The blood group antigen Lewis Y is expressed on epithelial tumors of the respiratory, digestive and reproductive system. Despite being regarded as an attractive target for immunotherapy, its function is still not well defined and its prognostic value remains a subject of discussion. Eighty-three paraffin-embedded tissue sections of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients in stage I-IIIa, who underwent surgical resection of the primary tumor (73% male; 43% adenocarcinoma), were stained with a new, highly specific monoclonal antibody against Lewis Y (clone A70-C/C8). The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible prognostic significance of p53 protein overexpression and tumor angiogenesis (TA) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients, together with other clinicopathological variables. Forty-two NPC patients were evaluated in relation to survival. Nuclear p53 overexpression in neoplastic and endothelial cells was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) with the monoclonal antibody DO-7 and the polyclonal antibody against factor VIII-related antigen, respectively. A photoreactive alpha-D-glucose probe has been designed for the specific detection of carbohydrate binding proteins (CBPs). The probe consists of four parts: (i) an alpha-D-glucose moiety; (ii) the digoxigenin tag; (iii) the photoreactive cross-linker; and (iv) the lysyl-lysine backbone. After incubation with lectins in the dark, the probe is activated and cross-linked to the CBPs after being treated by several flashes. Using this method we have identified a new alpha-D-glucose CBP of M(r) = 33,000, termed CBP33, in the nuclei of rats exposed to transient immobilization stress. Immunohistochemical evaluation of bone marrow lymphoid nodules in chronic myeloproliferative disorders

One hundred and seventy bone marrow biopsies from patients with chronic myeloproliferative disorders (CMPDs) were evaluated for the presence of lymphoid nodules (LNs) and were immunostained using a panel of monoclonal antibodies (UCHL1, 4KB5 and L26) recognizing different lymphocyte antigens. LNs were found in 35% of cases of idiopathic thrombocythaemia, 24.6% of myelofibrosis/osteomyelosclerosis, 18.2% of polycythaemia vera 12.1% of chronic myeloid leukaemia and 19.2% of borderline cases. Varying degrees of immunohistochemical positivity for the three antibodies tested were found. AbstractMonoclonal antibodies have been prepared against rat liver epoxide hydrolase (EH), some of which gave precipitation lines on immunodiffusion against pure EH suggesting the presence of repetitive structural domains on the enzyme. Using ELISA, with polyclonal antibodies to rat and rabbit liver EH, reactivity and therefore structural similarities between EH of all species tested, including human, were observed. This was in contrast to immunodiffusion results demonstrating the limitations of the latter technique. MUC1 (CD227), an established tumor marker, is expressed on glandular epithelia and on epithelial tumors. Tumor MUC1 differs from normal MUC1 by modified glycan side chains. In previous studies pineal astrocytes have been characterized immunohistochemically mainly by use of antisera to glial fibrillary acidic protein. Because of the recent demonstration of this protein in non-astrocytic cells the question of its specificity as an astrocytic marker has been raised.
