Ordering of two-dimensional crystals confined in strips of finite width.

Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the effect of confinement on a crystal of point particles interacting with an inverse power law potential $\ensuremath{\propto}{r}^{\ensuremath{-}12}$ in $d=2$ dimensions. This system can describe colloidal particles at the air-water interface, a model system for experimental study of two-dimensional melting. It is shown that the state of the system (a strip of width $D$) depends very sensitively on the precise boundary conditions at the two ``walls'' providing the confinement. Flow-induced structures in magnetorheological suspensions

We have measured the yield stress of a magnetic suspension as a function of the external field. To explain the existence of this yield stress, we report a comparison between two models, one based on isolated chains of particles and the other taking into account that the structure is formed by aggregates of particles.

Shear behaviour of undiluted polyisobutylenes

Some new data in shear flow are presented for two commercial polyisobutylene samples, namely Vistanex LMMH and L 100. In particular beyond a few steady state results, the tangential stress build-up after a sudden imposition of a shear rate and the decay after cessation of steady shear flow have been collected. The data are used to further test a constitutive equation already advanced by some of the authors. The comparison seems to confirm the validity of the proposed model, whose single adjustable parameter is shown to be independent of molecular weight.

PBAT Based Composites Reinforced with Microcrystalline Cellulose Obtained from Softwood Almond Shells

This study explores the processability, mechanical, and thermal properties of biocompostable composites based on poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) as polymer matrix and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) derived from softwood almond (Prunus dulcis) shells (as-MCC) as filler at two different weight concentration, i.e., 10 wt% and 20 wt%. The materials were processed by melt mixing and a commercial MCC (c-MCC) was used as filler comparison. The fibrillar shape of as-MCC particles was found to change the rheological behavior of PBAT, particularly at the highest concentration. Effect of UD carbon on the specific mechanical properties of glass mat composites for marine applications

In this work the influence of a uniaxial carbon fabric layer on the mechanical performances of a glass mat/epoxy composite used for marine applications has been studied. All the structures have been made, at room temperature, by vacuum bagging technique. Tension and flexural tests have been carried out in order to evaluate the specific mechanical properties of the composite and to compare these with those of the marine aluminium alloy 6016-T4. The glass composites have higher specific strength but lower specific modulus than aluminium alloy. Enhanced Mechanical Properties in Organofluorosilica Thin Films

Fluorinated hybrid organic-inorganic silicates (ORMOSIL) thin films display exceptional mechanical properties in terms of both hardness and elastic modulus that can be finely tuned by varying the angular velocity of the spin coating process. Hence, as traditional alkyl-modified silica xerogels generally show poor mechanical behavior, these materials offer a solution to a major limitation to applicability of ORMOSIL-based films.
