Nitrogen Hydrate Cage Occupancy and Bulk Modulus Inferred from Density Functional Theory-Derived Cell Parameters

2021

International audience; Gas clathrate hydrate solid materials, ubiquitous in nature as found either on the ocean floor, permafrost on the Earth, or in extraterrestrial planets and comets, are also technologically relevant, for example, in energy storage or carbon dioxide sequestration. Nitrogen hydrate, in particular, is of great interest as a promoter of the kinetics of the methane replacement reaction by carbon dioxide in natural gas hydrates. This hydrate may also appear in the chemistry of planets wherever nitrogen constitutes the majority of the atmosphere. A fine understanding of the stability of this hydrate under various thermodynamic conditions is thus of utmost importance to asses…

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of High-Pressure LixNa1-xTayNb1-yO3Solid Solution Perovskite Ceramics

2012

The effects of the temperature of synthesis and component concentration on microstructure of high-pressure LixNa1-xTayNb1-yO3 solid solution perovskite ceramics (х = 0.12, 0.17; у = 0; у ≥ 0.5) were studied. Original results of elastic properties of high-pressure LixNa1-xTayNb1-yO3 (х = 0.17; 0 ≤ у ≤ 0.5) solid solutions measured by contact probe techniques are reported. The observed decrease of the modulus of elasticity with increasing the sintering temperature of Li0,17Na0,83TayNb1-yO3 solid solutions is assumed to be related to conditions of re-crystallisation of disordered solid solutions at synthesis under high pressure.

Micromechanical modeling of MXene-polymer composites

2020

Polymer composites are considered among the most promising materials for functional and structural applications. Improvement of mechanical properties of polymer composites using nanomaterials has generated much interest in recent years. This study aimed to predict the tensile strength and determine the damage mechanism of MXene-polyvinyl alcohol and MXene-epoxy composites. All parameters such as particle size, mechanical properties and interface layer strength were calibrated by finite element modeling with respect to experimental results. The influence of aspect ratio, volume fraction and MXene flake alignment on final mechanical properties of representative volume element models were inve…

The Use of Atomic Force Microscopy in Determining the Stiffness and Adhesion Force of Human Dentin After Exposure to Bleaching Agents

2009

Introduction: Oxidant bleaching agents may induce several alterations on mineralized teeth tissues. Our aim is to study,at the ultrastructurallevel, mechanicalmodifications induced on dentin after exposure to different bleaching agents. Methods: Nanoindentation performed with atomic force microscopy was used to measure changes in dentin stiffness as well as the adhesion force between the tip and the tissue both in intertubular and peritubulardentin.Foreachspecimen, dentinlocalization, and bleaching agent, 100 independent nanoindentations were performed. Carbamide peroxide (30%) and hydrogenperoxide(35%) wereusedasbleaching agents. Results: A significant reduction of both stiffness and adhesion…

Molecular dynamics of carrageenan composites reinforced with Cloisite Na+ montmorillonite nanoclay

2017

[EN] Nanocomposites comprising biodegradable carrageenan and glycerol(KCg) as the host polymer, with different contents of natural montmorillonite (MMT) as filler, were prepared by a solution casting process. Different techniques have been used to determine the interaction/behavior among the different components of the samples such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and, mainly, Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). FTIR indicates hydrogen interaction between carrageenan matrix and silicate that is confirmed by the XRD data indicating some kind of carrageenan intercalation between the MMT layers. A rather ho…

Effect of Chitin Whiskers on the Molecular Dynamics of Carrageenan-Based Nanocomposites

2019

[EN] Films of carrageenan (KC) and glycerol (g) with different contents of chitin nanowhiskers (CHW) were prepared by a solution casting process. The molecular dynamics of pure carrageenan (KC), carrageenan/glycerol (KCg) and KCg with different quantities of CHWs as a filler was studied using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. The analysis of the CHW effect on the molecular mobility at the glass transition, T-g, indicates that non-attractive intermolecular interactions between KCg and CHW occur. The fragility index increased upon CHW incorporation, due to a reduction in the polymer chains mobility produced by the CHW confinement of the KCg network. The apparent activation energy associated…

Characterization process to measure the electrical contact resistance of Gas Diffusion Layers under mechanical static compressive loads

2016

AEM2016. International conference on Advanced Energy Materials, University of Surrey, Guildford, ROYAUME-UNI, 12-/09/2016 - 14/09/2016; Recent research has identified the mechanical properties of the fuel cell internal components (in particular, the Gas Diffusion Layers - GDLs) as key-parameters to obtain high final performances of the generator. The mechanical compression modulus of these components, the stability of their mechanical properties with respect to temperature and humidity, and their ability to interact with water have an impact on the electrical contact resistances in the stack and, by consequence, on the overall performance of the electric generator. Reducing the losses by co…

Time dependent viscoelastic rheological response of pure, modified and synthetic bituminous binders

2016

Bitumen is a viscoelastic material that exhibits both elastic and viscous components of response and displays both a temperature and time dependent relationship between applied stresses and resultant strains. In addition, as bitumen is responsible for the viscoelastic behaviour of all bituminous materials, it plays a dominant role in defining many of the aspects of asphalt road performance, such as strength and stiffness, permanent deformation and cracking. Although conventional bituminous materials perform satisfactorily in most highway pavement applications, there are situations that require the modification of the binder to enhance the properties of existing asphalt material. The best kn…

Morphology, Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Isotropic and Anisotropic PP/rPET/GnP Nanocomposite Samples

2021

The effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) on the morphology, rheological, and mechanical properties of isotropic and anisotropic polypropylene (PP)/recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET)-based nanocomposite are reported. All the samples were prepared by melt mixing. PP/rPET and PP/rPET/GnP isotropic sheets were prepared by compression molding, whereas the anisotropic fibers were spun using a drawing module of a capillary viscometer. The results obtained showed that the viscosity of the blend is reduced by the presence of GnP due to the lubricating effect of the graphene platelets. However, the Cox–Merz rule is not respected. Compared to the PP/rPET blend, the GnP led to a slight incre…

Epoxy composites filled with high surface area-carbon fillers

2013

Citation: J. Appl. Phys. 114, 164304 (2013); doi: 10.1063/1.4826529 (Received 24 July 2013; accepted 6 October 2013; published online 22 October 2013) A comprehensive analysis of electrical, electromagnetic (EM), mechanical, and thermal properties of epoxy resin composites filled with 0.25–2.0 wt. % of carbon additives characterized by high surface area, both nano-sized, like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CBH), and micro-sized exfoliated graphite (EG), was performed. We found that the physical properties of both CNTs- and CBH-based epoxy resin composites increased all together with filler content and even more clearly for CBH than for CNTs. In the case of EG-based composites, go…
