Flow chemistry: Imidazole-based ionic liquid syntheses in micro-scale

2010

The quarternization of an N-atom in the 1-methyl-imidazole with different alkylating agents was investigated to form so-called Ionic Liquids. (3-Chloropropyl)-trimethoxysilane, 1-chlorobutane, diethyl sulfate and methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate were used as alkylating agents. Reaction kinetics range from very slow to instantaneous and the reaction heat from endothermal to extremely exothermal respectively. The reactions were performed under flow conditions using different types of microstructured reactors as well as pre-structurized reactants in the micro-scale. Unusual heat management with integrated heat pipes allow safer performing of highly exothermal reactions with comparably high thr…

Anodic abatement of organic pollutants in water in micro reactors

2010

The electrochemical oxidation of oxalic acid (OA) was performed in a micro flow cell equipped with a boron doped diamond (BDD) anode. This preliminary study demonstrates that a flow cell with a micrometric distance between the cathode and the anode can be used to perform the electrochemical treatment of waters contaminated by organic pollutants in the absence of added supporting electrolytes with high abatements. The effect of the distance between the cathode and the anode, the flow rate and the current density on the abatement of oxalic acid and on the current efficiency was in particular studied.

Heat Pipe-Cooled Microstructured Reactor Concept for Highly Exothermal Ionic Liquid Syntheses

2010

Heat pipes used for cooling of microstructured reactors are a new approach for sustainable processing also in the lab-scale within a temperature range from ambient to more than 180 °C. The main advantage of heat pipe cooling is the dynamic behavior, i.e., the cooling rate depends on the heat released. Heat pipes can also suppress thermal runaways due to their extremely short response times on momentary temperature rises. As an example, the highly exothermal synthesis of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate from the respective reactants 1-ethyl-imidazole and methyltrifluoromethanesulfonate was investigated. By transferring the protocol to continuous-flow conditions in the mi…

Electrochemical processes in macro and microfluidic cells for the abatement of chloroacetic acid from water

2014

Abstract The remediation of solutions contaminated with monochloroacetic acid (CAA), which is one of the most resistant haloacetic acids (HAAs) to chemical degradation, dramatically depends on the adopted electrochemical approach: (i) CAA is only poorly oxidized either by homogeneous hydroxyl radical in electro-Fenton (EF), electrogenerated active chlorine or electro-oxidation on Pt anode; (ii) it is moderately abated by direct reduction on silver or compact graphite cathodes (from 30% in macro cells to 60% in the microfluidic devices); (iii) it is quantitatively removed by direct electro-oxidation on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode. The use of a microreactor enables operation in the abse…

Microreactor processing for the aqueous Kolbe-Schmitt synthesis of hydroquinone and phloroglucinol

2007

Hydroquinone and phloroglucinol were used as substrates for the aqueous Kolbe-Schmitt synthesis, using a novel processing methodology, termed high-p,T processing, recently demonstrated for the carboxylation of resorcinol. By the high-p,T approach, the temperature limitations of classical batch synthesis, e.g., set by reflux conditions (solvent boiling point), can be overcome by simple technical expenditure, e.g., the use of a few microstructured components, a capillary, and a needle valve at very low internal holdup. In this way, favorable speed-up of chemical reaction is achieved at temperatures normally outside the useful range for organic synthesis. While the hydroquinone synthesis gave …

Blue light mediated C–H arylation of heteroarenes using TiO2as an immobilized photocatalyst in a continuous-flow microreactor

2017

Titanium dioxide was applied as an immobilized photocatalyst in a microstructured falling film reactor for the continuous-flow C-H arylation of heteroarenes with aryldiazonium salts as the starting material. Detailed investigations of the catalyst and a successful long-term run proved its excellent usability for this process. Very good yields up to 99% were achieved with broad substrate scope and were compared with batch synthesis. The transfer to the continuous-flow mode revealed an impressive boost in reactor performance solely resulting from the improved irradiation and contact of the catalyst, substrate and light.

Abatement of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane in water by reduction at silver cathode and oxidation at boron doped diamond anode in micro reactors

2012

The treatment of aqueous solutions of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane was performed by anodic oxidation at boron doped diamond (BDD), cathodic reduction at silver and coupled processes. Experiments were performed in macro and micro reactors with an interelectrode distance lower than 100. μm. Drastically higher abatements of the chlorinated compound and current efficiencies were obtained in microdevices that, furthermore, allowed to perform the electrolyses with low cell voltages in the absence of supporting electrolyte. When reduction and oxidation processes were carried out simultaneously in the microreactor, a higher abatement of pollutants was obtained with the same amount of the passed charge…

Concepts of Miniaturized and Fast GC and HPLC Analytical Systems Integrated in Microreactors

1998

Requirements of an analytical system for the analysis of the products of ethenoxide and propenoxide synthesis are discussed in relation to the specific features of the microreactor technology. A selection of suitable stationary phases and column techniques are considered and preliminary results on the analysis of synthetic mixtures of compounds of ethenoxide synthesis are presented.

Modelling of a recirculating photocatalytic microreactor implementing mesoporous N-TiO2 modified with graphene

2020

Abstract The use of microreactors in (photo)catalytic processes offers new possibilities for studying and optimizing many mass and photon transfer limited reactions. In this study, we propose a scalable computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for the prediction of photocatalytic degradation of a model pollutant (4-nitrophenol) using immobilized N-doped TiO2 grown over reduced graphene oxide (N-TiO2/rGO) in a photocatalytic microreactor working in continuous flow-recirculation mode. The mode of operation used in this study allows the reduction of mass transfer limitations inherent to heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions taking place on immobilized catalysts. A CFD model was developed for …
