Nitric Oxide-Releasing Drug Glyceryl Trinitrate Targets JAK2/STAT3 Signaling, Migration and Invasion of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells
2021
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive disease with invasive and metastasizing properties associated with a poor prognosis. The STAT3 signaling pathway has shown a pivotal role in cancer cell migration, invasion, metastasis and drug resistance of TNBC cells. IL-6 is a main upstream activator of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway. In the present study we examined the impact of the NO-donor glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) on the activation of the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway and subsequent migration, invasion and metastasis ability of TNBC cells through in vitro and in vivo experiments. We used a subtoxic dose of carboplatin and/or recombinant IL-6 to activate the JAK2/STAT3 signaling path…
Dissemination of oenological yeasts through bird migration in Sicily.
2009
The composition of yeast communities on shown to be dependent on several factors, including geographical location of the vineyard, type of soil, age of the vineyard, grapevine variety and harvesting technique. Moreover, insects and birds were in part responsible for the dissemination of fermentative yeasts during their feeding (Francesca et al, 2009). In order to evaluate the dissemination of fermenting yeasts, migrating and vineyard inhabiting birds were caught and ringed in four experimental sites: “Riserva Naturale Integrale Lago Preola e Ghorghi Tondi” (Mazara del Vallo, TP) and the Sicilian islands of Lampedusa, Ustica and Linosa. The last sites represent important stop-over for migrat…
Vote choices of left-authoritarians: Misperceived congruence and issue salience
2021
Abstract Often lacking parties with a corresponding profile, citizens with economically left and culturally authoritarian, or nationalist, policy orientations face a trade-off between congruence on economic and on cultural issues. How such left-authoritarian voters resolve this trade-off depends on which issues are more salient to them, previous research argues. We extend this line of research by considering the role of (mis-)perceived party positions. Using a survey in the context of the 2017 German election, we show how perceived congruence and issue importance interactively shape the left-authoritarian vote. Our findings indicate that many left-authoritarians vote for a party simply beca…
How the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and their voters veered to the radical right, 2013–2017
2019
Abstract Until 2017, Germany was an exception to the success of radical right parties in postwar Europe. We provide new evidence for the transformation of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to a radical right party drawing upon social media data. Further, we demonstrate that the AfD's electorate now matches the radical right template of other countries and that its trajectory mirrors the ideological shift of the party. Using data from the 2013 to 2017 series of German Longitudinal Elections Study (GLES) tracking polls, we employ multilevel modelling to test our argument on support for the AfD. We find the AfD's support now resembles the image of European radical right voters. Specifically, g…
Pathogenic microorganisms carried by migratorybirds passing through the territory of the island ofUstica, Sicily (Italy)
2011
Several studies have shown that migratory birds play an important role in the ecology, circulation and dissemination of pathogenic organisms. In October 2006, a health status evaluation was performed on a large population of migratory birds passing through the territory of Ustica (Italy), an island located on the migration route of many species of birds to Africa, and various laboratory tests were conducted. In total, 218 faecal swabs and the internal organs of 21 subjects found dead in nets were collected for bacteriological and virological examination, including avian influenza and Newcastle disease. In addition, 19 pooled fresh faecal samples were collected for mycological examination. T…
Reply to Douka et al: Critical evaluation of the Ksâr 'Akil chronologies
2015
Our paper (1) proposes a new chronology for Ksâr 'Akil based on 16 accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) determinations on shells. To minimize the possibility of dating diagenetically compromised samples, we conducted amino acid racemization analyses on the intracrystalline proteins, oxygen isotope analysis, and geochemical characterization of all dated shells. Our calibrated radiocarbon ages fit well with existing Levantine chronologies, but are up to 4,000 y older than Douka et al.’s (2). Our paper explores several possibilities for this difference, whereas Douka et al. (3) provide alternative explanations. They accept our radiocarbon ages as correct but question our sample selection and Ba…
'Love comes first, and it is ahead of any different political partisanism': How political polarizations compare to other forms of discrimination in B…
2021
Background: Affective polarization and stigma toward individuals with schizophrenia and toward immigrants in Argentina are not new despite its importance and dissemination. However, no research has been conducted taking into consideration political partisanship and attitudes toward these groups. Aims: Political polarization and attitudes toward socialization across party lines are studied in conjunction with attitudes toward immigrants and toward individuals with schizophrenia. Method: Individuals from Buenos Aires ( n = 712) were surveyed for their political partisanship and their attitudes toward Peruvian and Bolivian immigrants, people with schizophrenia and partisans from the opposing p…
The generation of oligodendroglial cells is preserved in the rostral migratory stream during aging
2013
The subventricular zone (SVZ) is the largest source of newly generated cells in the adult mammalian brain. SVZ-derived neuroblasts migrate via the rostral migratory stream (RMS) to the olfactory bulb (OB), where they differentiate into mature neurons. Additionally, a small proportion of SVZ-derived cells contribute to the generation of myelinating oligodendrocytes. The production of new cells in the SVZ decreases during aging, affecting the incorporation of new neurons into the OB. However, the age-related changes that occur across the RMS are not fully understood. In this study we evaluate how aging affects the cellular organization of migrating neuroblast chains, the proliferation, and th…
Na celowniku tajnych służb PRL. Sprawa Aleksandra Demideckiego-Demidowicza
2016
TARGETED BY THE SECRET SERVICES OF THE PRL. THE CASE OF ALEKSANDER DEMIDECKI-DEMIDOWICZ Who was Aleksander Demidecki-Demidowicz. Without a doubt he was one of the most prominent politicians in exile in France. He was famous for his ability to win people over and to cooperate with people of different political views. His significance and role is best illustrated by the fact that in 1958 he was unanimously chosen as the leader of the Division of the National Council of Poland. It is no wonder that the intelligence services of the PRL government were interested in him. What were the consequences? Did Demidecki-Demidowicz really collaborate with the PRL authorities, or did he just play along in…
