Co-localisation of hypoxia and perfusion markers with parameters of glucose metabolism in human squamous cell carcinoma (hSCC) xenografts

Purpose: To examine relationships between tumour hypoxia, perfusion and metabolic microenvironment at themicroregional level in three different human squamous cell carcinomas (hSCC). Materials and methods: Nude mice bearing FaDu, UT-SCC-15, and UT-SCC-5 hSCC were injected with pimonidazole hypoxia and Hoechst perfusion markers. Measuring Psychobiosocial States in Sport: Initial Validation of a Trait Measure

We examined the item characteristics, the factor structure, and the concurrent validity of a trait measure of psychobiosocial states. In Study 1, Italian athletes (N = 342, 228 men, 114 women, Mage = 23.93, SD = 6.64) rated the intensity, the frequency, and the perceived impact dimensions of a psychobiosocial states scale, trait version (PBS-ST), which is composed of 20 items (10 functional and 10 dysfunctional) referring to how they usually felt before an important competition. In Study 2, the scale was cross validated in an independent sample (N = 251, 181 men, 70 women, Mage = 24.35, SD = 7.25). Objective: Complement activation probably plays a pathogenic role in multiple organ failure in shock. This study evaluates the effects of C1-esterase-inhibitor treatment on leukocyte-endothelial interaction in the mesenteric microcirculation in hemorrhagic shock. Methods: Rats underwent median laparotomy and exteriorization of an ileal loop for intravital microscopy of the mesenteric microcirculation. Chronic social defeat stress causes retinal vascular dysfunction

Abstract Purpose The roles of vascular dysfunction and chronic stress have been extensively discussed in the pathophysiology of glaucoma. Our aim was to test whether chronic stress causes retinal vascular dysfunction and therewith induces retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) loss. Methods Twelve mice underwent chronic social defeat (CSD) stress, while 12 mice received control treatment only. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured with a rebound tonometer. Occurrence of Retinal Ganglion Cell Loss via Autophagy and Apoptotic Pathways in an Autoimmune Glaucoma Model

In glaucoma, an apoptotic death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) has been shown. However, little is known about other cell death mechanisms, like autophagy or necrosis. Therefore, we investigated these mechanisms in addition to antibody deposits in an experimental autoimmune glaucoma model.Rats were immunized with a retinal ganglion cell-layer homogenate (RGA), while controls received sodium chloride. Cellular composition and three-dimensional organization of the subventricular germinal zone in the adult mammalian brain.

The adult mammalian subventricular zone (SVZ) contains stem cells that give rise to neurons and glia.In vivo, SVZ progeny migrate 3–8 mm to the olfactory bulb, where they form neurons. We show here that the SVZ of the lateral wall of the lateral ventricles in adult mice is composed of neuroblasts, glial cells, and a novel putative precursor cell. The topographical organization of these cells suggests how neurogenesis and migration are integrated in this region. Type A cells had the ultrastructure of migrating neuronal precursors. Angiotensin II (Ang II) may be a key molecule in the development of atherosclerosis. Because the incidence of coronary atherosclerosis in premenopausal women is lower than that observed in men or postmenopausal women, we have investigated the effect of estrogens on Ang II–induced leukocyte recruitment in vivo using intravital microscopy in the rat mesenteric microcirculation. Superfusion for 60 minutes with Ang II induced a significant increase in leukocyte rolling flux, adhesion, and emigration. p-Chlorophenylalanine treatment depresses the number of synaptic ribbon profiles in the rat pineal gland, but does not abolish their day-night rhythm

It is largely unknown as to how the day/night rhythm of pineal synaptic ribbon number is regulated. Transcriptional events related to the nocturnal formation of new synaptic ribbons occur early in the morning, when pineal serotonin levels begin to increase. The present study was carried out in order to elucidate as to how altered serotonin levels affect the day/night changes in the number of synaptic ribbon profiles.
