Background: Complete removal of old filling material during root canal retreatment is fundamental for predictable cleaning and shaping of canal anatomy. The use of an imaging retarding field analyser attached to the FOCUS IS-PEEM is described. This kind of energy filter is a simple, powerful tool to obtain microspectra from areas of down to about 1 μm using (V)UV and X-ray excitation sources. First results of microspectroscopy measured by excitation with a laboratory as well as a synchrotron X-ray source are presented.

Fully conjugated ladder polymers (CLP) possess unique optical and electronic properties, and are considered promis-ing materials for applications in (opto)electronic devices. Poly(indenoindene) is a CLP consisting of an alternating array of five- and six-membered rings, which has remained elusive so far. Studies of the Ca4Mn3O10structure obtained using high pressure and high temperature

An ideal n = 3 member of the group of Ruddlesden?Popper (RP) phases Ca4Mn3O10 was obtained by solid-state reaction under high pressure. This phase has been studied by transmission electron microscopy, convergent beam electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and parallel electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The lattice parameters are derived as a = b = 0.37 nm and c = 2.69 nm with the space group I4/mmm, which is the space group of the ideal RP phase.
Scanning tunneling microscopy investigation of tricycloquinazoline liquid crystals on gold

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of hexaalkylthioether derivatives of tricycloquinazoline (TCQ) on Au(111) and tungsten diselenide (WSe2) were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The Au(111) surfaces were found to be etched by the thioether containing solutions. Corroded surfaces which are similar to gold surfaces that were coated with SAMs of thiols or disulfides were revealed by STM. Atomic adsorption spectroscopy proved that an amount of gold that corresponds to ca. 30% of a monolayer was dissolved in the assembly solutions. The thermodynamic behavior of the system H2O/BSA was studied at 25 °C within the entire composition range: vapor pressure measurements via head space sampling gas chromatography demonstrate that the attainment of equilibria takes more than one week. A miscibility gap was detected via turbidity and the coexisting phases were analyzed. At 6 °C the two phase region extends from ca. 34 to 40 wt % BSA; it shrinks upon heating. The polymer rich phase is locally ordered, as can be seen under the optical microscope using crossed polarizers. Using porous aluminas and aluminosilicates with a regular and well-defined pore structure an attempt was made to correlate the SEC data of polystyrenes with established theoretical models. The pore structure of the two types of packings was extensively characterized by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen sorption and mercury porosimetry. The SEC distribution coefficients measured experimentally were correlated with the distribution coefficients calculated from the theoretical models for flexible polymers. Non-porous polybutadiene-coated silicas as stationary phases in reversed-phase chromatography

Abstract Non-porous silica of mean particle diameter 1.7 μm (Monospher) was coated with polybutadiene (PBD) following a published procedure. The silicas were prepared with graduated polymer loads up to 8% (w/w). Examination of the PBD-coated packings by means of electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflection infrared fourier transform spectroscopy and differential thermal gravimetry indicated that the optimum polymer load was between 1 and 3% (w/w) with regard to a dense coverage corresponding to an average layer thickness of about 4 nm.
