Three-Dimensional Analysis of Component Stability of the Nellix Endovascular Aneurysm Sealing System After Treatment of Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic A…

2016

Purpose: To assess short-term stability and conformational changes of the Nellix EndoVascular Aneurysm Sealing (EVAS) System using 3-dimensional (3D) analysis. Methods: Postoperative computed tomography (CT) scans obtained at 0, 3, and 12 months in 24 patients (mean age 75±7 years; 22 men) who underwent EVAS between December 2013 and December 2014 for intact abdominal aortic aneurysm (within the instructions for use) were evaluated for stent-graft deviation in multiple planes using dedicated 3D analysis software. In addition, 2D analysis using an anatomically fixed reference landmark was performed to assess craniocaudal migration. Clinical and follow-up data of the patients were recorded a…

Effect of large positioning holes on capsule fixation of plate-haptic intraocular lenses

2000

Abstract Purpose To compare the centration and fixation of silicone plate-haptic intraocular lenses (IOLs) with different-sized positioning holes. Setting Eye Clinic of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, Mainz, Germany. Methods In a prospective randomized study, 51 Chiroflex C10 and 56 Chiroflex C11 IOLs were implanted under standardized conditions by the same surgeon. The IOL position was documented at the end of surgery and by retroillumination on the first day and 5 months postoperatively. The positioning-hole area was evaluated by ultrasound biomicroscopy (50 MHz) 5 months postoperatively. Results One day postoperatively, no IOL in either group was decentered more than 1.0 mm. Aft…

UNC-52/perlecan affects gonadal leader cell migrations in C. elegans hermaphrodites through alterations in growth factor signaling.

2003

0012-1606 doi: DOI: 10.1016/S0012-1606(03)00014-9; The unc-52 gene of Claenorhabditis elegans encodes a homologue of the basement membrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan perlecan. Viable alleles reduce the abundance of UNC-52 in late larval stages and increase the frequency of distal tip cell (DTC) migration defects caused by mutations disrupting the UNC-6/netrin guidance system. These unc-52 alleles do not cause circumferential DTC migration defects in an otherwise wild-type genetic background. The effects of unc-52 mutations on DTC migrations are distinct from effects on myofilament organization and can be partially suppressed by mutations in several genes encoding growth factor-like molecu…

Association Mapping Based on a Common-Garden Migration Experiment Reveals Candidate Genes for Migration Tendency in Brown Trout

2019

A better understanding of the environmental and genetic contribution to migratory behavior and the evolution of traits linked to migration is crucial for fish conservation and fisheries management. Up to date, a few genes with unequivocal influence on the adoption of alternative migration strategies have been identified in salmonids. Here, we used a common garden set-up to measure individual migration distances of generally highly polymorphic brown trout Salmo trutta from two populations. Fish from the assumedly resident population showed clearly shorter migration distances than the fish from the assumed migratory population at the ages of 2 and 3 years. By using two alternative analytical …

Global age-sex-specific fertility, mortality, healthy life expectancy (HALE), and population estimates in 204 countries and territories, 1950–2019: a…

2020

Background Accurate and up-to-date assessment of demographic metrics is crucial for understanding a wide range of social, economic, and public health issues that affect populations worldwide. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 produced updated and comprehensive demographic assessments of the key indicators of fertility, mortality, migration, and population for 204 countries and territories and selected subnational locations from 1950 to 2019. Methods 8078 country-years of vital registration and sample registration data, 938 surveys, 349 censuses, and 238 other sources were identified and used to estimate age-specific fertility. Spatiotemporal Gaussian…

Legal Issues Affecting Labour Market Integration of Migrants in Finland

2021

AbstractFinland has only relatively recently become a country of immigration, and as a result most immigration and integration policy legislation is also relatively recent. Since the 1990s, the number of migrants to Finland has increased steadily, motivating the adoption of various policy measures to regulate migration and support integration. From the perspective of migrant labour market integration, the two most important legislative acts are the Aliens Act (FINLEX 301/2004) and the Act on the Promotion of Immigrant Integration (FINLEX 1386/2010), which lay out basic labour market integration supports for migrants, and determine who can work in Finland and on which grounds. Finland’s comp…

Microwave-induced electromigration in multicomponent metallic alloys

2010

The crystallization of amorphous FeCoCuZrAlSiB alloy ribbons during microwave heating was investigated in situ using time-resolved X-ray powder diffraction. The formation of the nanocrystalline α-(Fe,Co)(SiAl) phase during the primary crystallization stage is followed by the crystallization of the residual glassy matrix. Scanning electron microscopy analysis after microwave exposure reveals the formation of nanosized hillocks evenly distributed over the ribbon surfaces. Local chemical composition analysis by energy-dispersive spectroscopy shows that the surface clusters are enriched in Cu and Al. The occurrence of this typical electromigration effect imposes a strong restriction on the dura…

Scaffolds based on hyaluronan crosslinked with a polyaminoacid: Novel candidates for tissue engineering application

2008

New porous scaffolds, with a suitable hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation, useful for tissue engineering applications have been obtained by a carbodiimide mediated reaction between hyaluronan (HA) and a synthetic polymer with a polyaminoacid structure such as α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy). Scaffolds with a different molar ratio between PAHy repeating units and HA repeating units have been prepared and characterized from a chemical and physicochemical point of view. Tests of indirect and direct cytotoxicity, cell adhesion, and spreading on these biomaterials have been performed by using murine L929 fibroblasts. The new biomaterials showed a good cell compatibility and ability to allow ce…
