Prognostic Relevance of CCN3 in Bone Sarcomas
2010
Osteosarcomas and Ewing’s sarcoma (EWS) are aggressive malignant bone tumors. In both cases, prognostic markers are lacking. Presently, only clinical features are widely accepted as prognostic indicators. In this study we assessed the prognostic value of CCN3 (Nov), a matricellular protein that belong to the CCN family of regulatory proteins, whose members were shown to play crucial roles in bone formation. In osteosarcomas, CCN3 expression levels represent a useful tool to early identification of patients with different prognosis. In both osteosarcomas and Ewing’s sarcomas, the expression of a full length CCN3 protein was associated to a worse prognostic and a higher risk to developing met…
Confronting blackface : Stancetaking in the Dutch Black Pete debate
2020
ecently, the Netherlands witnessed an agitated discussion over Black Pete, a blackface character associated with the Saint Nicholas festival. This paper analyzes a televised panel interview discussing a possible court ban of public Nicholas festivities, and demonstrates that participants not only disagree over the racist nature of the blackface character but also over the terms of the debate itself. Drawing on recent sociolinguistic work on stancetaking, it traces how panelists ‘laminate’ the interview’s participation framework by embedding their assessments of Black Pete in contrasting dialogical fields. Their stancetaking evokes opposing trajectories of earlier interactions and conjures u…
The prognostic role of tumor budding and tumor-stroma ratio in pulmonary metastasis of colorectal carcinoma
2023
Objective To evaluate the prognostic value of tumor budding and tumor-stroma ratio (TSR) in resected pulmonary metastases of colorectal carcinoma (CRC). Methods In total, 106 pulmonary metastasectomies were performed to 74 patients in two study hospitals during 2000–2020. All relevant clinical data were retrospectively collected. Tumor budding based on the International Tumor Budding Consensus Conference recommendations and TSR in the first resected pulmonary metastases and primary tumors were evaluated from diagnostic hematoxylin-eosin-stained histopathological slides. Results 60 patients (85.7%) had low tumor budding (≤5 buds/field) and 10 patients (14.3%) had high tumor budding (>5 buds/…
Kaulu metastāžu attīstības riska faktori un pretsāpju staru terapijas raksturojums krūts vēža pacientēm
2021
Krūts vēzis ir visbiežāk diagnosticētā vēža forma visā pasaulē un galvenais sieviešu vēža mirstības cēlonis. Regulārs krūts vēža skrīnings palīdz slimību diagnosticēt agrīnā stadijā, līdz ar to ir labāka prognoze slimības izārstēšanā. Kaulu metastāzes ir biežākā komplikācija krūts vēža pacientēm. Kaulu metastāzēm raksturīgas ir sāpes kaulos un patoloģiski kaulu lūzumi kaula arhitektonikas izmaiņu dēļ. Krūts vēža šūnas var izplatīties un metastazēties jebkuros kaulos. Visbiežāk metastāzes veidojas mugurkaula skriemeļos, gūžas kaulos, ribās un garajos kaulos. Lai atvieglotu sāpes kaulos, novērstu patoloģiskus kaulu lūzumus un izvairītos no muguras smadzeņu kompresijas krūts vēža pacientēm vei…
Physiotherapists’ perceptions of learning and implementing a biopsychosocial intervention to treat musculoskeletal pain conditions : a systematic rev…
2020
Clinical practice guidelines recommend a biopsychosocial approach for the management of musculoskeletal pain conditions, but physiotherapists have reported feeling inadequately trained and lacking in confidence to deal with psychosocial issues. Although a growing number of studies is exploring physiotherapists’ perceptions of biopsychosocial training, the results have not been synthesized. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review and metasynthesis of qualitative studies was to explore physiotherapists’ perceptions of learning and implementing a biopsychosocial intervention to treat musculoskeletal pain conditions. A search of the electronic databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, ERIC, Psyc…
Fabrication of DNA origami lattice on silicon surface for DNA-assisted lithography
2022
Metamaterials obtain new properties from having metallized nanoscale features that are often arranged in repeating patterns. In particular, there is a need to create metasurfaces with a negative refractive index. As nanoscale fabrication using conventional top-down methods can be both difficult and time-consuming, bottom-up techniques have gained growing interest. Especially, the DNA origami method can be utilized to assemble lattices with nanoscale features on 2D surfaces, which can then be metallized using DNA-assisted lithography (DALI). This thesis provides a full study of the DNA origami fishnet lattice assembly kinetics and optimization of lattice order on a silicon surface using liqu…
Reciprocal influence of B cells and tumor macro and microenvironments in the ApcMin/+ model of colorectal cancer
2017
One of the most fascinating aspects of the immune system is its dynamism, meant as the ability to change and readapt according to the organism needs. Following an insult, we assist to the spontaneous organization of different immune cells which cooperate, locally and at distance, to build up an appropriate response. Throughout tumor progression, adaptations within the systemic tumor environment, or macroenvironment, result in the promotion of tumor growth, tumor invasion and metastasis to distal organs, but also to dramatic changes in the activity and composition of the immune system. In this work, we show the changes of the B-cell arm of the immune system following tumor progression in the…
Complement Protein C1q Binds to Hyaluronic Acid in the Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Microenvironment and Promotes Tumor Growth
2017
C1q is the first recognition subcomponent of the complement classical pathway, which acts towards the clearance of pathogens and apoptotic cells. C1q is also known to modulate a range of functions of immune and non-immune cells, including their involvement in placental development and sensorial synaptic pruning. We have recently shown that C1q can promote tumour by encouraging their adhesion, migration and proliferation in addition to angiogenesis and metastasis. In this study, we have examined the role of C1q in the microenvironment of malignant pleuric mesothelioma (MPM), a rare form of cancer commonly associated with exposure to asbestos. We found that C1q was highly expressed in all MPM…
Bovine herpesvirus 4-based vector delivering the full length xCT DNA efficiently protects mice from mammary cancer metastases by targeting cancer ste…
2018
Despite marked advancements in its treatment, breast cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer death in women, due to relapses and distal metastases. Breast cancer stem cells (CSCs), are a cellular reservoir for recurrence, metastatic evolution and disease progression, making the development of novel therapeutics that target CSCs, and thereby inhibit metastases, an urgent need. We have previously demonstrated that the cystine-glutamate antiporter xCT (SLC7A11), a protein that was shown to be overexpressed in mammary CSCs and that plays a key role in the maintenance of their redox balance, self-renewal and resistance to chemotherapy, is a potential target for mammary cancer immunoth…
Blockade of MIF–CD74 Signalling on Macrophages and Dendritic Cells Restores the Antitumour Immune Response Against Metastatic Melanoma
2018
Mounting an effective immune response against cancer requires the activation of innate and adaptive immune cells. Metastatic melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer. While immunotherapies have shown a remarkable success in melanoma treatment, patients develop resistance by mechanisms that include the establishment of an immune suppressive tumor microenvironment. Thus, understanding how metastatic melanoma cells suppress the immune system is vital to develop effective immunotherapies against this disease. In this study, we find that macrophages (MOs) and dendritic cells (DCs) are suppressed in metastatic melanoma and that the Ig-CDR-based peptide C36L1 is able to restore MOs and …
