteristic backscattering current noise (BCN) as a function of bias voltage and tilt angle between the direction of the magnetic field and the quantization axis of the HES. In particular, we find transitions from sub-Poissonian (antibunching) to super-Poissonian (bunching) behavior as a direct consequence of the helicity of the edge state electrons. We use the method of full counting statistics with…

Accurate calculation of the transverse anisotropy in perpendicularly magnetized multilayers

2015

The transverse anisotropy constant and the related D\"oring mass density are key parameters of the one-dimensional model to describe the motion of magnetic domain walls. So far, no general framework is available to determine these quantities from static characterizations such as magnetometry measurements. Here, we derive a universal analytical expression to calculate the transverse anisotropy constant for the important class of perpendicular magnetic multilayers. All the required input parameters of the model, such as the number of repeats, the thickness of a single magnetic layer, and the layer periodicity, as well as the effective perpendicular anisotropy, the saturation magnetization, an…

Emission of coherent THz magnons in an antiferromagnetic insulator triggered by ultrafast spin-phonon interactions

2022

Antiferromagnetic materials have been proposed as new types of narrowband THz spintronic devices owing to their ultrafast spin dynamics. Manipulating coherently their spin dynamics, however, remains a key challenge that is envisioned to be accomplished by spin-orbit torques or direct optical excitations. Here, we demonstrate the combined generation of broadband THz (incoherent) magnons and narrowband (coherent) magnons at 1 THz in low damping thin films of NiO/Pt. We evidence, experimentally and through modelling, two excitation processes of magnetization dynamics in NiO, an off-resonant instantaneous optical spin torque and a strain-wave-induced THz torque induced by ultrafast Pt excitatio…

The chiral Hall effect of magnetic skyrmions from a cyclic cohomology approach

2019

We demonstrate the emergence of an anomalous Hall effect in chiral magnetic textures which is neither proportional to the net magnetization nor to the well-known emergent magnetic field that is responsible for the topological Hall effect. Instead, it appears already at linear order in the gradients of the magnetization texture and exists for one-dimensional magnetic textures such as domain walls and spin spirals. It receives a natural interpretation in the language of Alain Connes' noncommutative geometry. We show that this chiral Hall effect resembles the familiar topological Hall effect in essential properties while its phenomenology is distinctly different. Our findings make the re-inter…

Simple exchange-correlation potential with a proper long-range behavior for low-dimensional nanostructures

2010

The exchange-correlation potentials stemming from the local-density approximation and several generalized-gradient approximations are known to have incorrect asymptotic decay. This failure is independent of the dimensionality, but so far the problem has been corrected -- within the mentioned approximations -- only in three dimensions. Here we provide a cured exchange-correlation potential in two dimensions, where the applications have a continuously increasing range in, e.g., semiconductor physics. The given potential is a generalized-gradient approximation, which is as easy to apply as the local-density approximation. We demonstrate that the corrected potential agrees very well with the an…
