Clinical microbeam radiation therapy with a compact source: specifications of the line-focus X-ray tube

Highlights • Line-focus X-ray tubes are suitable for clinical microbeam radiation therapy (MRT). • A modular high-voltage supply safely enables high electron beam powers. • An electron accelerator was designed to generate an eccentric focal spot. • We simulated a peak-to-valley dose ratio above 20 for single-field MRT. • Microbeam arc therapy spares healthy brain tissue compared to single-field MRT.
Orthogonal Multicarrier Transmission with Modal Channel Estimation

A novel multi-carrier orthogonal transmission scheme is presented. While being simpler to implement, it has a spectral efficiency and design parameters similar to those of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing based on Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (OFDM/OQAM). A parametric channel estimation technique is subsequently reported. The proposed technique is based on an algorithm obtained from classic Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) by relaxation of the hypothesis on the number of measurements with respect to the number of sensors. Numerical simulations show that our proposal outperforms previous works in this field.
The JYFLTRAP control and measurement system

The JYFLTRAP setup has been used for precision mass spectrometry since 2003. An essential part of this setup is the computer-controlled system consisting of software and hardware that is required to operate the instruments. The software has been developed solely at JYFL using LabVIEW and C++ development tools. The hardware consists of devices controlled using Control Area Network (CAN) field bus and Ethernet for communication purposes. LAN/GPIB-gateways, modular multichannel ISEG DC power supplies and WAGO I/O systems are also used.
Ethernet FSO Communications Link Performance Study Under a Controlled Fog Environment

In this letter the performance of a free space optical (FSO) communication link in the presence of fog is experimentally investigated in an indoor environment. A dedicated indoor atmospheric chamber, replicating the outdoor environment, is being used to evaluate the FSO link performance under the fog condition. Theoretical analysis supported by the experimental evaluation has been carried out for the intensity modulation/direct detection on-off keying non-return-to-zero (OOK-NRZ), OOK return-to-zero (OOK-RZ) and four pulse position modulation (4-PPM) modulation formats at the Ethernet baseline data-rate. A study on spectral optimisation in partial response CPM signals

An optimisation technique for the minimisation of the effective bandwidth in partial response CPM signals is described. The minimum Euclidean distance is used as optimisation constraint because the bit error probability is a function of this parameter for high values of signal to noise ratio. The procedure has been implemented for a correlation length corresponding to two signalling intervals. Abstract The paper deals with the problem of cold recovery for direct utilization both in the site of regasification facility and far from it. A modular LNG regasification unit is proposed having the regasification capacity of 2 billion standard cubic meters/year of gas. Enabling Backoff for SCM Wake-Up Radio: Protocol and Modeling

In sub-carrier modulation (SCM) wake-up radio (WuR) enabled wireless sensor networks, a node can initiate data transmission at any instant of time. In this letter, we propose to activate a backoff procedure before sending wake-up calls (WuCs) in order to avoid potential collisions among WuCs. Consequently, no backoff is needed for the main radio after a WuC is received. A discrete-time Markov chain model is developed to evaluate the performance. Numerical results on network throughput, energy efficiency, average delay, and collision probability reveal the benefits of enabling backoff for SCM-WuRs, especially under heavy traffic loads or saturated traffic conditions.

In this study we investigate the influence of the operation method in Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) on the measured potential distribution. KPFM is widely used to map the nanoscale potential distribution in operating devices, e.g., in thin film transistors or on cross sections of functional solar cells. Quantitative surface potential measurements are crucial for understanding the operation principles of functional nanostructures in these electronic devices. Games on recursive game graphs can be used to reason about the control flow of sequential programs with recursion. In games over recursive game graphs, the most natural notion of strategy is the modular strategy, i.e., a strategy that is local to a module and is oblivious to previous module invocations, and thus does not depend on the context of invocation.
