The migration of femoral components after total hip replacement surgery: accuracy and precision of software-aided measurements.

2003

To assess the accuracy and precision of a software-aided system to measure migration of femoral components after total hip replacement (THR) on digitised radiographs.Subsidence and varus-valgus tilt of THR stems within the femur were measured on digitised anteroposterior pelvic radiographs. The measuring software (UMA, GEMED, Germany) relies on bony landmarks and comparability parameters of two consecutive radiographs. Its accuracy and precision were calculated by comparing it with the gold standard in migration measurements, radiostereometric analysis (RSA). Radiographs and corresponding RSA measurements were performed in 60 patients (38-69 years) following cementless THR surgery. The UMA s…

Leukodiapedesis and leukocyte migration in the leptomeninges and in the subarachnoid space.

1981

Pleocytosis in cerebrospinal fluid and infiltration of the leptomeningeal tissue have been studied after injection of ferritin into the subarachnoid space (SAS) of cats. The most important source of granulocytes in the leptomeninges are the relatively large veins of the pia mater, which have very thin walls. Passing between the lining cells of the pia mater the granulocytes leave the connective tissue space of the pia mater and reach the SAS. Leukodiapedesis has also been observed in veins crossing the SAS. During this process, gaps between the lining cells of the perivascular leptomeningeal sheath may develop. There are two possible ways for the granulocytes to pass from the vascular pia m…

IAP proteins as targets for drug development in oncology.

2013

The inhibitors of apoptosis (IAPs) constitute a family of proteins involved in the regulation of various cellular processes, including cell death, immune and inflammatory responses, cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and cell motility. There is accumulating evidence supporting IAP-targeting in tumors: IAPs regulate various cellular processes that contribute to tumor development, such as cell death, cell proliferation, and cell migration; their expression is increased in a number of human tumor samples, and IAP overexpression has been correlated with tumor growth, and poor prognosis or low response to treatment; and IAP expression can be rapidly induced in response to chemotherapy or …

Music-Related Nostalgic Experiences of Young Migrants

2013

Music is a powerful means for constructing identity – both formulating and remembering who one is – and migration can be seen as a particular situation creating challenges for this sense of identity. This qualitative study focused on investigating music-related nostalgic experiences of young migrants. The aim of the study was to identify features characteristic to music-related nostalgia particularly in relation to the experience of migration. Ten university students (Iranians currently living in migration) participated in the study. Data was collected through spoken interviews with an additional short questionnaire and a task to listen to self-selected nostalgic music. The interviews focus…

O nowy kształt Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Z dziejów myśli geopolitycznej Ligi Niepodległości Polski po II wojnie światowej

2020

The Polish Independence League established at the end of 1944 became the political representation of Piłsudski’s adherents in exile. The head office of the PIL was in London, where Piłsudski’s adherents published a bulletin ‘Listy z Londynu’ (Letters from London), and then a magazine ‘Za Wolność i Niepodległość’ (For Freedom and Independence) published irregularly, in which they promoted their political concepts. The establishment of a regional union of states (federation) in Central and Eastem Europę after World War II occupied a prominent place in the political thought of the Marshall’s heirs. They were in favour of political, military and economic integration of the countries in this par…

Stick around: Cell–Cell Adhesion Molecules during Neocortical Development

2021

The neocortex is an exquisitely organized structure achieved through complex cellular processes from the generation of neural cells to their integration into cortical circuits after complex migration processes. During this long journey, neural cells need to establish and release adhesive interactions through cell surface receptors known as cell adhesion molecules (CAMs). Several types of CAMs have been described regulating different aspects of neurodevelopment. Whereas some of them mediate interactions with the extracellular matrix, others allow contact with additional cells. In this review, we will focus on the role of two important families of cell–cell adhesion molecules (C-CAMs), classi…

New migration processes and new frontiers for linguistic research

2021

Recent migrations show unprecedented characteristics in terms of migratory routes, individual profiles of migrants and condition of isolation in arrival contexts. Combining sociolinguistic and linguistic perspectives, the article reconstructs the forms of linguistic contact between local and migrant populations in one of the main gateways to Europe, Palermo (Italy), and the specific conditions of local language acquisition by newcomers. It is argued that notions of (im)mobility and segregation must be included in migration-centred linguistic research

Synthesis and Rearrangement of 2-(N-Methyl-N-nitroamino)-4-phenylthiazole

2007

2-(N-Methyl-N-nitroamino)-4-phenylthiazole (5) was prepared and rearranged in aqueous dioxane under influence of sulphuric acid of various concentrations. 2-(N-Methylamino)- 5-nitro-4-phenylthiazole (6) was the only product up to 50% acid concentration. At higher acidities, significant amounts of nitro derivatives 3b and3c, substituted in benzene ring, were also formed. The result indicates that migration of the N-nitro group occurs on the intramolecular path, however, in concentrated sulphuric acid, formation of nitronium ion and ring nitration also takes place.
