Movie Script Similarity Using Multilayer Network Portrait Divergence

International audience; This paper addresses the question of movie similarity through multilayer graph similarity measures. Recent work has shown how to construct multilayer networks using movie scripts, and how they capture different aspects of the stories. Based on this modeling, we propose to rely on the multilayer structure and compute different similarities, so we may compare movies, not from their visual content, summary, or actors, but actually from their own storyboard. We propose to do so using “portrait divergence”, which has been recently introduced to compute graph distances from summarizing graph characteristics. We illustrate our approach on the series of six Star Wars movies.
Despedazar un cuerpo: de una cierta tendencia en el cine de terror postmoderno

El presente texto analiza el corte que supuso en el cine de terror la película Psycho (Psicosis, A. Hitchcok, 1960). Por una parte, desde el punto de vista de la imaginería, desplazó las fuentes del terror hacia fennómenos de la realidad colindante en lugar de seguir en el fantástico romántico o de ciencia ficción; por otra parte, desde la perspectiva del régimen de visibilidad anunció el choque del ojo del espectador con el ejercicio de la violencia física ejercida sobre un cuerpo humano. Así pues, Psycho se mantiene en un momento de fractura del terror clásico americano, pero recurre al montaje allí donde los Splatter movies modernos se entregarían al voyeurismo sin contemplaciones.

El presente texto toma a su cargo el noticiario oficial del franquismo (NO-DO) proponiendo su análisis desde la óptica de su significación en la historia. Contra su apariencia, NO-DO surge en un momento de mayor distensión política y no de propaganda de choque. Su función ritual y el grado de información que ofrece son extremadamente limitados. De ahí precisamente su riqueza para ser analizado como manifestación del estándar franquista en un período de desmovilización, es decir, como un instrumento de consenso o consentimiento más que como uno de propaganda.

Emotion Elicitation: A Comparison of Pictures and Films

Abstract Pictures and film clips are widely used and accepted stimuli to elicit emotions. Based on theoretical arguments it is often assumed that the emotional effects of films exceed those of pictures, but to date this assumption has not been investigated directly. The aim of the present study was to compare pictures and films in terms of their capacity to induce emotions verified by means of explicit measures. Stimuli were (a) single pictures presented for 6 s, (b) a set of three consecutive pictures with emotionally congruent contents presented for 2 s each, (c) short film clips with a duration of 6 s. Questo contributo propone un’analisi delle relazioni genitoriali poste in essere nelle famiglie italiane degli anni Cinquanta. Seguendo le suggestioni della recente Visual History, viene scelto il cinema come fonte cui attingere per ricostruire i rapporti tra madre e padre che, nel “decennio più lungo del secolo breve”, si avviavano ad una lenta ridefinizione.
