Direct measurement of forces between particles and bubbles

1999

One of the elementary stages of the flotation process is the formation of an aggregate between the particle and a bubble. This aggregate formation is governed by hydrodynamic, capillary and interparticle forces. During the last four years, techniques have been developed to measure directly the force between a colloidal particle and a bubble. These techniques are closely related to the development of atomic force microscopy. Advantages and possibilities, as well as limits and drawbacks are described.

Textures in hexatic films of nonchiral liquid crystals: Symmetry breaking and modulated phases

Novel modulated textures, such as stripes and multiarmed star defects, have been observed in freely suspended films of nonchiral liquid crystals just below the smectic-$C$ to hexatic phase transition. Detailed studies using depolarized reflection microscopy suggest that the stripes are locally chiral surface splay domains of the smectic-$L$ phase, a tilted hexatic not previously identified in thermotropic liquid crystals. Line defects which form additional domain walls in the hexatic lattice lead to characteristic modulations of the basic one-dimensional stripe pattern. The effect of magnetic anisotropy on the spin configurations of patterned La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 elements.

We study the effect of magnetocrystalline anisotropy on the magnetic configurations of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 bar and triangle elements using photoemission electron microscopy imaging. The dominant remanent state is a low energy flux-closure state for both thin (15 nm) and thick (50 nm) elements. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy, which competes with the dipolar energy, causes a strong modification of the spin configuration in the thin elements, depending on the shape, size and orientation of the structures. Investigation of a novel material for magnetoelectronics: Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al

Heusler compounds are promising candidates for future spintronics device applications. The electronic and magnetic properties of Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al, an electron-doped derivative of Co2CrAl, are investigated using circularly polarized synchrotron radiation and photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). Element specific imaging reveals needle shaped Cr rich phases in a homogeneous bulk of the Heusler compound. The ferromagnetic domain structure is investigated on an element-resolved basis using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) contrast in PEEM. Towards the origin of the shear force in near-field microscopy

The shear force from a gold or a graphite sample acting on an approaching near-field optical probe is studied in detail. The adiabatic and dissipative contributions to the force are clearly distinguished by monitoring the amplitude as well as the phase of the tip vibration when the tip approaches the surfaces. We also take into account that not only the damping and the resonance frequency but also the mass of the system changes when the tip approaches the surface. The first publication about a confocal fluorescence microscope integrated into the distal tip of a conventional colonoscope (Pentax EC 3830FK, Tokyo, Japan) appeared in 2004 [1], showing that in vivo microscopy at subcellular resolution (0.7 µm) simultaneously displayed with white-light endoscopy had become possible. Today, endomicroscopy can be performed in the upper and lower GI tract [2]–[10]. This chapter deals with the examination technique of confocal laser endomicroscopy.
