Suspended core tellurite glass optical fibers for infrared supercontinuum generation

International audience; We report the fabrication and characterization of tellurite TeO(2)-ZnO-Na(2)O (TZN) microstructured suspended core optical fibers (MOFs). These fibers are designed for infrared supercontinuum generation with zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) at 1.451 mu m. The measured losses at this wavelength are approximately 6 dB/m for a MOF with a 2.2 mu m diameter core. The effective area of a particular fiber is 3.5 mu m(2) and the nonlinear coefficient is calculated to be 437 W(-1)km(-1). By pumping a 20 cm long fiber at 1.56 mu m with a sub-nj femtosecond laser source, we generate a supercontinuum (SC) spanning over 800 nm in the 1-2 mu m wavelength range.

Chalcogenide glass hollow core photonic crystal fibers

International audience; We report the first hollow core photonic crystal fibers (HC PCF) in chalcogenide glass. To design the required HC PCF profiles for such high index glass, we use both band diagram analysis to define the required photonic bandgap and numerical simulations of finite size HC PCFs to compute the guiding losses. The material losses have also been taken into account to compute the overall losses of the HC PCF profiles. These fibers were fabricated by the stack and draw technique from Te20As30Se50 (TAS) glass. Tellurites fibers for infrared supercontinuum sources : opto-geometric profiles and extrinsic absorptions management

This PhD thesis work focuses on the synthesis and purification of vitreous materials used for the development of waveguides with varied profiles, dedicated to supercontinuum (SC) generation between 1 and 5 μm.Concerning the purification of tellurite glasses, several leads were followed, but best results are obtained for the purification of the TeO2-ZnO-Na2O glassy system by the means of zinc fluoride. Attenuation measurements performed on several meter-long single-index fiber samples reveal the nearly complete elimination of water-related absorptions between 3 and 4 μm (OH ions concentration lower than 1 ppm mass.). The work reported in this thesis deals with the fabrication of suspended core tellurite microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) for supercontinuum generation beyond 2 µm. In order to reach our aim, we first studied thermal and optical properties of TeO2-ZnO-R2O and TeO2-WO3-R2O (where R = Li, Na and K) glasses. The glass 80TeO2-10ZnO-10Na2O (molar %) has been chosen in order to make MOFs for characterization of the generated non linear optical effects. Synthesis performed under dry and oxidative atmosphere allowed us to reduce the hydroxyl groups concentration by a factor of 30 compared to fabrication in air atmosphere. Polarization Modulation Instability in All-Normal Dispersion Microstructured Optical Fibers With Quasi-Continuous Pump

We report the experimental observation of the polarization modulation instability (PMI) effect in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with quasi-continuous pumping. The small unintentional birefringence (~10-5), that any realistic non-polarization maintaining MOF exhibits, contributes to this nonlinear effect. PMI can produce two sidebands whose polarization state is orthogonal to the polarization of the pump. In this work, only one type of PMI process is observed, i.e., when the pump is polarized along the slow axis of the fiber and sidebands are generated in the fast axis mode. Pulsed electric field (PEF) recovery of biomolecules from Chlorella: Extract efficiency, nutrient relative value, and algae morphology analysis

This study investigated the effects of pulsed electric field (PEF) (3 kV/cm, 44 pulses, 99 kJ/kg), solvent (H2O or 50 % DMSO) and time (0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 min) on the extraction of Chlorella antioxidant biomolecules and minerals. The results showed that PEF treatment increased the biomolecules recovery. For the extraction time of 120 min, more proteins and polyphenols were obtained using water, while more chlorophyll a and b, and carotenoids were obtained using 50 % DMSO as the extraction solvent. Accurate modal characterization of optical fibers using acousto-optics

In-fiber acousto-optics enable accurate and broadband characterization of two mode optical fibers. Differential effective index, group index and dispersion are reported for two-mode optical fibers. Small phase differences between the quasi-degenerated vector modes comprising the LP 11 mode are also measured. In addition, a fine analysis of fiber axial non-uniformities can be performed using a time-resolved acousto-optic technique. In this case, sub-ppm changes of effective index are measured with few cm resolution along fiber sections of about 2 m.

Endlessly single-mode heat-sink waveguide

Recently, a new form of optical fiber, the photonic crystal fiber, has been reported. This fiber has a hexagonal array of submicrometer air holes running along its length and a lattice site without a hole (a line defect) in its center. The defect acts as a core, confining light that travels along the fiber as a guided mode. This structure can be endlessly single mode, never supporting more than one confined mode no matter what the diameter of the core or the wavelength of the light. Morphology of ZnO grown by MOCVD on sapphire substrates

A quantitative roughness and microstructural analysis of ZnO grown on sapphire by atmospheric metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) is presented. In order to investigate the influence of the substrate on the morphology, different sapphire orientations have been employed. Scanning force microscopy data have been analyzed for a variety of thicknesses to elucidate, if possible, the growth mechanisms involved in the growth process.
