Face masks considerably reduce COVID-19 cases in Germany

2020

Significance Mitigating the spread of COVID-19 is the objective of most governments. It is of utmost importance to understand how effective various public health measures are. We study the effectiveness of face masks. We employ public regional data about reported severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infections for Germany. As face masks became mandatory at different points in time across German regions, we can compare the rise in infections in regions with masks and regions without masks. Weighing various estimates, we conclude that 20 d after becoming mandatory face masks have reduced the number of new infections by around 45%. As economic costs are close to zero compared to oth…

Ethically Researching Local Impacts of Environmental Change without Travel

2021

Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2020, included local and international travel restrictions alongside limits on face-to-face gatherings. These measures impinged on participatory research examining local impacts of environmental change. In response, many researchers adopted techniques that could be implemented without travel. This article explores some of the consequent research ethics issues.

High Biological Value Compounds Extraction from Citrus Waste with Non-Conventional Methods.

2020

Citrus fruits are extensively grown and much consumed around the world. Eighteen percent of total citrus cultivars are destined for industrial processes, and as a consequence, large amounts of waste are generated. Citrus waste is a potential source of high biological value compounds, which can be used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries but whose final disposal may pose a problem due to economic and environmental factors. At the same time, the emerging need to reduce the environmental impact of citrus waste and its responsible management has increased. For these reasons, the study of the use of non-conventional methods to extract high biological value compounds such as caro…

The Interactions between COVID-19 Cases in the USA, the VIX Index and Major Stock Markets

2021

With this study, we aimed to determine (1) the effect of the daily new cases and deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States on the CBOE volatility index (VIX index) and (2) the effect of the VIX index on the major stock markets during the early stage of the pandemic period. To do this, we collected and analysed the daily new cases and death numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic period in the United States and the country indexes of the USA (DJI), Germany (DAX), France (CAC40), England (FTSE100), Italy (MIB), China (SSEC) and Japan (Nikkei225) to determine the impact of the VIX index on the major stock markets. We then subjected this data to the Johansen co-integration test and …

Clinical utility of novel biosensing platform: Diagnosis of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 at point of care

2021

Early detection is the first step in the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Therefore, an efficient, rapid, selective, specific, and inexpensive SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic method is the need of the hour. The reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technology is massively utilized to detect infection with SARS-CoV-2. However, scientists continue to strive to create enhanced technology while continually developing nanomaterial-enabled biosensing methods that can provide new methodologies, potentially fulfilling the present demand for rapid and early identification of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Our review presents a summar…

The UK needs a sustainable strategy for COVID-19

2020

The UK is well into the second wave of COVID-19, with 60 051 lives lost to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection to date, according to provisional data from the Office for National Statistics. Official UK Government data show that cases have been rising exponentially since late August, 2020, with increases across all regions in England in recent weeks. As of Nov 4, 2020, the UK had 25 177 confirmed daily cases. These are almost certainly underestimates as between Oct 17 and Oct 23, 2020, England alone had 52 000 estimated daily cases.Estimates of the effective reproduction number in England vary between 1.1 and 1.6.Daily deaths have doubled every fortnight si…

Automorphisms of 2–dimensional right-angled Artin groups

2007

We study the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group AA in the case where the defining graph A is connected and triangle-free. We give an algebraic description of Out.AA/ in terms of maximal join subgraphs in A and prove that the Tits’ alternative holds for Out.AA/. We construct an analogue of outer space for Out.AA/ and prove that it is finite dimensional, contractible, and has a proper action of Out.AA/. We show that Out.AA/ has finite virtual cohomological dimension, give upper and lower bounds on this dimension and construct a spine for outer space realizing the most general upper bound. 20F36; 20F65, 20F28

Menstrual problems and lifestyle among Spanish university women

2020

Menstrual problems affect many young women worldwide, conditioning both their academic performance and quality of life. This study sought to analyse the prevalence of menstrual problems and their possible relationship with lifestyle among Spanish university women, as part of a research project (UniHcos Project) involving a cohort of 11 Spanish universities with 7208 university students. A descriptive analysis was performed using the bivariate chi-square test and the Student&rsquo

High Quality Reconstruction of Dynamic Objects using 2D-3D Camera Fusion

2017

International audience; In this paper, we propose a complete pipeline for high quality reconstruction of dynamic objects using 2D-3D camera setup attached to a moving vehicle. Starting from the segmented motion trajectories of individual objects, we compute their precise motion parameters, register multiple sparse point clouds to increase the density, and develop a smooth and textured surface from the dense (but scattered) point cloud. The success of our method relies on the proposed optimization framework for accurate motion estimation between two sparse point clouds. Our formulation for fusing it closest-point and it consensus based motion estimations, respectively in the absence and pres…
