Percutaneous antegrade electropapillotomy. Study in dogs.

Antegrade electropapillotomy using the percutaneous transcystic approach was successfully performed in 11 of 16 dogs. When the intervention was effective, the pressure gradient between common bile duct and duodenum decreased from 6 to 1.3 mm Hg on average and returned to gradients slightly below the initial values after 4 weeks, owing to reactivation of the sphincter mechanism. Ineffective cutting, however, resulted in a temporary pressure rise. In one dog a papillary stenosis developed and was relieved by antegrade electrocutting. Long-term interferon-α treatment of children with chronic hepatitis delta: A multicentre study

We assessed the efficacy of prolonged interferon-alpha (IFN) therapy in children with chronic hepatitis caused by hepatitis delta virus (HDV) by treating 26 paediatric cases with IFN-alpha 2b (5 MU m-2, then 3 MU m-2 three times weekly for 12 (medium-term group MTG) or 24 months (long-term group, LTG). Compliance and tolerability were acceptable. At the end of therapy a complete biochemical response [normalization of alanine aminotransferase (ALT)] occurred in 12 children (5/13 in MTG and 7/13 in LTG). Hepatitis C virus antibodies are found in the serum of most patients with chronic hepatitis C. However, the significance of the humoral response is still uncertain. In this study, in vitro IgG and IgM anti-hepatitis C virus secretion by peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with chronic hepatitis C was analyzed. Peripheral-blood mononuclear cells from 21 of 36 patients (58.3%) secreted IgG anti-hepatitis C virus in vitro, as demonstrated with anti-hepatitis C virus—specific enzyme immunoassays and recombinant immunoblot assays. The effects of exercise (swimming), fatigue, and recovery on the intracellular pH (pHi), energy-rich phosphates, and related metabolites were studied in the gastrocnemius muscle of common frogs (Rana temporaria) at 20 degrees C. Exercise caused a rapid decrease in the content of phosphocreatine (PCr) and a corresponding increase in that of Pi. The ATP level remained virtually constant for 1 min; its precipitous decrease during the following minute was associated with a rise in the contents of inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP) and NH4+, indicating a marked activation of AMP deaminase. A single dose of 50 microg of trans-retinoic acid administered to rats significantly raised the level of hepatic tyrosine after a few hours. This effect was compared with that of dexamethasone and a possible correlation between these effectors was also investigated. An equal increase in enzyme activity level caused by retinoic acid was observed in adrenalectomized rats, leading to the suggestion that the effect of retinoic acid on liver tyrosine aminotransferase is independent of glucocorticoids.
