Recognition-Directed Supramolecular Assemblies of Metal Complexes of Terpyridine Derived Ligands with Self-Complementary Hydrogen Bonding Sites

The synthesis and X-ray structures of three metal complexes with terpyridine-derived ligands that contain amino-pyrimidine and amino-pyrazine moieties are presented. They have been designed in view of directing their self-assembly into specific supramolecular arrays through molecular recognition interactions. The solid-state structures indeed reveal extensive hydrogen-bonded networks. The Co complex 4a with PF6- counterions builds a two-dimensional infinite interwoven grid through strong double hydrogen bonds (d(N-H-N) =2.918-3.018 A) between the amino groups and the N atoms of the rings, with all H-bonding sites saturated. Generation of [2×2] Grid Metallosupramolecular Architectures from Preformed Ditopic Bis(acylhydrazone) Ligands and through Component Self‐Assembly

Ditopic bis(acylhydrazone) ligands, derived from the reactions of carbohydrazides with 2-phenylpyrimidine-4,6-dicarbaldehyde and designed for grid formation with octahedrally coordinating transition-metal ions, exhibit a varied coordination chemistry depending upon the degree of their deprotonation. The neutral acylhydrazones are relatively poor ligands and are seemingly involved in multiple, labile complexation equilibria varying with the solvent and the particular metal salt in solution; nevertheless, grid complexes of different forms can be isolated in the solid state. Efficient Self-Assembly of Di-, Tri-, Tetra-, and Hexavalent Hosts with Predefined Geometries for the Investigation of Multivalency

Coordination-driven self-assembly of differently shaped di- to hexavalent crown-ether host molecules is described. A series of [21]crown-7- and [24]crown-8-substituted bipyridine and terpyridine ligands was synthetized in a "toolbox" approach. Subsequent coordination to 3d transition metal and ruthenium(II) ions provides an easy and fast access to host assemblies with variable valency and pre-defined orientations of the crown-ether moieties. Impact of Molecular Size and Shape on the Supramolecular Co‐Assembly of Chiral Tricarboxamides: A Comparative Study

We report herein a comparative investigation of the chiral amplification features of a series of three families of C 3 -symmetric tricarboxamides: 1,3,5-triphenylbenzenetricarboxamides (TPBAs), benzenetricarboxamides (BTAs) and oligo(phenylene ethynylene) tricarboxamides (OPE-TAs). As previously observed for BTAs and OPE-TAs, a similar dichroic response is obtained for TPBAs decorated with three, two or only one chiral side chain bearing stereogenic centers, thus confirming the efficient transfer of point chirality to the supramolecular helical aggregates. Self-Assembly, Characterisation, and Crystal Structure of Multinuclear Metal Complexes of the [2×3] and [3×3] Grid-Type

The self-assembly of new multimetallic complexes of grid-type architecture is described. The binding of a set of tris-terdentate ligands, 1 a-1 d, based on terpyridine-like subunits, with different octahedrally coordinated metal ions leads to the formation of species whose structure depends strongly on the ligand, the metal ion, the counterion, the solvent, and the reaction conditions. Under suitable conditions, the [3 x 3] grid was obtained from the reaction of ligand 1 a with zinc tetrafluoroborate and from ligand 1 b with mercury triflate. Decoding the Consequences of Increasing the Size of Self-Assembling Tricarboxamides on Chiral Amplification

A complete series of experimental and theoretical investigations on the supramolecular polymerization of chiral (1 and 2) and achiral (3) oligo(phenylene ethynylene) tricarboxamides (OPE-TAs) is reported. The performance of seargents-and-soldiers (SaS) and majority rules (MR) experiments has allowed deriving a full set of thermodynamic parameters, including the helix reversal penalty (HRP) and the mismatch penalty (MMP). The results described illustrate the influence exerted by the number of stereogenic centers per monomeric unit and the temperature on the chiral amplification phenomenon. Kinetically Controlled Sequential Growth of Surface-Grafted Chiral Supramolecular Copolymers.

We report a facile strategy to grow supramolecular copolymers on Au surfaces by successively exposing a surface-anchored monomer to solutions of oppositely charged peptide comonomers. Charge regulation on the active chain end of the polymer sufficiently slows down the kinetics of the self-assembly process to produce kinetically trapped copolymers at near-neutral pH. Phytochemical analysis of two Weigela florida cultivars, “Pink Poppet” and “Jean’s Gold”

Abstract Nine different oleanane-type glycosides were extracted and isolated by various chromatographic methods from two Weigela florida cultivars, “Pink Poppet” and “Jean’s Gold”. From the roots of W. florida “Pink Poppet”, three monodesmosidic oleanolic acid saponins 1, 4, 5 were obtained, together with one hederagenin ester 6 from the leaves, and six bidesmosidic saponins 2, 3, 6-9 were isolated from the leaves of W. florida “Jean’s Gold”. Among compounds 1-9, three were previously undescribed (1-3) and six (4-9) were already published in the literature. Nonlocal van der Waals Approach Merged with Double-Hybrid Density Functionals: Toward the Accurate Treatment of Noncovalent Interactions

Noncovalent interactions drive the self-assembly of weakly interacting molecular systems to form supramolecular aggregates, which play a major role in nanotechnology and biochemistry. In this work, we present a thorough assessment of the performance of different double-hybrid density functionals (PBE0-DH-NL, revPBE0-DH-NL, B2PLYP-NL, and TPSS0-DH-NL), as well as their parent hybrid and (meta)GGA functionals, in combination with the most modern version of the nonlocal (NL) van der Waals correction. Guest-Induced Folding and Self-Assembly of Conformationally Adaptive Macrocycles into Nanosheets and Nanotubes

A conformationally adaptive macrocycle is presented, namely zorb[4]arene, which exists in multiple conformations in the uncomplexed state. The binding cavity of zorb[4]arene is concealed, either due to a collapsed conformation or by self-inclusion. The zorb[4]arene with long alkyl chains manifests itself with surprisingly low melting point and thus exist as an oil at room temperature. Binding of a guest molecule induces the folding and conformational rigidity of zorb[4]arene and leads to well-defined three-dimensional structures, which can further self-assemble into nanosheets or nanotubes upon solvent evaporation, depending on guest molecules and the conformations they can induce.
