Liver injury in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

2020

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) infection is a global health threat. To inform the liver community on the potential relevance of COVID-19, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published data on liver injury in patients with COVID-19 infection. METHODS: We searched PubMed and Google Scholar through 22 March according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Pooled data were analyzed by using random-effects meta-analyses. RESULTS: A total of 14 studies combining data from 2.871 patients were identified. The prevalence of pre-existing liver disease was reported at 3.1%. The pooled prevalence of elevated aspartate aminot…

Effects of dietary dehydrated lemon peel on some biochemical markers related to general metabolism, welfare and stress in gilthead seabream (Sparus a…

2019

Dehydrated lemon peel (DLP) at two levels (1.5% and 3%) was included for 30 days in the diet of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) and after 15 and 30 days the serum and skin mucus of fish were analysed. In serum, both experimental diets led to an initial decrease in glucose and lactate after which the levels became comparable to the control. Dietary DLP modulated the activity of transaminases, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase. The total antioxidant status showed a progressive increase in relation to levels of inclusion of DLP and time of administration (p '.05). In skin mucus, some biomolecular markers related to general stress, oxidative stress and apoptosis exhib…

Imaging features of histological subtypes of hepatocellular carcinoma: Implication for LI-RADS

2021

Background & Aims The histopathological subtypes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are associated with distinct clinical features and prognoses. This study aims to report Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS)-defined imaging features of different HCC subtypes in a cohort of resected tumours and to assess the influence of HCC subtypes on computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) LI-RADS categorisation in the subgroup of high-risk patients. Methods This retrospective institutional review board-approved study included patients with resected HCCs and available histopathological classification. Three radiologists independently reviewed preoperative CT and MRI exams. T…

Cervical Motion Preserving Procedures (TDR)

2019

Symptomatic cervical degenerative disc disease leading to radiculopathy is a common problem with an incidence of 0.83–1.79 per 1.000 person years. While many episodes of radicular symptoms can be successfully managed by conservative therapy, patients with refractory symptoms or a significant paresis are candidates for a surgical treatment. However, different surgical techniques are available to treat cervical degenerative disc disease, as anterior cervical discectomy without fusion, anterior cervical discectomy with fusion or posterior foraminotomy. Anterior cervical discectomy with fusion as described in the 1960’s (Chap. 3) is currently regarded as the gold standard. Although ACDF provide…

Implication of Normal Liver Enzymes in Liver Disease

2009

Summary.  Chronic liver disease is usually asymptomatic until its late stages and also significant hepatic necroinflammation and fibrosis may be present in persistently normal ALT levels HBV, HCV carriers or similarly, in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Given the large number of persons in the general population which may harbor a clinically significant liver disease behind the screen of normal alanine aminotransferase, more attention should be devoted to future research for alternative noninvasive markers of liver damage.

Chick embryo retina development in vitro: the effect of insulin.

1995

In this paper we study the development of chick embryo retina cultured in vitro and the effects exerted by insulin. Retinas were removed from 7-day embryos and cultured in serum- and hormone-free medium for 7 additional days. Under these conditions retinal cells survived and underwent cholinergic differentiation, as previously ascertained by Hausman et al. (Dev. Brain Res., 1991, 59: 31-37). However, a great retardation of development was noted compared to uncultured control, 14-day retina. In fact both wet weight and DNA and protein content increased much slower than in ovo and the tubulin content decreased below even the starting value. In addition, although after 7 days in culture retina…

Posterior ‘Motion Preserving’ Procedures (Frykholm)

2019

Cervical radiculopathy from degenerative disease is a common problem with an incidence of 0.83–1.79 per 1000 person years. It can be caused by a cervical disc herniation, bony foraminal stenosis or spinal canal stenosis. Upon failure of conservative therapy or a significant motor deficit surgical treatment is indicated. A posterior cervical foraminotomy is one surgical option for the treatment of selected patients with lateral cervical disc herniations.

Enzymatic Determination in Serum of Lathyritic and Prednisone-treated Lathyritic Rats

1966

WHILE a remarkably raised serum-level of transaminases and aldolase is found in dermatomyositis, such augmentation, as a rule, is not found in cases of severe muscular involvement of scleroderma and disseminated lupus erythematosus (acutus)1–3.

Traumatic lumbar disc extrusion mimicking spinal epidural hematoma: Case report and literature review

2020

Background: Because the neurological presentation of spinal epidural hematomas (SEH) is often not specific, they may be misdiagnosed as acute lumbar disk herniations. Here, we present a case in which a traumatic disc extrusion mimicked an epidural hematoma and reviewed the appropriate literature. Case Description: A 27-year-old male sustained a high-energy fall. The lumbar MRI scan showed a L4-S1 ventral medium/high signal intensity mass on the T1- and high signal intensity lesion on T2-weighted images; the original diagnosis was spinal epidural hematoma. However, at surgery, consisting of a left L4 and L5 hemilaminectomy with L4-L5 and L5-S1 laminotomy, an extruded lumbar disc was encount…

Modificētās L-ornitīna δ-aminotransferāzes strukturālie pētījumi jaunu diazonamīda A struktūranalogu dizainam

2015

Darba mērķi ir izstrādāt metodi rekombinantas modificētās ornitīna δ-aminotransferāzes (MOAT) produkcijai un kristalizēšanai, analizēt MOAT strukturālās atšķirības no ornitīna δ-aminotransferāzes (OAT), kā arī noteikt MOAT kristālu struktūru kompleksā ar Latvijas Organiskās sintēzes institūta pētnieku sintezētajiem diazonamīda A struktūranalogiem. Tādejādi, varētu noteikt MOAT un diazonamīda A struktūranalogu ķīmisko mijiedarbību veidu, iegūstot zināšanas jaunu MOAT inhibitoru dizainam.
