From Single Molecules to Nanoscopically Structured Functional Materials

2006

AbstractThe synthesis of MS2 (M = Mo, W) onion-like nanoparticles by means of a high temperature MOCVD process starting from W(CO)6 and elemental sulfur is reported. The reaction can also be carried out in two steps where the intermediate amorphous WS2 nanoparticles formed through the high temperature reaction of tungsten and sulfur in the initial phase of the reaction are isolated and converted in a separate annealing step to onion-type WS2 nanoparticles. Based on a study of the temperature dependence of the reaction a set of conditions could be derived where onion-like structures were formed in a one-step reaction. Onion-like structures obtained in the single-step process were filled, whe…

Defects in oxide glasses

2005

An insight into the present understanding of point defects in the simplest and the most radiation-resistant oxide glass, glassy silicon dioxide (silica) is presented. The defects and their generation processes in glassy and α-quartz forms of silicon dioxide are significantly different. The only defect, confirmed to be similar in both materials, is oxygen vacancy. In silica, additional defects of dangling bond type are generated from precursor sites formed by strained Si-O bonds, and by modifier ions. The optical absorption spectra of silica are dominated by paramagnetic dangling bond type defects: silicon dangling bond (“E′-center”) and oxygen dangling bond (“non-bridging oxygen hole center…

Novel Applications of Dynamic NMR in Organic Chemistry

2003

Abstract This review article is oriented on NMR applications in studying various dynamic processes of organic molecules. The topic as a whole is too large to be covered exhaustively in one article or by one author. Therefore, the literature searches are limited mainly for the years 1999–2001. Further, many interesting branches joined essentially with organic chemistry such as supramolecular and organometallic chemistry are left outside this article because there exist recent reviews on these topics. Similarly, the theoretical background of dynamic NMR is not included. The nature of dynamic NMR itself is changing with the recent progress in computational possibilities to estimate the differe…

1977

2-Phenoxy-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane (14) was polymerized by benzyl halogenides at temperatures between 120 and 200°C. It was found that the main chain consists predominantly of unexpected ethylene 1,2-ethanediphosphonate units 7; only about 10% of the monomer was incorporated as the expected 2-hydroxyethanephosphonate structure. An insertion mechanism, proposed by Harwood and Patel for the analogous polymerization of 2-phenyl-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane, does not agree with our experimental results. A hypothesis is developed involving a two step addition process, which exclusively occurs at the chain end. Alternating, one monomer molecule is added by a normal Michaelis-Arbuzov-reaction, and then a …

White Phosphorus Is Air-Stable Within a Self-Assembled Tetrahedral Capsule

2009

Molecular Fire Quencher Cage-shaped molecular assemblies can regulate the reactivity of smaller molecules trapped within them. Mal et al. (p. 1697 ) extend this approach to enable the protection of elemental white phosphorus (P 4 ), a substance that rapidly ignites on contact with oxygen. The tetrahedral cages self-assemble in aqueous solution through coordination of six ligands to four iron ions, and efficiently capture phosphorus from a suspension. The water-soluble host-guest constructs were stable in air for at least 4 months, but released intact P 4 rapidly on displacement by added benzene.

An Unexpected Three-Component Condensation Leading to Amino(3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-isoindol-1-ylidene)acetonitriles.

2005

The reaction of 2-carboxybenzaldehyde with primary amines in the presence of cyanide leads to the formation of 2-substituted amino(3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-isoindol-1-ylidene)acetonitriles. These compounds originate from the condensation of 2-carboxybenzaldehyde with the amine and two molecules of hydrogen cyanide and represent a novel class of isoindolinones.
