OP VI – 5 Spatial and temporal variability of personal exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields in children in europe

2018

Background/aim Exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) has rapidly increased and little is known about exposure levels in children. This study aims to describe personal RF-EMF environmental exposure levels from handheld devices and fixed site transmitters in European children and its day-to-day and year-to-year repeatability. Methods Environmental RF-EMF exposure (µW/m 2 ) was measured in 529 children (ages 8–18) in Denmark, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Spain using personal portable exposure metres over 3 days in 2014–2016, and repeated in 28 children one year later. Metres captured exposure every 4 s. Activity diaries collected children’s location and use …

An alternative formulation of the boundary element method

1982

Abstract The paper suggests an alternative formulation of the Boundary Element Method, in which singular solutions generated by unit dislocations are required and moreover the stresses at the interior points of the body are directly computed from the boundary quantities, without passing through the displacements. Relationships between the singular solutions for unit dislocation and unit force are derived.

Tetrathiafulvalene-Based Mixed-Valence Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor Triads: A Joint Theoretical and Experimental Approach

2013

This work presents a joint theoretical and experimental characterisation of the structural and electronic properties of two tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based acceptor-donor-acceptor triads (BQ-TTF-BQ and BTCNQ-TTF - BTCNQ; BQ is naphthoquinone and BTCNQ is benzotetracyano-p-quinodimethane) in their neutral and reduced states. The study is performed with the use of electrochemical, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and UV/Vis/NIR spectroelectrochemical techniques guided by quantum-chemical calculations. Emphasis is placed on the mixed-valence properties of both triads in their radical anion states. The electrochemical and EPR results reveal that both BQ-TTF-BQ and BTCNQ-TTF-BTCNQ triads in…

Formation and mixed-valent behaviour of a substituted tetraferrocenylstannane.

2010

A tetrasubstituted tetraferrocenylstannane is formed from 1-bromoferrocene-1′-carboxylic acid methyl ester and copper bronze. The molecular structure is almost perfectly tetrahedral with Fe⋯Fe distances of around 6 A. In solution two sequential one-electron processes and one two-electron process are indicative of mixed-valent intermediates. Intermetallic interactions have been probed by preparative oxidation, paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy, Mosbauer spectroscopy, UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Molar distalization with pendulum appliances in the mixed dentition: effects on the position of unerupted canines and premolars.

2004

Introduction: The pendulum appliance allows for rapid molar distalization without the need for patient compliance. Its efficiency has been confirmed in a number of clinical studies. However, the potential interactions and positional changes between the deciduous molars used for dental anchorage and the erupted and unerupted permanent teeth have yet to be clarified when this appliance is used for molar distalization in the mixed dentition. Methods: Twenty-nine patients in the mixed dentition each received a modified pendulum appliance with a distal screw and a preactivated pendulum spring for bilateral distalization of the maxillary molars. The patients were divided into 4 groups based on de…

Isolation and Characterization of Novosphingobium sp. Strain MT1, a Dominant Polychlorophenol-Degrading Strain in a Groundwater Bioremediation System

2002

ABSTRACT A high-rate fluidized-bed bioreactor has been treating polychlorophenol-contaminated groundwater in southern Finland at 5 to 8°C for over 6 years. We examined the microbial diversity of the bioreactor using three 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA)-based methods: denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, length heterogeneity-PCR analysis, and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The molecular study revealed that the process was dependent on a stable bacterial community with low species diversity. The dominant organism, Novosphingobium sp. strain MT1, was isolated and characterized. Novosphingobium sp. strain MT1 degraded the main contaminants of the groundwater, 2,4,6-trichloroph…

Evidence for Natural Horizontal Transfer of the pcpB Gene in the Evolution of Polychlorophenol-Degrading Sphingomonads

2002

ABSTRACT The chlorophenol degradation pathway in Sphingobium chlorophenolicum is initiated by the pcpB gene product, pentachlorophenol-4-monooxygenase. The distribution of the gene was studied in a phylogenetically diverse group of polychlorophenol-degrading bacteria isolated from contaminated groundwater in Kärkölä, Finland. All the sphingomonads isolated were shown to share pcpB gene homologs with 98.9 to 100% sequence identity. The gene product was expressed when the strains were induced by 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol. A comparative analysis of the 16S rDNA and pcpB gene trees suggested that a recent horizontal transfer of the pcpB gene was involved in the evolution of the catabolic pat…

Rational design of allosteric modulators of the aromatase enzyme: An unprecedented therapeutic strategy to fight breast cancer.

2019

Estrogens play a key role in cellular proliferation of estrogen-receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancers (BCs). Suppression of estrogen production by competitive inhibitors of the enzyme aromatase (AIs) is currently one of the most effective therapies against ER + BC. Yet, the development of acquired resistance, after prolonged treatments with AIs, represents a clinical major concern. Serendipitous findings indicate that aromatase may be non-competitively inhibited by clinically employed drugs and/or industrial chemicals. Here, by performing in silico screening on two putative allosteric sites, molecular dynamics and free energy simulations, supported by enzymatic and cell-based assays, we id…

ROMOT: A Robotic 3D-Movie Theater Allowing Interaction and Multimodal Experiences

2017

In this paper we introduce ROMOT, a RObotic 3D-MOvie Theater. ROMOT is built with a robotic motion platform, includes multimodal devices and supports audience-film interaction. Differently from other similar systems, ROMOT is highly versatile as it can support different setups, integrated hardware and contents. Regarding to the setups, here we present a first-person movie, a mixed reality environment, a virtual reality interactive environment and an augmented reality mirror-based scene. Regarding to integrated hardware, the system currently integrates a variety of devices and displays that allow audiences to see, hear, smell, touch and feel the movement, all synchronized with the filmic exp…
