Manipulation of nanoparticles of different shapes inside a scanning electron microscope

2014

In this work polyhedron-like gold and sphere-like silver nanoparticles (NPs) were manipulated on an oxidized Si substrate to study the dependence of the static friction and the contact area on the particle geometry. Measurements were performed inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) that was equipped with a high-precision XYZ-nanomanipulator. To register the occurring forces a quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a glued sharp probe was used. Contact areas and static friction forces were calculated by using different models and compared with the experimentally measured force. The effect of NP morphology on the nanoscale friction is discussed.

Visualizing pectin polymer-polymer entanglement produced by interfacial water movement.

2020

In this report, we investigated the physical conditions for creating pectin polymer-polymer (homopolymer) entanglement. The potential role of water movement in creating pectin entanglement was investigated by placing water droplets-equivalent to the water content of two gel phase films-between two glass phase films and compressing the films at variable probe velocities. Slow probe velocity (0.5 mm/sec) demonstrated no significant debonding. Corresponding videomicroscopy demonstrated an occasional water bridge, but no evidence of stranding or polymer entanglement. In contrast, fast probe velocity (5 mm/sec) resulted in 1) an increase in peak adhesion strength, 2) a progressive debonding curv…

A new tool for nanoscale X-ray absorption spectroscopy and element-specific SNOM microscopy.

2007

Abstract Investigations of complex nanostructured materials used in modern technologies require special experimental techniques able to provide information on the structure and electronic properties of materials with a spatial resolution down to the nanometer scale. We tried to address these needs through the combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) using synchrotron radiation microbeams with scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) detection of the X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) signal. The first results obtained with the prototype instrumentation installed at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (Grenoble, France) are presented. They illustrate the possibi…

Chemical microimaging and microspectroscopy of surfaces with a photoemission microscope

1997

We applied element sensitive photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) to investigate surfaces of devices built from complex materials. Conventional PEEM suffers from lack of information about the chemical composition of the imaged surface. Such information can be obtained by PEEM via tuning the photon energy to X-ray absorption edges. To apply spectromicroscopy we acquired and subtracted microscopic images using photon energies just below and at the edges. The resulting difference gives a micro-image of the lateral distribution of a specific element. Microspectroscopy is performed by recording the intensity of secondary electrons in selected spots during a sweep of the photon energy. We app…

The lateral variation of solid state reactions at surfaces studied by means of photoemission electron microscopy: formation of titanium silicides

2001

The alloying and oxygen reduction at titanium silicon interfaces were studied by means of photoemission microscopy. The microscopic chemical composition of the sample surface was characterised by means of imaging X-ray absorption. The silicide formation was studied at clean and oxidised silicon substrates both covered with micron-sized titanium patterns.

Investigation of phthalocyanine crystals exposed to NO2 ambient gas

2002

Crystals of free base phthalocyanine (H2pc) and its unsubstituted metal derivatives Mpc (where M=Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, and pc=C32H16N8 2−=phthalocyanine ligand) were examined after being exposed to NO2 ambient gas. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) supported by X-ray microprobe analysis (EDAX), UV–Vis and FTIR spectroscopy as well as X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) were applied to study the crystals chemistry and surface morphology. The NO2 molecules were found to penetrate the crystal unit which led to the breakdown of the phthalocyanine macrocycle. The surface of the doped crystals has been scaled and covered by a layer composed predominantly of phthalimide. Despite vacuum desorption, it has…

Quantitative molecular plating of large-area 242Pu targets with improved layer properties

2015

Abstract For measurements of the neutron-induced fission cross section of 242Pu, large-area (42 cm2) 242Pu targets were prepared on Ti-coated Si wafers by means of constant current density molecular plating. Radiochemical separations were performed prior to the platings. Quantitative deposition yields (>95%) were determined for all targets by means of alpha-particle spectroscopy. Layer densities in the range of 100–150 μg/cm2 were obtained. The homogeneity of the targets was studied by radiographic imaging. A comparative study between the quality of the layers produced on the Ti-coated Si wafers and the quality of layers grown on normal Ti foils was carried out by applying scanning electron…

Characterization of prehispanic cosmetics found in a burial of the ancient city of Teotihuacan (Mexico)

2012

The present paper reports the chemical data obtained on samples of pigmenting materials contained in 31 miniature vessels found in a burial found in Teopancazco, a multiethnic neighborhood center located in the southeastern sector of the archaeological site of Teotihuacan (Central Mexico) and the analytical protocol established for the complete characterization of these archaeological materials. For this purpose a multi-technique approach based on the combination of several non destructive and micro-destructive instrumental techniques, namely, light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy-X-ray micro-analysis (SEMe EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), voltammetry of micropart…

Increased electron donor and electron acceptor characters enhance the adhesion between oil droplets and cells of Yarrowia lipolytica as evaluated by …

2003

The adhesion of methyl ricinoleate droplets to cells of the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica was investigated. A new cytometric method, relying on the double staining of fatty globules with Nile Red and of cells with Calcofluor, enabled us to quantify methyl ricinoleate droplet adhesion to cells precultured on a hydrophilic or on a hydrophobic carbon source. In this last case, droplet adsorption was enhanced and a MATS (microbial adhesion to solvents) test revealed that this increase was due to Lewis acid-base interactions and not to an increase in the hydrophobic properties of the cell surface. These preliminary results demonstrate that the developed cytometric method is promising for various app…

Efficient, non-toxic anion transport by synthetic carriers in cells and epithelia.

2016

Transmembrane anion transporters (anionophores) have potential for new modes of biological activity, including therapeutic applications. In particular they might replace the activity of defective anion channels in conditions such as cystic fibrosis. However, data on the biological effects of anionophores are scarce, and it remains uncertain whether such molecules are fundamentally toxic. Here, we report a biological study of an extensive series of powerful anion carriers. Fifteen anionophores were assayed in single cells by monitoring anion transport in real time through fluorescence emission from halide-sensitive yellow fluorescent protein. A bis-(p-nitrophenyl)ureidodecalin shows especial…
