Ternary and quaternary Ge-S-Se-Sb-Te amorphous chalcogenide thin films for mid-infrared applications

2017

International audience; Chalcogenide materials exhibit a unique portfolio of properties which has led to their wide use for nonvolatile memory applications such as optical storage (CD-RW and DVD-RAM), Conductive Bridging Random Access Memory or Phase Change Random Access Memory (PCRAM). More recently, thanks to huge electronic nonlinearities under electrical field application, chalcogenide glasses are considered as most promising materials to be used as Ovonic Threshold Switching (OTS) selectors [1]. Besides, thanks to high transparency window in the infrared range and large optical nonlinearities [2], chalcogenide alloys offer the opportunity of development of innovative mid-infrared (MIR)…

Photo-induced cubic-to-hexagonal polytype transition in silicon nanowires

2019

Transformation of the crystalline lattice in silicon nanowires from cubic diamond (cub-Si) to hexagonal diamond (hex-Si) was observed under laser irradiation at intensities above 10 kW cm−2 (wavelength of 473 nm) by appearance of an additional peak in their Raman spectra in the range from 490 to 505 cm−1. Formation of the hex-Si phase in SiNWs is favoured by strong mechanical stresses caused by inhomogeneous photo-induced heating, which results in a singlet–doublet splitting of the Raman peaks for LO and TO phonons at about 517 and 510 cm−1, respectively. The estimated values of the photo-induced mechanical stresses and temperatures required for the polytype transformation in SiNWs correspo…

Near-field observation of evanescent light wave coupling in subwavelength optical waveguides

2002

International audience; We report the observation, in the range of visible frequencies, of the coupling of light into integrated waveguides of subwavelength cross-sections together with a subwavelength detection at the output, of such guides. Coupling in is produced by controlling the focusing of a laser beam totally reflected at the surface of the sample. Several tens of micrometres long dielectric ridges have been efficiently excited with this technique. The phenomenon is observed in direct space by a Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope which also allows to test the principle of detection in a subwavelength volume.

Thermo-electric detection of waveguided surface plasmon propagation

2011

International audience; The thermo-electric detection of a waveguided surface plasmon traveling along one electrode of an in-plane integrated thermocouple is demonstrated. By using a particular design of the thermocouple, the thermo-electric signal due to the losses of the plasmon mode can be separated from the non-resonant heating of the waveguide. The thermo-electric signal associated with the plasmon propagation is proportional to the power coupled into the waveguided mode and exhibits a maximum at a distance from the excitation site depending on both the heat transfer coefficient of the system and the plasmon mode damping distance.

Near-field characterization of Bragg mirrors engraved in surface plasmon waveguides

2004

International audience; Surface plasmon waveguides (SPW's) are metal ridges featuring widths in the micrometer range and thicknesses of a few tens of nanometers. A focused ion beam has been used to carve microscatterers into gold SPW's and the near-field distributions around these microstructures are observed by means of photon scanning tunneling microscopy (PSTM). On the basis of near-field images, we show that a finite length periodic arrangement of narrow slits can reflect a surface plasmon mode propagating along a SPW. The reflection efficiency of the micrograting is found to depend upon the number of slits, the period of the grating, and the incident wavelength. The optimum reflection …

Near-field coupling of a point-like dipolar source with a thin metallic film: Implication for STM plasmon excitations

2012

International audience; Recent experiments have shown that it is possible to excite surface plasmons on metallic films by injecting tunnel electrons from a sharp metal tip located in the immediate proximity of the sample. When working close to a bare metal film, the excitation of surface plasmons gives rise to typical circular patterns that can be recorded in both image and Fourier planes. Important physical parameters of surface plasmon propagation such as their propagation length can be extracted from these images. In this Letter, we discuss theoretically the physics of the plasmonic excitations induced by a STM tip.

Stiffer, Stronger and Centrosymmetrical Class of Pentamodal Mechanical Metamaterials

2019

Pentamode metamaterials have been used as a crucial element to achieve elastical unfeelability cloaking devices. They are seen as potentially fragile and not simple for integration in anisotropic structures due to a non-centrosymmetric crystalline structure. Here, we introduce a new class of pentamode metamaterial with centrosymmetry, which shows better performances regarding stiffness, toughness, stability and size dependence. The phonon band structure is calculated based on the finite element method, and the pentamodal properties are evaluated by analyzing the single band gap and the ratio of bulk and shear modulus. Design, near-field characterization, and modeling of 45 circle surface-plasmon Bragg mirrors

2006

The development of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) optical elements is mandatory in order to achieve surface plasmon based photonics. A current approach to reach this goal is to take advantage of the interaction of SPP with defects and design elements obtained by the micro- or nano-structuration of the metal film. In this work, we have performed a detailed study of the performance and behavior of SPP-Bragg mirrors, designed for 45\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} incidence, based on this approach. Mirrors consisting of gratings of both metal ridges on the metal surface and grooves engraved in the metal, fabricated by means of electron beam lithography and focused ion beam, have been consi…

Deposition and characterization of cold sprayed nanocrystalline NiTi

2011

International audience; Binary 50Ni–50Ti mixture was prepared by mechanical alloying from elemental powders. After 48 h of milling, the nanocrystalline B2-NiTi powder was produced. Then, this as-milled powder was deposited by cold spraying in order to produce a target which can be used to create thin films by magnetron sputtering technique. The objective is to improve the electrical characterizations of the NiTi/SiO2/Si M.O.S structures. Themorphology evolution of the powder particles, the phase identification and the alloying evolution process as function of milling time were studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, th…

Detection and quantification of lung cancer biomarkers by a micro-analytical device using a single metal oxide-based gas sensor

2018

International audience; The analysis of exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) related to lung cancer is a very promising wayin medical diagnosis because it is non-invasive and much less expensive than traditional medical analysisused so far. In that sense, a silicon micro-analytical platform consisting of a micro-preconcentrator cou-pled to a silicon spiral gas chromatographic micro-column was built, and a metal oxide-based gas sensorwas used as a miniaturized gas detector. This micro-fabricated device was successfully tested to selec-tively detect low concentrations of VOCs considered as lung cancer biomarkers, within a few minuteseven in presence of high concentrations of water vapor …
