Zero-range model of traffic flow.

2005

A multi--cluster model of traffic flow is studied, in which the motion of cars is described by a stochastic master equation. Assuming that the escape rate from a cluster depends only on the cluster size, the dynamics of the model is directly mapped to the mathematically well-studied zero-range process. Knowledge of the asymptotic behaviour of the transition rates for large clusters allows us to apply an established criterion for phase separation in one-dimensional driven systems. The distribution over cluster sizes in our zero-range model is given by a one--step master equation in one dimension. It provides an approximate mean--field dynamics, which, however, leads to the exact stationary s…

Ageing of isotactic polypropylene due to morphology evolution, experimental limitations of realtime density measurements with a gradient column

2006

Abstract Ageing in crystalline polymers is responsible for the deterioration of physical properties leading, for example, to a decrease in toughness and to dimensional changes that are to some extent responsible for warpage and scrap production in injection molding. Since, it depends on the mutual transformation of stable and metastable phases, being always related to changes in morphological organization, it is here preferred to call it ‘Morphological ageing’. Although, one would expect the ageing regime to be determined by the complex morphology with amorphous phases of different mobility and eventually multiple crystalline phases, transformed into each other at an associated transition, …

Über die möglichkeiten zur bestimmung von mischungsenthalpien und -volumina aus der molekulargewichtsabhängigkeit der kritischen entmischungstemperat…

1977

Cloud-point curves and critical curves (Tc = f(p)) have been measured for the system trans-decahydronaphthalene/polystyrene and three different molecular weights of the polystyrene component (2,5 · 106; 3,9 · 105; 1,1 · 105). It turned out that by variation of the pressure the metastable region can be investigated up to the spinodal curve. A comparison of the theta-temperatures and the enthalpy contributions χH (to the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter χ) resulting from the measured critical temperatures according to Shultz-Flory, with the corresponding directly obtained literature data, demonstrates that, although the extrapolation of Tc to infinite molecular weight is feasible, χH obtai…

Mechanism of Antibacterial Activity via Morphology Change of α-AgVO3: Theoretical and Experimental Insights

2017

The electronic configuration, morphology, optical features, and antibacterial activity of metastable α-AgVO3 crystals have been discussed by a conciliation and association of the results acquired by experimental procedures and first-principles calculations. The α-AgVO3 powders were synthesized using a coprecipitation method at 10, 20, and 30 °C. By using a Wulff construction for all relevant low-index surfaces [(100), (010), (001), (110), (011), (101), and (111)], the fine-tuning of the desired morphologies can be achieved by controlling the values of the surface energies, thereby lending a microscopic understanding to the experimental results. The as-synthesized α-AgVO3 crystals display a …

Effect of internal noise on the relaxation time of an yttria stabilized zirconia-based memristor

2022

The effects of temperature on the switching kinetics of an yttrium-stabilized zirconia-based memristor from a low-resistance state to a high-resistance state have been experimentally investigated. It was found that the memristor relaxation time depends on the temperature in a non-monotonous way, with a maximum observed at the temperature close to 55 °C. This nonmonotonic behavior is a signature of the noise-enhanced stability phenomenon observed in all physical and complex systems characterized by metastable states.

Kinetically Controlled Stepwise Self-Assembly of AuI-Metallopeptides in Water

2018

The combination of attractive supramolecular interactions of a hydrophobic AuI-metallopeptide with the shielding effect of flexible oligoethylene glycol chains provides access to a stepwise self-assembly of a AuI-metalloamphiphile in water. Kinetic control of the supramolecular polymer morphology is achieved using a temperature-dependent assembly protocol, which yields low dispersity supramolecular polymers (metastable state I) or helical bundled nanorods (state II).

N ‐Annulated Perylene Bisimides to Bias the Differentiation of Metastable Supramolecular Assemblies into J‐ and H‐Aggregates

2020

The unique self-assembling features of N-annulated perylene bisimides (PBIs) 1 and 2 are reported. The stability of the aggregates of diester 1, in which no H-bonding interactions are operative, corroborates the significance of long-range van der Waals and dipole-dipole electrostatic interactions in the construction of stable supramolecular assemblies. The incorporation of amide functional groups within the N-annulated PBI in 2 stimulates pathway differentiation to achieve up to three J-type aggregates and a fourth H-type aggregate depending on the experimental conditions. The results presented demonstrate unprecedented levels of control over synthetic supramolecular self-assembly and the r…

Polymeric scaffolds prepared via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS): Tuning of structure and morphology

2007

Scaffolds suitable for tissue engineering applications were prepared by Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) starting from a ternary solution PLLA/dioxane/water. The experimental protocol consisted of three consecutive steps, a first quench from the homogeneous solution to an appropriate demixing temperature (within the metastable region), a holding stage for a given residence time and a final quench from the demixing temperature to a low temperature (within the unstable region). A large variety of morphologies, in terms of average pore size and interconnection, were obtained upon modifying the demixing time and temperature, owing to the interplay of nucleation and growth processes dur…

Liquid-liquid phase equilibria in polymer solutions and polymer mixtures

2002

The pressure dependence of liquid-liquid equilibria in weakly interacting binary macromolecular systems (homopolymer solutions and blends) will be discussed. The common origin of the separate high-temperature/low-temperature and high-pressure/low-pressure branches of demixing curves will be demonstrated by extending the study into the region of metastable liquid states including the undercooled, overheated and stretched states (i.e. states at negative pressures). The seemingly different response of the UCST-branch of solutions and blends when pressurized (pressure induced mixing for most polymer solutions, pressure induced demixing for most blends) will be explained in terms of the location…
