AB1035 INTESTINAL MICROBIOTA COMPOSITION OF ADULT PATIENTS WITH FAMILIAL MEDITERRANEAN FEVER AND HEALTHY CONTROLS (THE RHEUMA-BIOTA STUDY)
2020
Background:Although Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a monogenic disease, microbiota composition may play role in the pathogenesis or phenotypic expression. Objectives:We aim to evaluate the intestinal microbiota composition in patients with FMF and to compare with healthy controls. Methods:In this prospective cohort study, a group of 10 adult patients with FMF and 10 age-appropriate healthy controls, for which there was strict inclusion/exclusion, were enrolled. Fecal samples were stored at -80°C until DNA extraction. A region of the 16S rRNA gene (V3-V4) was selected and sequencing was performed on the Illumina MiSeq platform at the Sequencing and Bioinformatics Service of FISABIO foun…
Soluble liver antigen (SLA) antibody detection by ELISA and multiplexing technologies
2002
Abstract Objective: Develop and evaluate assays for the detection of antibodies to soluble liver antigen (SLA). SLA, also known as liver/pancreas antibody, was found to be 100% specific for autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in a recent study of 2000 sera collected from individuals with various disease conditions and healthy individuals (Wies et al., Lancet 2000; 355:1510). Although SLA antibodies occur in only about 30% of patients with autoimmune hepatitis, they are found in some individuals with AIH who are negative for other autoantibodies. Methods: Specimens from patients with autoimmune hepatitis, non-autoimmune liver disease, various autoimmune conditions, as well as specimens from healthy i…
Plazmas miRNS kā multiplās sklerozes biomarķieri
2018
Neuropsychological underpinnings of the dynamics of bipolar disorder
2015
Although we have gained enormous insights into neurobiological and psychological underpinnings of bipolar disorder (BD) symptoms, our knowledge concerning pathogenic mechanisms initiating recurrent affective episodes is still fragmentary. Previous research has highlighted the role of significant life events and social rhythm in recurrent episodes of mania and depression. However, most studies share the drawback of retrospective self-report data, which are prone to recall biases and limited introspective abilities. Therefore, more objective data, such as neuropsychological and neurobiological measures are needed to further unravel the pathogenic mechanisms of the dynamics of bipolar disorder…
An interactive surrogate-based method for computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation
2019
Many disciplines involve computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation problems. Surrogate-based methods are commonly used in the literature to alleviate the computational cost. In this paper, we develop an interactive surrogate-based method called SURROGATE-ASF to solve computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation problems. This method employs preference information of a decision-maker. Numerical results demonstrate that SURROGATE-ASF efficiently provides preferred solutions for a decision-maker. It can handle different types of problems involving for example multimodal objective functions and nonconvex and/or disconnected Pareto frontiers. peerReviewed
Initial Coin Offering (ICO) as a Fundraising Strategy : A Multiple Case Study on Success Factors
2019
Cryptocurrencies and Initial Coin Offerings (ICO) are some of the more prominent examples of currently used blockchain technology applications. Especially software startups have leveraged ICOs to gain funding early on in their lifecycles, going on to develop and create new blockchain based applications. Recently, larger companies such as Facebook have also begun to show interest in cryptocurrency, although thus far not for funding purposes in the form of ICOs. In this paper, we investigate factors that positively affect the abilities of companies to meet their fundraising goals via ICOs. We first identify a set of factors from extant literature and then seek to further confirm the effect of…
Monoclonal Gammopathies and the Bone Marrow Microenvironment: From Bench to Bedside and Then Back Again
2023
Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable hematologic malignancy characterized by a multistep evolutionary pathway, with an initial phase called monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), potentially evolving into the symptomatic disease, often preceded by an intermediate phase called “smoldering” MM (sMM). From a biological point of view, genomic alterations (translocations/deletions/mutations) are already present at the MGUS phase, thus rendering their role in disease evolution questionable. On the other hand, we currently know that changes in the bone marrow microenvironment (TME) could play a key role in MM evolution through a progressive shift towards a pro-inflammatory and…
The Big Meaning of Small Messages
2019
Here, instant messaging as a mode of everyday communication in digital families is taken up for examination. We look, in particular, into the qualities that make WhatsApp an attractive communication tool for extended families: it allows both one-to-one and one-to-many interactions and provides multiple modalities for intergenerational family communication (voice, text, photos and videos). Empirical evidence and qualitative data collected in Finland and Italy in 2014–2015 are drawn upon and analysed in advancing the argument that the success story of WhatsApp in the family context is related to way it enables reaching the whole family at once and promotes ‘phatic communion’ via small message…
Use of a new aneurysm clip with an inverted-spring mechanism to facilitate visual control during clip application. Technical note.
1995
✓ When operating on deep-seated cerebral aneurysms, the surgeon's visual control of clip application may be impaired by the clip holder unless adjacent structures are retracted. To improve visual control and reduce the necessity for retraction, the senior author (A.P.) developed a new concept: an aneurysm clip with an inverted-spring mechanism. The clip has two jaws that point away from the clip blades. The jaws of the clip holder articulate with the inner side of the clip jaws. By distending the jaws of the clip holder the blades of the clip are opened and vice versa. Thus the visual field increases while the clip application is proceeding. This instrumentation is useful, especially in cas…
