Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is an energy efficient and environmentally "friendly" welding process. The parts are welded together in a solid-state joining process at a temperature below the melting point of the workpiece material under a combination of extruding and forging. This technology has been successfully used to join materials that are difficult-to-weld or ‘unweldable’ by fusion welding methods. 3D finite element analysis of tool wear in machining

Abstract The paper is focused on the 3D numerical prediction of tool wear in metal cutting operations. In particular, an analytical model, able to take into account the diffusive wear mechanism, was implemented through a specific subroutine. Furthermore, an advanced approach to model heat transfer phenomena at the tool–chip interface was included in the numerical simulation. The adopted simulation strategy gave the possibility to properly evaluate the tool wear. The 3D FEM results were compared with some experimental data obtained turning AISI 1045 steel using uncoated WC tool; a good agreement was found out.
Fatigue crack growth behaviour of four structural steels in air and in a geothermal fluid environment

Abstract In recent years the exploitation of geothermal energy has expanded rapidly in Italy. This has created a requirement for improved drilling technology, to reduce the number of failures occuring in the drills, which is more frequent than in oil wells. This paper deals with the results obtained in FCCR tests of four materials both in air and in two types of aggressive environments. Deterioration takes place by fatigue, corrosion fatigue and hydrogen embrittlement. It is concluded that the steel G105 is a suitable substitute for S135 in drill pipes, and inspections between drillings may be adequate to prevent failure for small-curvature wells.

Abstract A method of theoretical and experimental investigations of large deformations and load capacity of pressure vessels has been proposed. Algorithms and programs for numerical analysis (with the finite element method) of spatial stress and strain state and load capacity have been worked out according to the Prandtl-Reuss theory of plastic flow. Loading in the vessel was realized in an incremental way. The loading process was continued up to the moment when the maximum loading was obtained (i.e. the moment when state of equilibrium of the vessel was not possible). Abstract It is economically important for manufacturers of high-temperature machines to be able to measure creep so that they can predict residual service life more accurately. This paper describes and refines an image analysis method for evaluating creep in laboratory test pieces. It is a preliminary study of how to extract relevant information for creep measurement by cavities counting. Friction Stir Welding Lap Joint Resistance Optimization Through Gradient Techniques

In recent years, scientific interest on friction stir welding (FSW) has grown more and more since such a joining technique allows one to weld lightweight alloys that are rather difficult to weld or even “unweldable” with the classic fusion welding operations. Furthermore, few industrial applications of the process are already known in different manufacturing fields. In this paper, the optimization problem of a FSW lap joint for automotive applications is investigated, taking into account process parameters such as the tool rotating speed and the tool feed rate; a numerical gradient technique is applied for the optimization procedure reducing the number of experimental tests to be developed.
Friction stir welding: a solid state joining process

A wide experimental investigation on the friction stir welding of AA6082-T6 sheets is presented. In particular the influence of some of the most relevant process parameters was taken into account, with the aim to maximize the joint strength; furthermore the joint fatigue behavior was considered too. An accurate analysis on the obtained parts was carried out, with particular attention to the material microstructure evolution. The obtained results permitted to develop a proper FSW process engineering.

The Bioshale Project: Search for a Sustainable Way of Exploiting Black Shale Ores Using Biotechnology

The Bioshale project, involving 13 partners throughout Europe, is co-funded by the European Commission under the FP6 program. The main objective of this project (which started in October 2004) is to identify and develop innovative biotechnological processes for ‘’eco-efficient’’ exploitation of metal-rich, black shale ores. Three extensive deposits have been selected for R&D actions.
